taziNjOl AROUND. |W' I—' • • v / J The year: 1905. The date: Thursday. Jan. 19. The issue: Volume 14, Number 14. The name of the newspaper: Syracuse Register. Its editor and publisher: E. A. Prickett. The paper came to us through Edith Hooter, 419 Chicago street, Syracuse. She got it from Mrs. Bert (Hattie) Cripe, now a resident of St. Cloud, Ha., during a recent visit. Mrs. Cripe thought it might be of some interest here. We can assure her it is. The eight page paper, (four pages were pre-print) had an abundance of local news items, many ads. some on page 1. and is a yellowed, tattered and torn issue, yet of interest. The old paper advertises: “Try n ’Wawasee’ 5c cigar” in a page 1 classified, and also on page 1 “two cottage houses at $5.50 and two large houses at $7 and $8 per month. A. L. Cornelius. In 1905 F. W. Greene had tlx* drug store and Schlotterback Studio, “over the fair store." advertises: “Don’t miss this opportunity. Photographs free, investigate.” Other page 1 display ads included E. E. Strieby. The Fair Store, LeGrand Hotel and Restaurant. 11. & E. Sloan, props., and John T. Tiddle, hard and soft coal. feed, baled hay and straw. On the back page the Syracuse Lumber Co. advertises stoves and ranges and anything in the lumber line. The Milford Robe and Tanning Co. advertised robes, coats and mittens, with custom tanning a specialty. Seider and Burgener was an advertiser as was N. P. Hoffman who tested eyes free. At the K & P Opera House the Reno Novelty Co. was appearing, including sleight of hand, juggling, music, Japanese pastimes, exhibits of magic and a troupe of trained dogs. Prices: 15c, 25c and sc. A. Kaata. “Goshen's Greatest Clothier." offered rail fare paid to purchasers of $25. In an obituary the death of Gen. Reuben Williams, editor at the Northern Indhmaian and Warsaw Daily Times, was listed. He was found almost frozen in the snow at Winona Park where he wandered after leaving the Big Four train from Indianapolis after attending the inauguration of Governor Hanly. It said he was thought to have become delirious and was found about two miles from his home where he fell in the snow near the lake. A dog discovered him. Gen. Williams, the obit records, was oa the commission of 12 men who tried the Indiana conspirators, or Knights of the Golden Circle, in Indianapolis during the war. He was a Libby Prison prisoner for 18 months during the Civil War. The old paper announces the dedication of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran church on Sunday. Nov. 15, and shows a picture of the structure. It is still located on East Main street Rev. Theo. F. Weiskotten was the church’s pastor. The dedication sermon was preached by Rev. Dr. W. L. Hunton of Chicago. Attention is being called to the Saturday night free ski show in front of the Yellow Banks Hotel on beautiful Lake Webster by the North Webster Ski-Bees. Tie group used io perform in front of the South Shore Hotel before it burned. Participating each Saturday night is Indiana women’s open champion, Carolyn Smith of Lake
