THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13. 1883.

This summer when my com was two feet high the lightning struck it, killing a patch about 100 square feet in extent. It seemed to have killed the ground, as neither weeds nor spear of gra9s has grown on it since. The ground looks dead and I believe it is. Occasionally these spots are met with all over the prairies, lha people account for them as Buffalo tramps, where buffaloes congregated in fly time and tramped until they killed the soil, but from the above occurrence I account for them as having been struck by lightning.—[Indiana Farmer.

At ten o'elook this uiorni-.H-J spearNelBon, who was arrested oa rbe .'.'ittoi-. of November last, at Cape Glr.i: .i-»u,» Mo., for the murder of his mother, Mrs.'. Susan Nelson, of Anderson, Ind., wfaoe* body Wae found in a deep ravine across the river in Sugar Creek township, and who has been iu jail here ever sinse^. was discharged from custody, the grands jury having failed to indiot him. A UAZKTTX writer met Jasper as he was coming out of the jail in accompany with bis attorney, Albert J. Kelley, whocarried the news down to Uiui. Jasper was dressed neatly, iidti his shoes blackened until he co:ild almost aoe himself in them, and wore a neat looking tie. He had tfeen reoently shaved nnd looked twenty per cent, better t'aaa he did when he was brought here a prisoner from Cape Girardeau. Mr. Kelley wuid when he told Jasper he was discharged he thook him by tbe hand warmly. 'What do you intend' doing uow?" asked tbe reporter of Jasper, they walked up from tbe jail to Mr. Kelley's office. "1 shall go back to Anderson." V: "When?" "Probably to-day." "Going with your brother, Carl 1"' |a "No he went to Anderson lAst uiifht he had some business that called him. back." "You were expecting this were yon not f" "I knew they can Id not prove anything against me. I said that when I was first brought here."

The reporter could not help noticing the great improvement there was in Jasper's appearance from that he presented on November 13th last. Then he waa illy-dressed, his eyes blood-shot and wild, his frame trembling from drink and eontinued debauchc.

"What do*you think of ManisP' '•I don't know anything about the man. 1 don't know him and don't think I ever saw him in my life. I know nothing more about the oase against him than probably you know yourself." "Where is your wife?" t" il '•She is stopping at her father's, eight miles north of Anderson."

By this time the party had reached Kelley's office. Jasper was not known and attracted b: very little attention He stayed there but a very short wnite, when his attorney and himself crossed, over to the court bouse. On the wajt Kelley introduced Jasper to several persons and when It became noised around from one to another that the man with Kelley was Jasper Nelson there was great curiosity to see him, and many craning of necks. In the oirouit court room, upon instructions troro the Prosecutor, Jasper was sworn by tbe clerk to appear, as the court might direct, us a witness against Manis.

Carter Manis, father of Perry MMCMR, and wite, arrived in the city y« visited their son at the jail, stopper) »st night at the St. Charles House

morning had aa interview witu Mr. Mack, attorney for the prisoner. Tlje old man said he did not know whether bis son was guilty or not, but if h» was he wanted tbe punishment of the taw meeted out to him. Both are plain H?n.ple. They live in Madison county, near

Anderson. .IASPKR LKAVKS FOR ANDKRSOIT Jasper and A.J. Kelley left for Anderson this afternoon. When Kelley waa in Anderson the last time it was wben everybody thought Jasper guilty, and Kelley, in his well-meant efforts to .'«arhis client, received considerable abuse from tbe Anderson papers for big trouble. He goes back with Jasper free as a sort of vindication. It is hinted that Jasper and Kelley may turn up yr rne important evidence while they are gone

The grand jury adjourned at noon today until Monday. It was thought they would present a bill against Manis today, but it appears other witnesses nre expected. Said one ofthe giamJ jurors this afternoon: "I am convinced beyond nil :o ibr that Jasper is innocent.' 1 toink bo 1 rl not know anythiue of the matter it itli.. Had he not have made people believe bewas guilty by his actions right after his arrest be would net have been held this long. There was not a sciBtilia of evidence against him."
