OUR CITY was "gay1 Saturday afternoon, wearing its old-time, happy appearance. The country people, having sold their products of tli* bountiful season, were in lowu to'do their trading, tbe big Saturday evening market brought out tbe people, looking after the supplies for Sunday's table, and the cloudi which obscured tho sun, causing the day, although warm, to beotio of tho most pleasant of the week, bad the effect of bringing everybody olse out, in all tbe gorgeousness "of "store clothes," and such crowds as thronged Main and Fourth streets are seldom seen. Ladies, resplendent in nil tbe hues of the rainbow, and brilliant in iho latest fashions young gentlemen in the tightest unmentionables, bobosi-tniied tottisnnd bluutqsl-loed«boot8 countrymen in their homespun w«alth in silks and satins, and poverty in rags and p-M'hes—all surged along the p»vemenil Irfwenting au over-changing human panorama, with all tho shapes, colors and eccentricities of the kaleidoscope.

HOT MILK FOB DIABBHCEA.—A short time since we published the fact that hot milk-ba* been successfully tried in Bengal as a remedy for diarrhoea, and since then we lear that it has been used in this city with beneficial results. It is stated that a pint every four hours will check the most violent diarrhoea, stomach ache, incipient cholera, or dysentery. It is perfectly toothing to the whole alimentary canal. THE COMET.—A few days since, we published an article which was going the rounds of the papers, giving an account of the comet, said to be visible in the northwest, and which was likely to come uncomfortably near this planet of ours. It was even suggested that, as no tail was yet visible, it was probable the comet was heading directly toward us, with its tail where it should be, behind it and out of sight and that it would take some sharp work to dodge it. Now eomes the Chicago <Tribune> and spoils the whole story: 1. No such prediction has ever been made by any scientific man, so far as known. The story was originated in

quarter which no astronomer regards as

trustworthy. 2. No such comet appeared during the month of August. 3. There is no comet visible as described. The only wanderer now seen in that quarter is the planet Jupiter, who, although he has been held responsible for the performance of many strange freaks among the comets, is far from being "hair-like" himself.

And, finally, though we do not mean to say that a comet, hitherto unknown, may not now be approaching the earth, certainly none that has hitherto appeared, and whose return is a matter of accurate calculation, is nearing us. But we do not know of any report from any scientiflc quarter that any such celestial body is visible anywhere. Therefore, if any credulous persons have been made unhappy by these portents dire of plagues, and desolating wars, and crash of worlds, they may dismiss their fears and be legitimately and safely miserable about the weather.

N*W HAUWABI FIBM.—A few days tinoe we mentioned the change in tho hardward firdi ot Cory & Mancourt, the interest of the latter having been purchased by Mr. Anthony Defrees. In this morning's paper is an advertisement from thie new firm, to which we ca«l attention, and in doing so commend both gentlemen as honorable, upright, courteous dealers, wbo buy closely, sell at a •mall margin, and start out with a determination to give satisfaction. When in want of any article in their fine, we advise our readers to visit the spacious and well filled establishment of Cory &. Defre6i. *.»

OUR COUNTY FAIR IS near at hand, and the officers of the Agricultural Society are actively at work to make it a success.— We do not mean to disparage Vigo county in the eyes of outsiders when we say there is less interest taken in Agricultural Fairs here than almost any other county in the State, but to wake up our people to the importance of making an interesting show at the coming Fair. There is scarcely a county in the State with as much good land as Vigo and the season haes been unusually propitious for the farmer and gardner. Every one cannot have the best, but let overyone bring to the fair the best he has, and compare it with his neighbors, while we all enjoy a good social time in our beautiful fair grounds, the handsomest in the State. —————

SHOOTING AFFAIR.—Yesterday evening Officers Yost and Wheatfill caught two young men in company with two courtezans in the east part of the city. The officers attempted to arrest the parties, when the men broke and run. Officer Yost flred three shots at the retreating party, and one of the shots took effect in the hand of one of the young men, inflicting a slight wound. The offenders were then arrested, and we suppose the case will come up in the police court today.—<Journal of yesterday>.

Journal of

THE DIRECTORS of the Yigo Iron Company met yesterday at the residence of Mr. Chauncey Rose, and elected as officers of the Company, Alex. L. Crawford, President John M. Crawford,Secretary and Superintendent and D. W. Minshall, Treasurer. It was determined to locate the works, comprising a rolling mill and blast furnace, in tbe southeast part of. the city, in the vicinity of tbe Nail Works. "I- A

yxteTdxy.u.,.\{\i%i

Your supposition was erroneous. The men were brought to town, but no charge was made against them, nor has there been any inquiry in regard to the shooting. We learn officer Yost states that he fired his pistol twice in the air, and on catching the man fell upon him, when the pistol was accidentally discharged, the ball passing through one of the man's finger [sic]. Be this as it may, we most respectfully but earnestly ask if the privilege is to be continued of allowing our policemen to carry loaded and concealcd firearms while in the ordinary discharge of their duties in the day time. The carrying of concealed weapons is in violation of a State law, and it is high time that policemen, who are sworn to enforce the laws are instructed to obey the same. —————

HEAVY BUSINESS.—In order to form an idea of shipments East, we have'only to glance at the following figures, showing the amount of certain kinds of freights shipped over the T. H. & I. R, the present week up to Friday evening—five days.

Watermelons—30 cars average per car 1,500: total 45,000 total lbs 810,000. Bulk Grain—106 cars average woight per car 20,090 total lbs 2,120,000.

Flour—41 cars bbls per c^r 100 total bbls 4,100 total lbs 82,000. Pork—25 cars bbls per car 55 total, bbls 1,375 total lbs 453,750.

Walnut Lumber—14 cars average feet per car 4,000 total feet 56,000 total Ibg 252,000.

Total amount of freight shipped—4,455, 760 pounds. This does not include a^SP£iy''lirgVpart of freight daily, such as ore, coal, iron) stocfc, dressed lumbor and merchandise generally, incident to a through business, but merely the amount shipped from the Terre'Haute depot. Tho great rush of bulk grain and flour for the eastern markets has taxed the entire rolling stock of the'road, which Is ordinarily marethan sufficient.

This unusual local business, together with the through business has made it next to an impossibility to supply cars enough, and the T. H. & I. li. R- freight house at 6ix o'clock last evening was completely jammed with Eastern bound freights. The employes havo several times recently, worked until twelve o'clock at night in order to mako room for tho following day's business

now getting into a shape that a laboring man may not expend a week's wages to buy food to provision his family from Saturday until Monday. The supply cf food is so abundant that not only tbe producer is amply rewarded at the reduced prices obtained, but lbs impoverished consumer it enabled to have plenty and to spare in his larder. The only article of prime necessity that keepsup to the old War and famine prices is meat—either flesh or cured. Why such 1J the case is one of the unfathomable mysteries.

Tbe black walnut lumber goes to one firm at Boston, Massachusetts.

EYES.—To obtain good spectacles has always boon a difficult job. Our readers will be pleased to learn that that difficulty need DO longor bo encountered, if they will call at the jawelry store of S.
