In quantity when added to what he or ahe now owns 'equal to 160 acre*—provided he or *he *hall cultivate the whole or part thereof. Dr. Gardiner—Who were his Accomplices!

Of all the recent ewnta, the death of Dr. Geo. A. Gardiner, at Washington,, has awakened the most general aod deepest internet* A lelou, steeped in orime, dying by his own hand, and with a fstkehood on hia Hps, his death haa yet produced a ahock throughout the country.

There is hardly room for a doubt that ho deserved the severe puuishmeut that had been adjugded to him. Bui that a man of his talenls, education# prepossessing manners £nd social position should have plunged into such a depth of crime, and should have been consigned by the law to a doom so horrible, that he prcfered elen death itself, this very fact is calculated to excite pity and compassion. It Is a sabject painful to contemplate, and the mind would fain turn from it but by eomn mysterious principle of our nature and organiza

tion,

our very thoughts involuntarily recur, again and again, Io l!* terrible close of this brief career of guilt and crime, to the pri*oner in the guard room, to hi* narrow deuifi-bed—that death-beJ of unutterable agony—they oven linger with this wretched being, so suddenly changed, by poison, from the condition of life and health, to a discolored corpse, and follow him lo his dishonored grave.

Nor will the public interest, now fully arouked, rest satiafied here. Inquiries begin to be made for those who *hared with Dr. Gardiner hi* great plunder who partook of tho fruit, if not cogolznnt of the *in.

The large award to Dr. Gardiner—more than four hundred thousand dollars—was made hy a commission consisting of the Hon. George Evans, of Maine, the Hon. Robert T. Paine, of North Carolina, and the Hon. Caleb B. Smith, of Indiana-

It is deserving of remark that the tesiiniony of Mr. Evens himself, the President of the Board, given on the occasion of Gsrdlner's previous trial, showed that the award was made uuder circumstances, and on evidence which, In the mind* of most people, would by no meau« justify It. In connection with thU, It will be remembered that Major Latly, a son-in-law of Mr. Evaus, waa a participator In a heavy amount, wilh Dr. Gardiner, in the proceeds.

Neither will It be forgotten that It was one of the leading counsel of Dr. Gardiner, the Hon. Thoma* Corwln, of Ohio, who *ub*«quetttly made the order, as Secretary of ihe Treasury, on which the money was paid. He sold out his interest just previous to entering the Treasury Department, and, we believe, for the express purpose of enabling himself to act In his oflklal capacity lu the premises.

For a longtime it was aswrtod by Mr. Corwln friends, that the whole sum which he received remalncd on deposit* witli hi# banker#, Me*«r*. Corcoran & Riprf*, *nd thai It w* dMermlniKi, if Dr. Gardiner should be convicted, to pay it immedia

The sparkling wine which has been drunk—the epicurism dinners which have been eaten—the jovial and noisy hours which have been enjoyed at Washington on the strength of this award—end finally the life of him who figured most conspicaoasly la the dark end fraudulent transaction, have all passed away forever 1 It may be tbat the only guilty oae has already been exposed bat we apprehend tbat It will be found somewhat difficult to convince people that grey-beaded lawyers, used to tbe expeeiUon of viilaiaies, and to weighing evidence, couldthoroughly investigate this caae, enough so to become Its successful advocate* without discovering indication* of something wrong.—N.
