The Americans are a gloomy people and their very amusements partake of tne character of seasons of penance and mortification of the mind and body. Look at our dreary comic papers, regard our sociables and fashionable diuner parties, glance at our negro minstrels— the same melancholy pervades them all. The county fair, however, discounts all other penances and a course of them should be held by the laukest Calvinidt to assail the guiltiest wretch who ever robbed a church or edited the Chicago Tribune, aud fit him out for a gilt-edged heaven on demand. The ingenuity of man in the arts of cruelty is well-known —men have invented the rack, the thumb-screws, and the stovepipe hat, but it remained for an Iowa agricultural society, to add a new terror to the deadly fair. They have engaged Weston to walk forwards, backwards, in several languages, on his ear, &c. Mr. Weston —or shall we say "Hon." since he has as much right to the title as his partner in iniquity, Hon. Deacon Bross?—will appear in uniform, shoulder his switch, and show how bets were lost, and explain to a gaping populace wherein his "ambulatory progression" differs from meaner mortals. This is bad enough. Weston piled on prize pumpkins, prize trotters, prize pigs, prize orators, steam mangles, and patent potato-bug mashers, is bad enough but one would not suffice for these insatiate archers. Mr. Greeley is to deliver an address. There is no evidence that this arrangement was the result of an access of delirium superinduced by de bauch, or by the perusal of "Peregrine Pickle's" Sabbath articles. It was done deliberately, in cold blood, by men who can neither plead ignorance nor adequate provocation in excuse of their enormous crime. The consequence is obvious. The bucolic Hawkeyes will go and do likewise. Thousands of farmers, the bone and sinew of the laud, if we may be allowed the expression, will dress themselves up in tights aud velvet jackets, and, armed with gold mounted wnips, will pass their time in walking four hundred miles in five consecutive days, without rest or sleep. Those who escape the Westonian ocylly will fall into the Greeleyan Charybdis. They will clamor for protection on pig iron and salt, and will take printing presses and go west, and call all men liars aud idiots, and will devour tons of cattlefeed and bushels of brau. Either alternative is alarming. Then there is a possibility that Mr. Greeley may be mistaken for Weston, and viceversa. Whatsteadygoing farmer will vote for a President who goes about the country like a mountebank, a regular "leg?" Who that sees the white locks of the great and good goose-shepherd of Chappaqua will think that that old cuss can walk? Or even if Mr. Greeley speaks in his own person, what incalculable injury may he not inflict on Iowa agriculture. People will be-, gin to take guano in their mashed potatoes, to bury their geese in the garden so as to evoke gooseberries, to plant earlyflowering, short-horn, Cochin China sheep, because they are best for seed, and in divers other manners to mold themselves on the model of their great exemplar to their unutterable shame and financial ruin. There will be no crops, the stores will be closed, the railroads will rust for want of traffic, Dubuque aud Cedar Falls and Clinton will be places of desolation and the abodes of dragons, aud the noarmoC and owl will wrangle in the deserted Fair Grounds. The prospect is alarming. Long as the lamp holds out to burn the vilest director may return. We beseech the Committee of Arrangements to recede while yet they may with honor and safety. Let Mr. Weston—we do not urge his slaughter openlu, although no intelligent jury could find his assassia guilty of anything but justifiable homicide—let Mr. Weston be put on a threshing machine, where nis pedestrian powers may be utilized, and be thus exhibited to the publio. Let Mr. Greeley's massive mind explore that vast untrodden field of speculation which opens itself ou the pig iron and salt questions. Let us have an occassional "Comment" by the
Tribune. Can we not hear some of his "Recollections of a Busy Life?" Is there no Muck in Gilead, no Irrigation there? Mr. Greeley boasts of his philanthropy and patriotism. Let him give practical proof that he possesses them, and for tne sake of the old tottering grandsire, the frisky matron, and the babe unboru, forbear to devastate those smiling plains of Iowa, where, as yet, the hand of the destroyer has not been.

The potato-bug has retired fiom business, and the agricultural fair devastates the country. Oil the walls of tavern sheds its gaudy posters strive with tiie bills of the next circus and the last stallion. Prize lists flood the groaning mails announcing that $5,000 will be given to the fastest trotter. Honest farmers are at work putting the finishing touches to the corporeal toilet of Berkshire pigs, and picking out large kernels of wheat to make up specimen bushels. Their wives and daughters are constructing butter, and urging hens to the production of eggs 2| inches in diameter, as shall circumstantially appear in the country paper, and making pickles and bread, and hoping fervently that their neighbors' cream may sour or their dough refuse to rise. The lawyer is preparing an oration of seven-Bross power, wherein he will explain what he knows about farm iug, and cast the halo of romance over prize bulls and patent churns. Worse yet, the inventors of centrifugal, compensating harrows, and back-action knitting machines are ready to swoop down upon an unsuspecting rural population and render their lives miserable with all sorts of intricate machines for losing time aud labor. The "hotels" gap for their prey, and lay in acres of flabby pie aud ill-omened beef steak. Editors fortify themselves with an extra supply of large-sized adjectives for the chronicling of our talented fellow-citizen's short-horn chickens, or our enterprising friend and neighbor's gigantic beet. The —but our palsied pen refuses to record further horror.

The Wiles of the Strange Woman. There was almost a tragedy in a hotel at Richmond, Va., the other day. The wife of a boarder had discovered in her husband's pocket a letter from another woman, which intimated that their relations were not of the character to be borne with by a wife. While she was talking over the matter With the lartM-' lady, it was announced that there was a lady in the parlor who desired to see her husband. She went down, aud there found her who had written the note. They soon discovered their relative positions, and a terrible encounter took place. The husband interfered, but only made matters worse, as each thought herself the most deeply wronged. A crowd was collected from the street in the house by the noise, and the ex citement reached its climax when both ladies drew pistols,.and seemed bent on shooting one a*io|her tlieafs^lves, and the husband, who had taken a seat, quietly giving up all as lost. The interference of outsiders alone prevented bloodshed.

MEDICAL.
A Cataplasm of Rhubarb.
LAID
upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some shape, are Indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are in^ curable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administra tion has been to get one which has either laxa tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. Thi has at last been done.

EDWARD WILDKK'S FAM
fulfill all the requirements of the
case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. I11 small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter, but in whatever quantity given, they create no necesslty for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.
Helmintliology.
A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodie should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the Influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states oi the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them trom the human sytem.

Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before bim, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages' still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder-a Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use 01 this truly great medicine he is fully master 01 the situation. He has no fear in the presence of croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand.
Indigestions
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood,' is, we all know, the most, common of all disorders of the stomach. It is also the mo obstinate- It has been the most written about No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who Is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursue? ^unceasingly, an*never can rest satisfied until Tie has overtaken. Edward Wilder'* Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They are a specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality of the disorder by a corresponding speciality of cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health
Gaudianna River* The British army wlien it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana thin by the bultets of the enemy. They died by thousands 411 Europe believed that the invading army wasAKttrpated. Yet malaria diseases are no .more eommon in Europe than in ouv own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of 0»r i»»d—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we TOftde to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three g]pe?t actors in thia equation of disease are sola* heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent fbr evil than any other kpoyra agents so long as they exist, Just so lopg will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long ftlll XV b# necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all knova agents for this purpose, noile Is to compare witb Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease apd of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure ia guaranteed ID every case. VV
St. Louis Hospital,-Paris. This ancient institution is one ol the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. in some form. They were esteemed
by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They
mniT vnrvlcrrQ were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash, rose-
ash/pimples, scrofula, ulcere, old sores, falling of
the hair, etc. In all they did good,in most they effected a cure. Bnt It has remained for Edward Wilder's SarictpariOa and Potash to perform the most remarkably cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the diseases at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails.
