TELEVISION IN REVIEW

By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD UPI—Notes to watch television by: Coming attractions: ABCTV’s two-hour adaptation of “The Desperate Hours,” about escaped convicts who invade a family’s home, airs Dec. 13 . . . the stars: George Segal, Teresa Wright, Arthur Wright, Yvette Mimieux . . . same network offers another showing of last year’s memorable childhood reminiscence by Truman Capote, “A Christmas Memory,” Dec. 19, with Geraldine Page. Nicolai Gogol’s "Diary of a Madman,” concerning the progressive disintegration of a lowly government clerk’s mind— and performed as a monodrama by French actor Roger Coggio —is set for an hour on CBS-TV Dec. 20 . . . “Mr. Dickens of London,” in which Sir Michael Redgrave and Juliet Mills help re-create the life and work of Charles Dickens, will be broadcast by ABC-TV Dec. 12, also for an hour . . . “Can You Hear Me?”, a half-hour documentary about a deaf child and her chances for a normal life, is an ABC-TV presentation Nov. 27. Quoth the ratings, evermore: The latest national television rankings report that NBC-TV’s Oct. 24 prime time double feature, “A Hard Day’s Night” with the Beatles and “Cinderfella” with Jerry Lewis, did pretty well-placing 19th and 20th among all shows. The ratings also reveal that ABC-TV’s embarrassing musical tour of Sophia Loren's home and environs got a poor ranking as well . . . that CBS-TV’s Don Knotts variety hour, as expect-

ed, fared strongly . . . and that ABC-TV’s musical show with John Davidson at Notre Dame, and its documentary about Alama Football Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant, finished almost at the bottom in audience interest. The top 10 entries: Andy Griffith . . . Lucille Ball . . . the rerun of a "Peanuts” cartoon about Halloween . . . Red Skelton . . . Dean Martin . . . the move “Hud,” with Paul Newman, Patricia Neal, Melvyn Douglas and Brandon de Wilde . . . “Gunsmoke” . . . the movie “The King and I,” with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr . . “Family Affair” ... and “Corner Pyle.” Talk, talk, talk: a University of Pennsylvania psychiatrist discusses marital infidelity on NBC-TV’s “Today” show Tuesday—and even fidelity too . . . other “Today” guests next week —^Wednesday: poet Marianne Moore is interviewed on her 80th birthday by Joe Garagiola— . . Thursday Nov. 16: educator Dr. Mortimer Adler talks about the 200th anniversary of the first volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica . . . Friday, Nov 17: Edward Albee converses about his new play, “Everything in the Garden,” starring Barbara Bel Geddes and Barry Nelson. Dr. Benjamin Spock, the famed pediatrician-pacifist, is the guest of ABC-TV’s "Good Company” series next Thursday . . . the network says Spock “will talk about his reasons for opposing the draft, Vietnam and President Johnson, for whom he once campaigned.”
