Once Over Lightly

By Don Whitehead

Putnam County fans didn’t have any doubts on how good the Bainbridge Pointers really - are, but the rest of the State was in doubt. Before the Lafayette semistate was past history, Logansport was the heavy favorite to whip the Pointers, as the Berries are members of the tough North Central Conference which had four teams in the final 16, and Bainbridge ' supposedly didn’t play any r worthwhile competition. But at 9:30 p. m. Saturday, the rest of the State knew the “people’s choice” could play basketball with the best of

them.

With over 9,000 fans watching, Bainbridge ripped into the Berries and when the smoke cleared, the Berries were jelly _ and the Pointers were facing the No. 2 team in the State in

the final game.

But for three quarters the Pointers were lackadasical. In the first quarter they attempted 21 shots and only four found the nets. Larry Steele missed his last seven in a row; Ron Rossok missed four; Hanks two; Norman Steele and Gary

Martin one each.

The second quarter was a little better for the Pointers. They controlled the boards, grabbing 14 rebounds to Jeff’s four, but 10-24 shooting didn’t offset Jeff’s 8-15 and three free throws. Larry Steele hit 3-7 from the field. Rossok was 2-6: Hanks 3-5; N. Steele 0-2; and

Martin 2-4.

But Jeff wasn’t waiting around. Erik Jacobson was the big gun, connecting on 8-16 the first half. Most were 15-20 foot jumpers from the left wing of •. the Pointer zone. Coach Pat Rady tried all the knowledge in his book to perk the sluggish Pointers. Marvin Price, who sparked the Pointers in the Logansport win, came off the bench to give them some . life, but still his efforts couldn’t contain the hot shooting

Bronchos.

The third quarter was a nightmare. Rady pulled his entire first five for a minute to ; talk to them at the 5:20 mark • of the third quarter. This didn’t ! help at the time as Jeff took advantage of the listless Pointers to bang in nine of 18 field ' goal tries, and Jacobson hit five of ten, and Ernest Haupt, reserve center, connected on three of four.

On the other hand, the gallant Pointers managed on four of 14 with Larry Steele going 0-4; R. Rossok made 1-2; Norman Steele 1-3; Price 2-3; Martin and Richard 0-1. With Jeff in front 59-41 at the end of the third stanza, Logansport and Gary Roosevelt fans started for home. For good reason at the time, as it looked like the game was turning into a rout

But then, three minutes in the last quarter, the superhuman effort of the Pointers began. What started it, no one knows, but picking up momentum, Bainbridge, cheered on by the thousands of fans, forced the usually glue-fingered Bronchos into mistake after mistake. And Larry Steele found his shooting-eye. Only the clock prevented the Pointers from pulling another Milan and the upset of the year.

The last six minutes and 14 seconds will go down in basketball history as the most thrilling in Indiana. Trailing 66-48, the Pointers, behind the magnificent Steele and Rossok, plus the other Pointer mighty mites, completely demoralized the proud and mighty Bronchos, forcing them into 12 turnovers. But with 1:27 left the real heroics began. In that span, the Pointers reeled off ten straight points to come from 73-62 down to 73-72. Larry Steele had six points, Rossok two foul shots, and Marvin Price a bucket on a steal.

The last bucket came with 10 seconds left when L. Steele stole the ball and went in on a solo. On the next play, Norman Steele fouled John Van Kurin and he made the one and one with only two seconds remaining to ice the game. Bainbridge called time out and L. Steele got off a 30-footer at the buzzer.

Marion Crawley, coach of Jeff, became quite upset during the last quarter when he thought Steve Reash should have had a bonus free throw after making the first. Maybe Steve should have had the bonus, but Pointer fans thought that goal-tending should have been called on a couple of occasions when Jeff players were trapping shots in their downward flight on the backboards and it wasn’t by accident that their hands were in the nets either when the ball was on the rim. The officials might have been asleep on the bonus shot, but they were looking the other way on the goal-tending.

Argentine ace Juan Manuel Fangio is the only man ever to win the Grand Prix auto racing world championship five times. He posted his first world title in 1951 and then took the crown in 1954-55-56-57.

Hoosiers Head For NCAA Play

- . •> Purdue, Notre Dime Stars First Round Draft Choices

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. UPI— Indiana University students tonight and Thursday plan to give the Hoosiers a massive send-off to the NCAA basketball tourney at Evanston, 111. The Indiana team travels to the tournament after it clinched a first-place tie in the Big Ten with Michigan State. Indiana goes to the tourney because Michigan State has been there since the Hoosiers. The students scheduled a pep rally tonight and an editorial in the campus newspaper “The Daily Student” urged “all students to come to the pep rally and cheer until they’re hoarse and then cheer some more when they see the Hoosiers off Thursday morning.” Thursday, the students are expected to form a motorcade to escort the Big Ten co-cham-pions to Bloomington Airport, where they will board the plane i to Evanston.

NEW YORK UPI — Three Notre Dame and two Purdue football stars, including All American Boilermaker quarterback Bob Griese, were first round choices Tuesday in the combined National and American Football Leagues playerdraft. Griese, who guided Purdue to a Rose Bowl victory last season, was the fourth player chosen in the draft. He was picked by the Miami Dolphins. John Charles, a defensive back who was sidelined part of the season with an injury, was the other Purdue player picked in the first round. He was selected by the Boston Patriots.

nesota took MSU halfback Clint Jones, and the San Francisco Forty-Niners grabbed All ' America signal caller Steve : Spurrier of Florida. Notre Dame fullback Larry Conjar was a second round draft of the Cleveland Browns. Kansas City took Irish linebacker Jim Lynch on the second round. George G o e cl d e k e, Notre Dame center, was picked by Denver on the third round.

Paul Seiler, an offensive guard for Notre Dame, was the first choice of the New York Jets.
