Purdue Athlete Killed in Trampoline Demonstration
LAFAYETTE UPI — A Purdue University athlete considered likely to be a member of the Boilermaker basketball varsity next winter was killed Thursday while demonstrating on a trampoline for a gymnastics class. Gary Lee Bancroft. 19, Linden, Mich., suffered a fracture
Schlee Leads Festival Open INDIANAPOLIS UPI— Johnny Schlee, a happy-go-lucky youngster from the badlands of Arizona with an ancient putter, took a two-shot lead into the second round of the 992,000 “500” Festival Open today. Schlee whipped threatening weather and the field with a sizzling 6-under-par 66 Thursday, a record for the revamped Speedway course which in the past was an easy touch for the touring pros. But only 25 of the nearly 140 play-for-pay swingers bested par 72, with Dale Douglass and Johnny Pott tying for second spot with 68s, followed by five others at 69, including defending champion Bruce Crampton of Australia and Billy Casper, the U.S. Open champ who is the top favorite for the 916,200 top prize. Schlee, 27, of Sun City, Aria., was runnerup in the Minnesota classic two weeks ago in this, his first year on the golf tour. He ranks well down the list in 49th place in PGA money earnings, but he turned tiger Thursday and shredded the course with nine birdies, including dusters of three in a row on the front nine and again on the back oifie.
of the neck when he landed on his head while negotiating a forward somersault in a Purdue gymnasium. Bancroft, a member of Purdue’s freshman team last season and a former high school star at Lake Fenton, Mich., lived half an hour after the accident He died in Purdue Health Center shortly after he was taken there by two physical education professors who tried to revive him with artificial respiration at the scene. University spokesmen said Bancroft was considered an expert on the trampoline and was asked to demonstrate for a class. He was attending summer school and would have been a sophomore next fall. When he landed on the surface of the trampoline, his neck snapped and he lay still. Prof. Anthony Annarino climbed on the tramp and administered artificial respiration which, he said, restored breathing. Prof. Ed Eicholtz also assisted in administering first aid to Bancroft. University spokesmen said head basketball coach George King had counted on Bancroft as one of seven freshmen for the varsity team in the 1966-67

THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES are making like pennant contenders this year and while they’re doing it the whole outfield is in a battle by itself for the National League batting title. If you think that’s an unusual situation, you’re right, and, adding to the luster of the lure in Pittsburgh is the fact that a fourth Pirate outfielder also is among the leaders but doesn’t get to play every day. Roberto Clemente, the smooth-swinging Puerto Rican, one* again has taken the lead and this comes natural for him for he’s already won three N.L. batting titles, including two in a row. Clemente plays right field. The left fielder, Willie Stargell, also is right up there, and the center fielder, Matty Alou, is among the first three, too. The utilityman, Manny Mota, who plays in center when he’s in the game, was among the first four just the other day. All four Pittsburgh outfielders were hitting over .300 and they held the top four positions in the league! • • a CLEMENTE generally can be figured on coming from behind to make a bid. He was hitting around .285 after the elub returned from a recent western trip, told manager Harry Walker he waa tired and would like a few days rest. He got them and then proceeded to hit .444 on the 11-game home stand. This is Clemente's 12th year with the club and only Bonus Wagner has won more batting crowns for the Pirates. Bonus won eight hit titles, including seven in succession. Paul Waner won three. In fact the Pirates have had 18 batting champions since 1900, a pretty fair mark for one club. • • • STILL another unusual part of the Pittsburgh batting title story is a chapter submitted by the manager and his brother. Manager Harry Walker won the hit title with the Phillies In 1947 and his brother Fred (Dixie) Walker won the title with Brooklyn in 1944, becoming the only brother combo to major league history with each member winning the batting title. The Pirates almost had one of their own, too, back in 1927. Paul Waner was the winner with a .380 mark and his brother Lloyd, a fellow outfielder, finished third with .354. That waa a pennant year for the Sues, too.
fishing Generally Good
INDIANAPOLIS UPI—Here is the weekly fishing report from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources: CENTRAL — Bass and channel catfish are biting on minnows and crawfish at Sugar Creek, Raccoon and Big Walnut creeks. Largemouth bass are rewarding anglers at Cataract and Raccoon Reservoirs. Bluegill fishermen are getting some nice ones from the stripper pits and farm ponds using catalpa worms. Water is low at Kokomo aad Prairie Reservoirs and in the Mimrissinewa River, but fish are hiting well with bluegills taking redworms and crappies biting on catalpa worms. Mississinewa River fishermen are getting catches of largemouth bass and smallmouth bass using surface lures, and catfish are biting on cheese baits and liver. SOUTHWEST — The weather is hot and dry in this district and the water is losv. Channel catfish are taking chicken liver in the east fork of the White River near Shoals and are bitinf oa. mussel meat at Hindostaa Falls. Perch and channel catfish are being caught in the lower fork of the Wabash River using live minnows. Strip pit fishing is just average. SOUTHEAST—Trotline fishing is at its peak at Laughery Creek and White River with
several large flathead catfish being caught. Small streams are low but furnishing real fine fishing for flyrodders as largemouth, smallmouth and rock bass are hitting well. Excellent bass and channel catfish are being taken from State Lakes, especially Brush Creek Reservoir.
Resigns
CHESTERTON, UPI—Mickey Sofiak, who was to have become head basketball coach and athletic director at Chesterton High School this fall, submitted his resignation Wednesday. The former Gary Froebel coach had been hired in February to replace Virgil Little. He said the resignation resulted from a misunderstanding regarding his duties here. The resignation said that he had been seeking an administrative position in charge of intramural physical education and recreation programs and that “coaching was not my primary reason for signing my contract.’* About 12 months ago, Sofiak resigned as head coach at Froebel in mid-season while his team was ranked first in the state.

Miss Mayhew — who two years ago won the tourney at the age of 15—reached the finals by defeating Mrs. Ralph Snyder, Seymour, 6 and 4, in a semi-final match Thursday. Mrs. Skala — the current Indianapolis city champion, made the finals by edging Mrs. Bill Wright, Fort Wayne, 1-up in 21 holes. While Miss Mayhew had things pretty much her own way, Mrs. Skala had her hands full Thursday. Mrs. Skala, with a 1-over-par 38, held a 1-up lead after nine holes. But Mrs. Wright birdied the 10th and 11th holes to take a 1-up lead and was 2-up after 13. But Mrs. Skala then carded a birdie and a par to even the match. Mrs. Wright won 16 and Mrs. Skala tied it up again with a par on 18. They halved the next two holes and Mrs. Skala dropped her 12-foot par putt on 21 to, win. Miss Mayhew was 1-over-par for 14 holes. She was out in 37 compared to Mrs. Snyder’s 42 and coasted to victory without losing a hole.

Indians Defeat Spokane, 6-5 INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Dick Kenworthy rammed a two-out, two-run triple down the right field line in the ninth inning Thursday night to give the Indianapolis Indians a 6-5 victory over Spokane. The victory, coupled with Tulsa’s 6-5 defeat at the hands of Spokane, gave the Indians a 3-game lead in the Eastern Division of the Pacific Coast League. Kenworthy had a field day with two San Diego pitchers, going 4-for-5, including a first inning home run and two singles besides the three-bagger. His game-winning blow came after Len Johnston singled and Marv Staehle beat out an infield hit. Ron Willis, the last of four Tribe pitchers, was the winner. He is now 10-6, while the loser was Bill Wilson, the last of two Padre pitchers. He is 4-3. Cal Emery hit a home run for the Padres, his second in twq games.
