Obituaries Funeral Rites Tuesday For Russell I. Pierce

Services for Russell L Pierce, 71, well known Greencaslls resident, will be held st 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rector Funeral Home with Dr. Claude McClure in charge. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Mr. Pierce passed away Saturday night in the Putnam County Hospital following an extended Illness. He was born Feb. 9, 1895, In Brick Chapel, the son of Robert L. and Lennie Hall Pierce. For 23 years he was Secre-tary-Treasurer of the Greencastle Production Credit Association before retiring. For many years Mr. Pierce was active in American Legion circles; the local Elks Lodge, and the Putnam County Saddle Club. He was a veteran of World War L He Is survived by his wife, Jane; two sisters, Mrs. Reese Jackson, Indianapolis, Mrs. Harry Wells, city: three nieces, Mrs. Mary Jane 9 Irvine May, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Helen Bart, Indianapolis, Mrs. Resell Boyd, city; a nephew, H. Lynn Irvine, Buena Park, Calif., and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Tassel Hartley Boyles, Arkansas City, Ark. Friends may call at the funeral home. Mrs. Oda York's Funeral Tuesday Mrs. Oda York, 71, who resided at 922 South Indiana Street, passed away Sunday afternoon in the Putnam County Hospital, where she was admitted on March 29. M’s. Yorit was born August 8, 1894, In hadependMiee County, Ackenaas, (fee daughter of PVank and Elisabeth Mayse Taylor. She attended High School in Lawrence and Valley Township schools in Arkansas. She was a member of the Baptist Church in BryantsviHe. Survivors are: the husband, Mile York; two daughters, Mrs. Nonna Dixon, Greencastle Mrs. Mhxine Steele, Brownsburg; three sons, Franklin, Greencastle; Edgar, Lafayette and Raymond, Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Fouts, Mishawaka and Mrs. Annie Grissom, Indianapolis; two brothers, Walter, of Mitchell and Alpha, of Bryantsville and nineteen grandchildren. Funeral services will bs held Tuesday at 2:00 p. m. at the Hopkins-Waiton Funeral Home. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral boms after 7 this eve-

Beatrice Deunis Died Sunday Mrs. Beatrice Dennis, 81, Fillmore, Route 1, died Sunday afternoon in the Putnam County Hospital where she had been a patient since March 26. Mrs. Dennis was born February 14, 1895 In Dixon, Ky., the daughter of John and Delilah Nunn Link. She was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church in Dixon, Ky. For the past five years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Morie Girton, Fillmore. Survivors are: three daughters, Mrs. Morie Girton, Fillmore; Mrs. Ruth Benton, Newberg and Mrs. Dorothy Brown, Mishawaka; three sons, Ansel, Morganfield, Ky.; Elmer of Clay, Ky, and Carroll, Detroit,

Mich.; two sisters, Beulah Catas of Dixon Ky, and Kats Mitchell, Sebree, Ky.; sisteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being made by Hopkins-Wanton Funeral Home here with the Tapps Funeral Home in Dixon, Ky. Viaaie Crimes Rites Pending Mrs. Vinnie Grimes, wife of Albert Grimes, Greencastle, R., 2, died Monday morning at the Putnam County Hospital. Revival Services At Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon thirtyfour students and spohsors from Hardin-Simmona University, a Southern Baptist University located in Abilene, Texas, arrived in the Indianapolis area to lead tan student-led revivals being held April 8-10. These revivals ere being held in Brazil, Roachdale, Brownsburg, Crawfordsville, Lebanon, Frankfort, Thomtown, Greencastle, Carrollton. and Terre Haute. Arrangements ware made by Gene take. Southern Baptist area missionary. Tha opening activity for the revivals was an area-wide banquet and yqutk rally Saturday night at the Parkway Baptist Chapel in Indianapolis. Two hundred were present for the presentation of tha drama, “The Oiallenge of die Croes.” Hardin-Simmons students leading the revival here in Greencastle are Donnie Hibbitts, a junior ministerial student from Throckmorton, Texas, Dick Mobley, a senior student from Colorado leading the music. Connie Jo Duncan, freshman from Hamlin, Texas, is the pianist and Cheryl Karnes from FL Worth is the featured soloist. These students are staying with the Marvin Wells f*iwily of Route 3, Greencastle. Nightly services will be held at 7:30 in tha community building at the Putnam County Fairgrounds. Special feature for Friday night will be folk group singing; several students in the Hardin-Simmons group are in folk singing groups and will sing for the fellowship meeting. The pubUe is invited to attend all revival services.

MrGfff Mews This week Historical Greencastle once again takes the air with two marvelous interviews with some of Greencastle’s most noted senior citizens. Historical Greencastle is designed to give the senior citizens of Greencastle an opportunity to relate thinge they remember from years ago. This week Mrs. Mary Wright will discuss the Fire of 1874 in Greencastle. This interview should be very enlightening in that Mrs. Wright remembers fills fire in her memory when she was s small girt. Following this Mrs. Florence Sigler will comment on the old building and establishments that used to be in Greencastle years ago. This series is designed to bring Greencastle of years ago back to life. For many of us I am sure that it will be a new and exciting experience. That’s this Sunday afternoon at 4:30 pm. over radio station WGRE.

Gorham-Hamm Wedding Announced

Maple Heights Home Demonstration Club will meet at the Club house at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 5th. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Elmore of Cloverdale were Sunday dinner guests of the Oral McCullough family of Coatesville. Mrs. Rita Beckner and children, Ricky, Cindy and Kathy, were luncheon guests of Mrs. Cordelia McCullough. Kappa Delta Phi Sorority will meat Tuesday, April 5th at 7:30 p.m. at the Gas Company room. All members please be present. Mr. and Mrs. Glendyn Irwin have returned to their home in Madison Township after a vacation in St. Petersburg, Florida. Crescent Club will meet Wednesday at 2:00 p. m. at the home of Mrs. George Williams. Mrs. Walter Ballard will have the program.

Miss Judy Hamm and United States Marine Private, Jesse L. Gorham were married in Indianapolis, March 3,1966. In the presence of his mother, Mrs. Vivian Gorham and her sister, Mrs. Robert Turner. For her wedding Miss Hamm wore a light blue tweed suit with navy accessories and a corsage of white carnations. Miss Hamm is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William O. Hamm of Ferguson, Ky., and is a Junior at Ferguson high school Mr. Gorham is the son of Jesse Gorham, Greencastle and Mrs. Vivian Gorham of Indianapolis. Mr. Gorham is stationed at 29th and Palms, Calif., where he has returned for further training and Mrs. Gorham has returned to the home of her parents in Ferguson to continue her studies at high school.

The Country Reading Club will meet with Mrs. Robert Rissler Wednesday, April 6th at 2 p.m. The League of Women Voters will have the program. Fathers Auxiliary No. 1 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet Wednesday at 7:30 p. m. at the Gen. Jesse M. Lee Post 1550 Home for nomination of new officers. Oasfie Toppers Home Demonetration Club will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Carl Myers. The lesson will be completed. All members please attend. The Young Mothers Study Club will meet at the Gold Medallion model home, In Rockville, at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Members should meet at the intersection at 7:30 p.m. Fortnightly Club will meet this evening at 7:30 with Mrs. Nonna Garber, 305 East Seminary Street with Miss Pearl O’Hair assisting hostess. Miss Grace Browning will have the program. Mrs. Dessa Parker of New Maysville was a luncheon guest Wednesday, Mar. 80, of Mrs. Cordelia McCullough of Coatesville. Mr. Parker and daughter, Patsy, Joined the McCullough family for the evening meal. Greencastle Eastern Star Chapter No. 255, will meet Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. After the regular routine of business, there will be a social hour with refreshments and entertainment All members are most welcome. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald McGuire of Brownsburg, R. R. l, entertained guests at a luncheon in their home a few days ago. A bountiful fried chicken dinner was served at the noon hour to the following guests, Mrs. Helen Williams of Manhattan, mother of Mrs. Jenny Lou McGuire, her aunt Mrs. Walter Page of North Salem and a dose friend, Mrs. Oral McCullough, Coatesville. In Marine Corps Gary Allen Stone, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gareld E. Stone of R. R. 3, Greencastle, has enlisted in the United Staten Marine Corps for a period of four years according to Staff Sergeant William D. Clark, representative for. the Marine Corps Recruiting Service in this area. Stone is now undergoing training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California where he will receive eight weeks of basic training followed by four weeks of advanced Infantry training at Camp Joseph H. Pendleton, California prior to returning home on a twenty day leave.

Police said he was thrown from the car, which thou rolled over his body. A similar wreck killed E. C. Gurry, 43, Elkhart, Saturday. Police said his ear rammed into the ride of a second vehicle, throwing Curry and his wife, Dorothy, 43, seriously injured, to tho pavement. The accelerator stuck in the car and it went in a circle, rolling over both their bodies. Mbs. Viola Drayer, 61, R. R. 4, Decatur, was killed when an auto driven by her husband, Henry, pulled into the side of a second car on Indiana 1 just inside Bluffton. Peru native Albert Barnes, 23, an airman at Bunker Hill Air Force Base, was killed Saturday in a one-car crash near Lakeville on U. S. 31, while Frederick Noens, 24, South Bend, was lolled when he pulled into the path of a New York Central train near South Bend. A two-car crash claimed the life of Roy Vanderford, 50, R. R. 7, Columbia City, Saturday. Thu first weekend victim was Stanley W. Grubbs, 21, Paris, Ky., who was killed when his car struck a guard rail on Interstate 65 in Jeffersonville. Faster Service At Reelsville The Youth Fellowship of the Reelsville Methodist Church will present an Easter service at 10:30 a.m., April 10, at the church. Through Scripture reading and special music, the last days of Jesus’ earthly life, His crucifixion, and finally His glorious Resurrection will be commemorated. Miss Janet Burger will narrate the first part of the program and the M.Y.F. choir will give special music. Sandra Bain and Kenneth Hutcheson are pianists for the group. To close the program, a play, “ARE YE ABLE? A Drama of the Cross,” by E. Jerry Walker, will be presented by the group. Characters are: Song Leader, Debbie Estes; Cross-makers, Max Battin and Keith Hutcheson; Nero, Mike Young; Catherine the Great, Kathy Young; Young Banker, Gary Mercer; Boy and Girl, Kenny Hutcheson and Sandra Bain; Four Youths, Barbara Troxell, Don Bain, Loretta Battin, and Brenda Owen; and Counselor, Martha Aker. Bob and Don Bain, a father and son team, will present a trombone duet. Miss Sonna Mercer will narrate the play. Jim Hersh, a graduate student at DePauw University, is pastor of the church. Representatives of 45 clubs in West Central Indiana will be present at this annual affair. Speaker at the occasion will be Dr. Robert D, McCullough, Lions International Director, well known osteopathic surgeon and outstanding speaker from Tulsa, Okla. These registered Holsteins and their actual performance records are: Indputco Paulareroy 5795467, a two-year-old, produced 17,760 lbs. of milk and 634 lbs. of butterfat in 305 days; Indputco Tin Tiny 5382328, a three-year-old, had 13,870 lbs. of milk and 534 lbs. of butterfat in 281 days. Both are owned by E. Drake Brookshire, Roachdale. Cinderella Ormsby Champion 4969143, a four-year-old owned by Marion F. Ferrand, Greencastle, produced 18,110 lbs. of milk and 676 lbs. of butterfat in 305 days. Market Manager Shot By Robbers INDIANAPOLIS UPI — George Hawkins, 21, assistant manager of an Indianapcljs supermarket, was shot apf wounded in a gunfight between a policeman and two holdup men Sunday night. Hawkini was hit in the hip and arm and was listed in fair condition at Methodist Hospital here. He was led away from the supermarket at gunpoint by the bandits who used him as a hostage in their getaway attempt. Police said one of the bandits shot Hawkins after they wrecked a police car stolen at the scene of the holdup. The car crashed into a fence after being hit by a police bullet. The two bandits fled on foot. Two suspects were later apprehended. One of them, who gave his name as Bobby J. Henson, 20, Indianapolis, was wounded in the leg by a bullet and was taken to Marion County General Hospital The other suspect was identified as Clinton Spivey, 19, Dayton, Ohio.

Republicans Held Brunch Saturday “Toss Your Hat In the Ring” was the theme of a well attended Meet Your Candidate brunch Saturday morning in the DePauw Union Ballroom. The Putnam County Republican Women's Club -sponsored the event to give opportunity for the citizens to meet the Republican candidates before Primary May 3rd. : All 6 Seventh District Congresisonal candidates were present and had an opportunity to speak. They all feel there are many issues in the coming election. Hie Republicans are tired of the foreign policy, war, high taxes, riots against embasetc. They feel things are in a sies, beatniks, flag desecration, mess. Some candidates called for unity within the party and pledged their support to whichever man won the Primary. The usual political jokes kept the audience relaxed. Mrs. Donald Pitts presided and introduced Mrs. Cecil Hardin, Republican National Commit tee woman; Robert Poor, Putnam County Chairman; and Mrs. Alice Mahoney, Vicechairman. Mr. Poor introduced every candidate present and gave them an opportunity to speak. Rev. Frank Helme gave the opening invocation followed by Flag Salute led by Mrs. Florence Boatright.

Red geraniums adorned the tables and were later given as door prizes. Black top hats and print sunbonnets were the favors. Candidates attending were: Mrs. Sparkle Crowe, Nick Pollus, Dan Crane, Larry Jones, Tom Mont, James Kessler, John Myers, Gerald Landis, John Thomas, Dave Todd, Sherman Kessler, Joe Harrison, Gene McFarland, Louie Hirt, Ted McKeehan, Albert Solomon, Ennis Masten, Waldo Shoemaker, Austin Jeffries, Bobby Albright.
