It seems to me that the term | "spring housecleaning’' is mere1 ly a figure of speech. A restless woman can break into a rash ! of dusting and scrubbing during j any season of the year. As an experienced observer of the moods of women, I ususually can detect the storm warnings which precede a housecleaning catastrophe. When it | appears that a major furniture- | shuffle, accompanied by rug beating and the like, are in the i offing, I sort of mosey off the premises and return when the dust has settled. Last week as I was sharing my housecleaning fears with one of the Veeps down at the Central National Bank, he surprised me by saying that he would be glad to help the womenfolk of this area clean house. This sounded to me like I a dangerous philosophy pro- } claimed by a man with a hole j it his head. He quickly restored^ny confiJ dence in his sanity by advancing ! his theory that in many house-
holds the dresser drawers, sugar bowls and even tin cans and fruit jars are cluttered with small change. My banker friend would like to gather these coins and store them in an orderly manner at the Central. With the sales tax and purchase prices in add pennies. It’s no trick at all to return from town with a pocketful of change. It is the custom of many to nightly empty their pockets and purses into a home savings account. Thrift is a wonderful virtue but this temporary hoarding contributes to the coin shortage now being experienced by all banks. To help relieve this lack of hard money, the Central Bank invites nousecleaners to bring in their coins which will be redeemed at 100 per cent of value. And it’s even possible to make a profit on the deal by placing these coin collections in an in-terest-bearing Central Savings Account. Copyright 1964, David Barr
