CONCERNING THE COACHES

\ —o—

The following article was clipped from this week’s issue of ‘‘Field Goals.” We think it’s of interest to all basketball fans and consequently we’re passing it on to you:

—For Rent—

FOR RENT: Small modern furnished apartment with water and heat furnished. Vacant the last week January. 702 east Seminary street. l2-2ts

FOR RENT—Semi-modem house. Rent reasonable. Phone 646-Y. ll-2p

FOR KENT—Six room modern | house and garage, good location, rent I reasonable. Inquire at 408 east Seminary street. 11-fits

An oyster is an intellectual giant compared with a coach. This is the dictum of a flock of drug store experts and all members of the Affiliated and Amalgamated Association of Second Guessers, that great organization that wins ball games around a pool or soda table the day after they have been lost on the floor. Of course that idea is all the hunk, but just the same there are a whole flock of “mentors,” ns the press so delights in branding them, that are mighty slow in waking up to what is going to happen to them unless the\ get together and follow the old adage to the effect that “in union, there is strength,” and that united we stand, divided we go boom.” , There is a coaches’ organization in Indiana, but out of something like 1,200 coaches eligible for membership less than 200 have taken the trouble to join the movement. In view of what has happened and what appears to be in the offing for the coaching fraternity in general, it Would he well for those engaged in the gentle art of teaching the young idea how to shoot, that is shoot basketballs, as well as those whose especial fields are football ami track, to get together and take steps toward

beard of the depression, panic, period ol readjustment, or just whatever this mess we are in happens to be, ami pnrtlv because of the theoretically beautiful but partically ineffective policy of non-resistance. Example of the disastrous results nt lack of a fighting, cohesive organization are ton numerous to mentionWe have just been treated to the picture of Japan, relatively small in population hut splendidly equipped and disciplined, running wild over the gigantic hut flabby China And some such fate as this is in -tore for these Indiana coaches unI' -s they get together. The vehicle for titling so is available. It simply is a matter of those more than 1,000 high school coaches joining an organization, already fordem and functioning. Only by some such means can they hope to battle successfully against a glowing movement to reduce them to a very subordinate position as a
