TRUCKS LEAD IN TRANSPCRT OF UYESTOOK my-- -ni ~ ’ iiMIHIIIWImMw INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Eighteen thousand trucks loaded with hogs, cattle and sheep arrive at the Indianapo is Stock Yards each month according to figures compiled by the Stock Yards Company. Included in this category are small farm truces, semi-trailers, one

and one-half ton farm vehicles, stock trailers and other transitory vehicles of various types. Figures at the yards prove conclusively that truck-hauls of stock from the breeder to the yards and from there to the buyer are in? creasing in leaps and bounds. AU hogs delivered to the stock yards in the Capital City arrive by truck. None are delivered by rail. On Monday, November 29, at the time the accompanying photograph was made, 16,225 hogs were delivered to the Indianapolis yards, missing by 4,225 the record set September 9 of this year which was an even 20,000. In the National picture the Indianapolis yards rank first in the hog market of the county during the months of August, September and October, relinquishing this ranking to other markets during the remaining months but always maintaining from 2nd to sth place. To quote from the record trucks haul to Indianapolis 100 per cent of the hogs raised in this state. They hauled 90 per cent of the cattle in 1953 and 91 per cent in the present year. Last year 89 per cent of calves delivered to the yards were truck-hauled while the 1954 total showed a rise of 96 per cent. Ninety-six per cent of the sheep arrived in Indianapolis via truck in 1953 while in 1954

b this figure went up to 100 pei cent. In October of this year 218.890 hogs arrived at the Indianapolis yards, an increase of 23,890 over last year’s figure which stood at an even 195,000. Statistics prove that 9,406 more cattle were truckhauled to this city in Octobei than in the same month last year. Although receipts of calves and sheep showed, respectively, a decline of 798 and 6,876 over last year, truck-hauls of these ani- * mals showed an increase of 7 per cent for the calves and 4 Hper cent for the sheep. u Headed for slaughter houses and elsewhere, 42.9 per cent of the hogs at yards left by truck in October, an ip irease of 5.9 per cent over last year at which time trucks hauled away 37 per cent Veteran stock men at the stock yards are marveling at the increase of cattle receipt totals. On Monday, November 29, figures showed that 5,001 cattle arrived by truck. This, according to attaches of the United States Department of Agriculture, approached closely the 1954 record for one day. The greatest number of hogs ever to arrive at the yards was on December 8, 1914, at which time 31,721 were delivered.
