SPECIAL TOWN NOTICE The Board recommended a special meeting March 16, to discuss the pre-“500” race problems with all interested persons. A letter will be sent to Speedway organizations, Indianapolis Police, State Police, Marion County Sheriff, and track officials inviting them to this meeting. Citizens present at this meeting requested that the race problems be discussed and solutions found to some of the more troublesome problems. There will be between 600 and 800 Lions attend this meeting and the First Vice President of Lions International, Lion Claude M. DeVorss will be the principal speaker at this meeting. UNDE3DR.MKTQN STERN TO BE HONORED Dr. Stem The National Association of Corrosion Engineers will present its Willis R. Whitney Award for 1963 to Dr. Milton Stern, manager of Speedway Research Laboratory of Union Carbide Corporation’s Linde Division. The Award will be presented at the Association’s annual banquet on March 11, to be held at the Sherman House in Chicago. The Whitney Award is the highest honor conferred annually by the NACE in recognition of contributions to the science of corrosion. Dr. Stem’s selection as the 1963 recipient is based on numerous scientific achievements which he has contributed as a Union Carbide research scientist. Dr. Stem was graduated from Northeastern University with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1949. He earned M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in Physical Metallurgy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1950 and 1952 under a research fellowship sponsored by the Aluminum Company of America. While serving as a research associate at M.I.T. from 1952-54, Dr. Stem received the Weirton Steel Company Post Doctoral Fellow Award. Upon joining Union Carbide in 1954, Dr. Stem worked in metals research for the Metals Division at Niagara Falls, New York. In 1960 he moved to Indianapolis to assume the position of Assistant Manager of Research at Linde’s Speedway Laboratory. In 1961, Dr. Stem became Manager of Research at Speedway. He has published more than 30 papers in the fields of corrosion, electrode kinetics, and physical metallurgy and has twice been honored by the Journal of the Electrochemical Society which presented him with its Young Authors Award in 1955 and 1958. Dr. Stem is a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, the ’National Assocation of Corrosion Engineers, the Electrochemical Society, the American Society for Metals, and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. He has participated actively in numerous committee activities of these organizations, serving as chairman of the Niagara Frontier section of NACE in 1959, as editor of the Journal of the Electrochemical Society from 1958 to 1961, and as chairman of the 1960 Gordon Research Conference on Corrosion. Dr. Stem resides in Indianapolis at 1418 Oakwood Trail with his wife Roberta and three sons, Mark, Lawrence and Brian. Byron Thompson Wins Music Awards Byron Leo Thompson, nine year Old son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Thompson, 1938 MacArthur Lane, Speedway, won a trophy and a blue ribbon with his Spanish Guitar in the regional contest of the American Guild of Music, held at the Netherland Hilton Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also won a blue ribbon for Tapping. He studies guitar with the Woodward Academy of Music, Speedway and he studies Tap at the Eileen Garrison School of Dancing. LEAP YEAR BIRTHDAY Miss Mary Anne McCartney celebrated her second official birthday on February 29. By not having an actual birthday but every 4 years, Mary Anne alternates her unofficial birthdays by celebrating on year on the 28th of February . and the following year on March Ist This year she celebrated her second with a great aunt Mrs. Margaret Thurston, Greenwood, Indiana, who was either 19 (leap year) or 80. Mrs. Thurston went from 1896 to 1904 without an “official birthday.” She missed February 1900 as it was not legally a leap year even tho divisible by four. College Of Christian Living Headliner 'Jf r w Rev. Alan Jones Rev. Alan T. Jones, director of the Merom Institute, a conference renewal center for the United Church of Christ, will be the speaker and leader qf recreation for the All Family Church Program in the College of Christian Living on Sunday night, March 8. Mr. Jones, after graduating from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, studied for one year in the University of Hoile in Germany. He has been a college teacher, parish minister, and for the past 17 years, director of the Merom Institute. Recreation is very much a hobby for Mr. Jones, but part of a total Christian faith, that leisure time is to be used to the glory of God. Merom Institute is the birth place and home of Indiana’s largest recreational workshop which meets under Dr. Jone’s direction during the third week of each May. During the class session which begins at 5:25 p.m., Rev. Jones will be discussing with the youth of the Senior Highs, ‘Tiecreation for Youth.” After the snack supper, which will be served by the Christian Home Builders Class, Mr. Jones will lead the whole church in a family type recreational workshop.
