Active in civic affairs of Speedway and Marion County for 25 years, the Major also is a member of St. Christopher’s church, the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Police, Police League of Indiana, F. 8.1. National Academy Association, Marion County Area Police Services, and Indiana and National Sheriffs Associations. He has represented the Sheriffs Association and the Police League as instructor at training schools and at Purdue and Indiana as well. “If selected as the Democratic candidate, I will continue the fine rebuilding program of the Department as instituted by Sheriff O’Neal,” Maj. Shields said. Some points of this program are: 1. That the Marion County citizen will have respect for the Department and hold its personnel in high regard to honesty, integrity and ability; 2. Continued training for personnel; 3. Seek adeuate euipment for use of the Department; 4. Expand an effective county patrol, both in traffic and criminal work; 5. Encourage the traffic safety education program; 6. Continue the fight for a new Marion County Jail; 7. Tolerate absolutely no gambling; 8. Continue the good service to the attorneys and courts. “If given the opportunity by my party and the good citizens of Marion County, I believe I can accomplish this job in a sound and practical way,” Shields said. “I also would like to thank all the news media and the police department of Marion County and other governmental units as well as the citizens of this fine community for their patience and help to the Department in the last seven years. It certainly made our job easier, and without this help the Department cannot succeed.”
