Why Are Yau Different (Continued from Page 1) put you out of commission before the event arrived. The day after you first prayed for health you felt wonderful. You cleaned the stove and refrigerator and washed curtains. You went to bed tired and happy. You woke up rested to do more cleaning which had been neglected for months. This went on for three or four days. Then the day before Thanksgiving, when you were to do the marketing, you woke up tired, listless and headachey. In the afternoon you managed to get to the supermarket and back. The next day it was no better. Thank goodness you weren’t having guests. Just the nine of you. The turkey was stuffed and baking. Candied sweet potatoes, cranberries, salad. There would be Thanksgiving dinner, but no •you’ left over to spend on sweetness and light. Grim determination got the dinner. Then someone in the family, tired of a long string of grim holidays said “What are you going to do in another ten or fifteen years when you’ll have grandchildren and in-laws coming for Thanksgiving?” Oh, dear God help met Fm so alone. Why is what I am supposed to have so much greater than what I can do? It is not unreasonable for my family to expect to celebrate a holiday. Why do You give me a job to do and not the strength to do it? Help me to understand. Help me to accept. The next few days every movement is like moving under water. No matter what you are doing you are fighting the desire to go sit in the big leather chair. You spend more and more time in bed. No one, except you, realized how much time because by now you have perfected the trick of answering the phone in a wide awake voice, even though seconds before you’d been in deep sleep. BUT EVEN by sleeping fourteen or fifteen hours out of twen-

ty-four you are never rested. You cannot say five decades of the rosary aloud, either leading or following. You cannot read aloud to the children. After one page your voice sinks to a whisper. To speak is like sawing wood. A few times when drinking liquids your throat suddenly closes and refuses to accept it You choke and gasp for breath. You learn to drink and swallow slowly and deliberately. By the middle of December you’re just existing. Breathing is such an effort that you wonder how much longer you can go on doing even that. In desperation you grasp at a straw. You know the name of a woman who has some kind of disease which produces extreme tiredness. You’d failed to investigate this before because you’d heard that it was controlled with vitamins and rest. You’d tried every available vitamin, and rest for the mother of seven was slightly impossible. But now you were looking just for a name. For a name and understanding. You wanted to understand yourself why you were different from other people. And also you hoped to have others understand so that you might partially fill the gap between what was expected of you and what y»u were able tp dp. , . . A TALK WITH this woman convinced you that you might have the same disease as she: MYASTHENIA. A call to the office of the doctor specializing in this disease revealed that he was out of town and it would be several weeks before you would be able to see him. Hope gave you a measure of energy and you went to your family doctor. “I think I have MYASTHENIA,” you said with preliminaries. “Oh no,” he said slowly, “I don’t think so, at least I hope not.” Still the look on his face told you that he was not entirely ruling out the possibility.
“Will you put me on the drug and see?” you pleaded. He agreed and you left the office with a prescription in your pocket. A pocket full of gold. But on the way home you wondered. What did he mean, “I hope not.” YOU’D FORGOTTEN to ask what the future held for a myasthenia patient. Was it fatal? You

couldn’t believe that, somehow fatal diseases are well known, even when relatively rare. Still, horrible pictures came to mind. You saw yourself flat in bed, unable to move. You saw yourself in a wheel chair your body twisted and useless. But even these didn’t stop your quest for a name. After all, you weren’t deciding to have or not have this disease. Something was wrong with you and if this was it, then this was it. No matter what, you wanted to know. (To Be Continued Next Week)
