Pleading, for the return of the wallet the soldier said, "You can keep the money if you'll return the picture of my wife." His wife was killed in the bombing of Pearl Harbor and he had kept the picture safe throughout six months in an enemy prison camp by hiding it in the heel of his shoe.

Like our wives they usually get what they want ?.nd as dairymen it's up to us to (rive it to ihcn: if we are to get the most out of ou.efforts at milk production. One of the most important tl.inrjs I've observed about consumers of dairy products is that tfiey want dairy products theyeararound. They don't stop buying cheese and milk and ire cream when the cow goes dry or when production drops. That means that the dairy industry has a serious problorn during thefhiahin the spring and aaiu during the latter part of the year when miik flow in at low ebb. With this seasonal feast or famine each one of us should ask ourselves, "How can I help smooth out the peaks and valleys in milk production?" There are several answers to that Questioa First let's breed all open heiiers that are old enough NOW so .' that they will freshen next fall. Next we can arrange a pat tern of breeding dates forthcrest of our cow s that will work them toward more even freshening throughout the year. Then we can build up our pastures in mid-summer and fu'.l r.r.J get the increased production that comes with good grazing. There are several advantages to such a program. Second you will have a chance to get better calves because they can be barn fed during those first few critical weeks while their little tummies are developing and getting ready to take care of that good spring grazing.
