I have already written of my visit to camps In thrr divisions of the third region. Let rne now write of my sneaking mission to camps in the other two divisions. In tlio Jkmrpes Division. The city of Bourses, before the war wa-s a city of 43,000, but during the wax the city almost doubled its population. It H a quaint old place, whose magnificent cathedral attracts trw attention every year of thousand of visitor?. To the United States army PourKcs is an Important center because her Is situated the central records office, whcru aro kept the records of the A. K. K. Here too, is the central postoffice of the United States army. In he Bourses division there are four important camps one at Mormanue, one at Focey. one (rolore.I) at Mehun and one within the limits of the city of Bourpes. The latter, which contains about 5,000 soldiers. Is known as the central records camp. This camp is one of the most permanent in France as many m:n have been employed, because of their special ability, in the records office ever since coming across the Atlantic. In this camp are. many men from college and university. Here are to be found expert accountants, auditors and trained men who day after day, toil to keep fully and accurately all the records of the A. IT. F. In this work they are efficiently assisted by ."00 Fnsi;h youny women :m min ts of the W. A. A. C, Woman's Army Auxiliary Corps. Meets Local Man. I hud the pleasure of meeting at the records camp, Mr. Mortimer J. Odell. 73S Cushing st.. South Bend. Mr. Odell holds a responsib'e position, as he is attached to tne personnel department. I To has had some, most interesting experiences in France, and perhaps ere this letter reaches the press, he will be relating them to friends in South Bend. When I naw him last, at the close of my Ben Hur lecture, ho looked exceediriKly happy for two reasons. First, because he expected soon to Ko home: and second well, I Khali lei him give particulars In regard to that. Y Has Tilg Hut. The huge V. M. C. A. hut at the central records camp is well equipped. It's "one hundred foot' auditorium Is splendidly lighted and heated with eight large stoves, four on either ßido of the room. The hut secretary, Mr. J. IZ. Hornbeck, from Lyons, Indiana, Is one of the most courteous and efficient secretaries I havo met in France. During the three days I wns in the Bourges division I had the privilege of preaching twice, and lecturing three times in thiu hut. And be It raid to the credit of the men of the A. K. y. and the women of the AV. A. A. C. that they crowded, for permon and lecture, that great auditorium. On two occasions, between one and two hundred men, who were unable to secure scats, stood during the entire service, w hile many heard from outside tho building, through the open doors of the hut. To speak to snch a throng twice a day (as I did Sunday morning and evening. Monday afternoon and niuht) is no easy task: but be it said once more to tho credit of the men that they lighten the task of both singer and speaker by tho eagerness, the courtety .and the patience with which they listen to the message. Tlirv Welfare Societies. There aro three other welfare societies besides the V. M. A., that are in operation in the city of Bourges. rlrat. the Knights of Colurai-i's. I have been informed, not an afternoon or evening parses without many of our soldier boys gathering to enjoy the homelike atmosphere of the club. The Jewish Welfare hoard. This organization opened a splendid club house in Bourges on April ,, last, and during the past month has done a commendable work. I had a couple of pleasant visits with the secretary. Babbi Abraham Burstein of Cleveland. I also met Samuel A. Baker of New York, who is employed by the board to see that the graves of all Jews are properly marked with the shield of David. Tiie V. W. A. is also in active operation in Bourges. The following paragraph froni'the paper called "The Cro" and published by the central r cords office speaks for itself: "OtT from tho beaten path trod by the footsteps of men. back in a corner of 'No Man's Band.' across the fence, in a one-story biUj -ing of six rooms, is located a project that has done more to make the life of thf W. A. A. C's. attached to the Central records office comfortable that! anything else. "e refer to the V. W. C. A. canteen, recreation and rest rooms. Bver since the W. A. A. C's. have been laboring in the records office the American Y. W. f A. has ministered to the social life of these British girls." In the ccrs Division. Nevers. with a population of 4.V mm, is one of the most beautiful cities I have visited in France. Bike Bourges. it boasts of an exceedingly fine and most imposing cathedral. I spent three days in the Nevers division, which includes in all some 22 Fnited States camps, scattered over an area stretching I'o miles, north, south, cast and west of the city. I received a most cordial welcome to the division from Maj. (I. C Stull, who is senior chaplain of the third region, and with office at Nevers. Together we isited the two American cemeteries at Nevers. I read the names tu the crosses "row on row." and though I knew not the soldier boys who lie buried there, nevertheless, my he.trt was with the mothers and fathers across the sea whose sorts, lighting in France, have made the supreme sacrifice that "the world might be made safe for democracy." During the brief time spent in the Nevers division i had time to visit only the larger camps of two of which I wish to write a little more fully. The engineers camp is situated just outside the city of Nevers. Here I was most graciously received byfather H. B. White of South Bend, the chaplain of the camp. The good Father looks exceedingly- well. In fact if I be a judge, t would say thai the khaki becomes him better than the curates robe. Whether the chaplain is responsible for the neatness and trim appearance of the camp I know not but I can say that the camp is one of the best kept up I have s en in France. Is Happy in Work. During the war .it'd since all "major operations' idi all motors were performed at Verne nil. I went through tho shops, also the la rite warehouses where are to be found in .-reit quantity spare parts of all standard automobiles. I shall not attempt to describe the hop nor tho gr-at warehouses. Their tremendous size astounds one and impr -s the , ji;or with the greatness of the task undertaken by the American army for the winning of the war. ent yesterday when the shop closed and the men started for camp. We passed the fJermans escorted by Fnited States guards, as they made their way to the prison enclosure. Visits Prison Ca nips. Through the courtesy of an officer I was taken inside the double wire stockade and visited barracks after barracks where the German prisoners lodge. These barracks are identical with those where our own hoys, sleep.- The Germans have a line entertainment hall where they have their own shows and concerts. I was taken into the large kitchen where the Germans cook their food. As I entered it, the officer remarked "The fJermans 'live better than we do." "How is that?" I inquired. "Wei!." was the reply, "they get the same r.iw meats, flour, etc., that we do. but the Germans can beat our boys cooking as they employonly professional cooks, whereas we often have men detailed from the army to do our cooking, who never were taught the art." The head German cook pulled out of the oven and exhibited for our examination some tempting pans of meat and then he showed us some huge doughnuts. "They're fine," I said. "Vah-Yah" he replied, "tire, fine." I had but one regret and that was that that line cook did not invite us to sample his wares. Men Built Hut. The Y. M. C. A. hut at Verncu.il too was built by the men of Uie camp and they aro justly proud of it. Its auditorium comfortably seats 1100 although ;:000 may be put into it. It "also is Built in theater form and its acoustic properties are splendid. All religious services are in the hands of Chaplain Biggs. When 1 was introduced last night I was at once convinced that even this size of auditorium was not too large for the camp, as we noted that many men wore forced to stand. Kev. K. M. Bittenhouse, assisted by the line camp orchestra led the men in singing "Brighten the Corner," and "When the Boll is Called up Vender. " It did me good to hear that large body of men, ably assisted by tho officers, who occupied the front seats, sing those two popular son. cs of the A. K. F. Once more I was convinced that both officers and men are responsive to the religious message, whether it comes in song or sermon. Health is Ilxcollcnt. And now may 1 add this personal word, especially for the benefit of friends who have written me concerning my health and to whom I may not be able to write personally. I am in the best of health, have not been indisposed one hour since coming to France and whether by auto or train 1 have been able every day to keep my engagements. I have been entertained in all varieties of style during the past month. In the big camps of St. Aignan and Gievres away from city and town I have bunked in a barlacks, wherever I could lind an empty cot and blankets enough to keep warm: at Tours we- occupied a room at the Y. M. C. A. hotel; at Bourges and Nevers. I tried-the comforts of the French inns and at Verneuil I had the pleasure of being entertained at an old French chateau, now used as an officers' club house.
