Clifford Durant, only millionaire race-driver who has been a consistent supporter of tho pport in recent years, champion of the Pacific coast, and who has teen praying for a revival of the Indianapolis 500-mile races ever since the armistice was bipned. wasted no time and is tho first to make entry to the IJbertv Sweepstakes race, which will be run on May 31, 1919. Durant, as a man of means, ranks with the late David Bruce-Brown and Caleb Bragg, the millionaires who raced in the hrst 500-mlle at Indianapolis. Brag may f-tart this yar, but at present ho Is a.i army aviator and has not been a competitor since he was relief driver for De Palma in 1515. It will bo Durant's first start in an Indianapolis 500-mile and he may be th only driver entered able to write a check of six ciphers. It Is not for a slice of the ?50,

In everyday life Durant is head of the Oakland factory cf the Chevrolet company and represents his father, W. C. Durant, the automobile magnate, on the coast. He will drive a Chevrolet Special. Now Durant comes out and states that he will retire after the coming season. It will not be his first retirement. His father does not look

with favor on Cliffs speed flights. The first retirement came when the late Boh Burman, who, incidentaly, taught Cliff all about an automobile, was killed in a raco on the coast. It was at his father's request that he cold his several racing cars. In paying a last tribute to Burman, TV. C. Durant thought only of his son when he wrote, "Shrapnel and shell furnish no greater danger than automobile racing and there is but one outcome for those who persist in following it." It was said that Später" Durant threatened to cut the young driver off without a cent. However, it took only a few months for Cliff to convince his father that he could race in safety and he was back again in the fall races on the coast. Now he asserts that business cares prevent his giving sufficient time to racing, but the fans believo that the elder Duraftt has given his son a chance to win the "race of races" and then retire for all time.

nnsuMiTiox or auto QUANTITY PRODUCTION DLTIIVDS OX WAIt WORK In Fpeaking o? the ability of automobile manufacturers to regain volume production quickly, an official of the Franklin Company stated that this accomplishment depended a great deal on the extent to which different plants were disturbed on account of war work. It is likely that some manufacturers those who have had little war work, or those who have erected separate plants for war wqrk will be able to adapt their facilities most readily. The Franklin Automobile Company, which has devoted its plant to work on Illspano-Sulza and RollsRoyce airplane engines is getting back to production again. The first week of peace showed a production of only four cars, the second week 17 cars, with a gradual increase up to the present output of from TO to SO cars per week. Some idea of

the transition ahead can be got by comparing this output with the normal capacity of the Franklin factory of 225 cars per week. In line with the resumption of production. Franklin prices have been readjusted to a peace-time basis. The Franklin Company looks for very little change for some time to come in manufacturing expense, which Includes labor and materials. Recent quotations In the material market even show a tendency (or greater cots. Labor at the Franklin factory has recently been placed on an eight-hour basis, with a nine-houj working day. which scale is equivalent to a 10Cc increase in wages.

Motor Department: How can I repair a small crack in the water jacket of my engine, due to freezing? The crack doe not extend into the cylinder, so tho engine is uninjured. Is there some simple way of closing up the crack without having it wielded? G. F. You may purchase a cement called "?mooth On," which is said to be very good for such minor repairs. Motor Department: My Ford, 1917 model, runs perfect with spark and gas throttle all the way up, but when the t?park is advanced to running position the engine runs irresularly. Where shall I expect to locate the trouble? W. C. F. Either a badly worn timer or a weak timer spring will cause this. Possibly the clamp has come loose, giving a poor contact in the Jimer as you speed up. Motor Department: Please answer the following questions on tires: 1. What is expected of an inner tube? 2. Why are solid tires not used? 3. Could there be an improvement on- the present inner tube, one that could not puncture or have to be pumped full of air? 4. Does a car ride smoother with tube filled to its limit or medium? II. R. 1. The sole purpose of the inner tube is to hold the air. It must be a good grade of rubber, elastic enough so that it will not burst if pumped up larger than its rated diameter. 2. fkilid tires do not give the air cushion needed to protect the passengers and mechanism from shock. 3. It is to be hoped that

some such improvement will bo made some day. Devices like ln-ter-llners only heat up the tire and so damage it. 4. The pressure in the tire should be IS pounds an Inch of small diameter for front tires and 20 pounds for rear.' Any less pressure would cause heat and damage the tire. Any mors pressure would make the tire too hard and so damage the mechanism. Motor Department: Please settle

an argument as to tlv.j correct name of the coil used wi'h an ignition system. Some call it: a spark coll, some an induction coil and others a transformer coil. Which is right? M. R. They are all correct, but the name most frequently used is induction coil. This is because the battery current of low Voltage induce another current of high voltage. As this transforms the voltage it ia properly called a transformer coil, or a ftep-up transformer. The name "spark coil" was formerly confined to a single wound coil used with the make and break system of ignition, but is now applied to any coil which will give a fpark strong enough to jump an air gap. Motor Department: Have just bought an old car wiyi an oiling system I don't understand. It consists of a box with a gauge into which I put the oil. A belt fuel pipe from the tank is obstructed or runs to a pulley on the box and six plungers work up and down on top. Oil pipes run from the bottom of

HKWFUIj hints. Moving the tires forward as they wear is one of the best ways to prolong their life. If you start with all new tires, run them for about half their guaranteed mileage, and then exchange front and rear. The greatest strain and wear comes on the rear tires, and to these should always be the htxongest and newest.

As for the right and left sides, the right wears first, because the road is rougher, the weight of the car is thrown that way by the crown of the road. So move your tires forward as they wear out in the following sequence The new tire should be placed on the right gear, then moved to the left rear, then to the right front, then to the left front.

Tour spare tire will be the newest and least used. When a tire must be removed for repairs you will use the spare tire in its place until it is returned, when it should go back to its original position.

Keep a close tab on the mileage of each tire as it will enable you to determine which makes are best, if you are using your tires right, and also give you a basis to argue from before the tire adjuster. Note the speed dometer reading and the date when it is taken off, and total these amounts even' time you make a change. A separate page in your notebook should be devoted to each tire. You may identify It bv the manufacturer's serial number rtamred on it. It is not enough to earn, an extra spare or two, pumped ip. and an extra tube, or so under the rear seat. Carry a complete patching outnt and a blowout pntch and tire .sleeve. They take very little room and may save a lot of time when on a long trip, as there i no telling how many blowouts you may hae on any one trip.

bottom of the crank case you will lind some oil cocks. Open them .and let out all the oil which will run out. If none runs out ehake the car slightly, as the oil may oe just level with the tops of these ttandpipes. They do not drain all the oil. but only bring it down to the right level. After you have run the engine one one hour open these valves again and see if oil runs out. Adjust the feed so that there will be jutt a little too much oil at the end of each day's run. Always open these valvts at the end of the day and drain out the surplus. Motor Department: What attention does a leather lined clutch need? K. P. A leather lined cone clutch should be kept in condition by the application of a little neatsfoot oil to the leather once a month. The clutch must be thrown out to apply this and then it must be held out all night, so that the oil may be absorbed by the leather and not f-queezod out by the spring. If there is a greasecup on the hub of the clutch see that it (s kept filled and turn it down one turn every day. If there is no cup the clutch bearing is oiled from the gear-set, eo that the only care there is to keep the oil up to the level of the shaft. Engage the clutch gently so as not to strip the leather or wreck the gears, universal joint, etc. If the clutch commences to take hold suddenly, instead of starting tho car smoothly, it shows that the clutch leather is drying out and needs neatsfcot oil. Motor Department: On level roads my engine seems to run nicely, but it will not make much speed. On climbing a hill it sterns to give cut, but when 1 stop for n few min

ute. it will pull very well for a short distance, when it requires the same rest to make it pull. I cannot make speed anjwhere, though I open th throttle wide, and when I do It seems to choke and I lose all tho epeed I have. The carburetor is new and the valves are all ritTht. It is hard to start when it has been standing- over night. It seems like the engine will not or cannot draw the gasoline from the carburetor. What do you advise me to do? T. E. It would seem that the carburetor or the low speed adjustment Is set too lean. If you have a vacuum system it may not be working properly. You may disconnect the fuel pipe to nee if the gasoline runs through it freely and clean the

screen at the carburetor, if there is one. Then try opening the epray nozzle slightly, but if no improvement is evident hav an expert look over the system. For troubles in the vacuum system look up the service station where repairs will be made without charge. It is always dilficult to start an engine when cold. Try priming the cylinders with gasoline. Motor Department: When my

You will find an opening on the rear axle housing to receive it. Do not put in too much, a it will run out and get on the brakes and tires. If the noise is still there you should bring the car to a stop when in 6uch position and note whether grinding noise occurs with engine idling. Also declutch and coast with engine dead. You may determine whether the trouble is in the engine or elsewhere. Motor Department: I own a Maxwell car, 1918 model, run about

C,00G miles. Recently the starting box shaft broke while using the starter, stripping the flywheel. I had local garage mechanic install new shaft and flywheel. Also had valves ground. Since then the vibration is terrible, the engine has no power on a hard pull, one or more cylinders mls, apparently first one and then another. Compression

seems to be good, but performance !
