ness do attain eminence among their fellow men and become leaders in hur h and state, in business, in art or letters. Some kh1 men hrink from prominence and refuse the exalted positions to which providence find their fellow-men have called them. This. I think to be a mistake; a man should never hid his light under a bushel nor refuse tri lead when h has both the ability and the opportunity to do so. Vainglory Is Ignoble. To seek to bo served rather than seek to serve, to seek to rule rather than seek to be governed, or to make laws for our fellow men until w ha. 's first learned to ob?y th law. is anything but praiseworthy. The spirit of Jesus Christ was t serve. He stated that he came into the world to serve and not to be served. The purpose of the Incident of washing his disciples feet was to teach them that they should seek to do anything, however humble It mi'-rht be, which would be of service to their fellow men. lie said to them, after the incident above referred to, "Tor I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you". If through our desire to serve we become first then happy Indeed are we. True Ixaler ! Always Servitut. Faithful kings, presidents, governors, or other leaders of men work very much harder than their followers. A successful merchant or manufacturer, as a rule, works harder than his employes. ILLNESS, DEATH, OR OTHER TROUBLES COME, ANY MINISTER

of every member or that church if he be a true pastor. The teacher of a IJiMe class works very much harder than his most faithful scholar. The first member, or leader of any community, in order to retain Iiis leadership, must be the servant of his followers; he must have their interest at heart and be always thinking how he can add to their health, their happiness, and their general well being. This Is the spirit of every follower of Jesus Christ. Aim to lie Ilrst In Merit. True humility does not consist in being content wi?h a mediocre position nor with ordinary success. It does not rest In Its present attainments but Its ambition Is always to excel. It Is absolutely essential that we aim to be first In merit, to be successful In the work with which (Jod has entrusted us. If we would receive from (5od, in that Kreat day his "Well done, thou good and faithful servant". No matter what a

man's occupation may be. he ought to constantly aim to excel, to Improve his output if not in quantity, then surely In quality, but generally in both. A man must grow unless he Is willing to be dead before physical death overtakes him. No man Is so old that he may not Improve today upon the work of yesterday. Noblest Tiling1 I to Serve. No matter what may be the social sphere in which we find ourselves, nor whether we are rich or poor, prominent or obscure, we shall find that we attain to the noblest things as we seek to serve and not to be 14. Verse S. Why is it impossible to be a disciple of Jesus unless our lives are devoted to doing good? 15. Verses 9, 10. How would you explain the love of God; what is it; what does it do? 16. How do we manifest our love for Jesus? 17. Verse 11. What is the ultimate, subjective desire of the human heart which, in the gospel, is promised to us as a reward? 18. If a Christian has not joy in his heart at all times would you say or not, and why, that he Is living below his privilege in Christ? 19. Verses 12--6. How may wo live so as to love God with all our hearts, love one another, and be perfectly contented, God always answering all our prayers? 20. What may any earnest soul, who is not living: a satisfactory life do, right now, in order that he may enter into, and enjoy all the blessedness Christ has provided? The men who are self seekers always lose themselves, while the men who seek the welfare of others, save themselves, nnd in proportion as they succeed In helping others do they Increase the robust joy of living. There Is no life so rich in Its fruitful as a life of service devoted to our fellow men. The reason that Jesus la the greatest man born of woman, is because he was the greatest in service, and all men will approach to the greatness of Jesus In proportion as they practice his life of service.

XKW VOLVMK OF IOI-:.MS. Half a dozen books of verse hae preceded Richard Burton's newvolume. "Poems of Earth's Meaning," to be published by the Holts I on ;viay itn. Five or them are I lyric books, the sixth the poetic I drama, "Rahab," played by Do.iald- ; son Robinson through the west. No anthology of the last 20 years fails to contain examples of this writer's song. When Ids earliest book. "Dumb in June," was published in 1S96, the first edition was sold in live days, and that book has been steadily in demand ever since, thousands having been disposed of. Certain Burton lyrics have long since been taken into the affectionate memory of countless people. Here is one that is constant y quoted: IIIIIIU.lt J IIUV II. I High thoughts and noble in all lands Help me; my soul is fed by Kuch But, O the touch of lips and hands. The human touch! i Warm, vital, close, life's symbol's dear. These need I most, and now and here. FA It KAST TALISS. It will be difficult for readers to believe that the stories in Henrietta Weaver's "Flame and the .Shadow Kater" (Life and Death) are of her own invention, and not native tales retold. The author has steeped herself in the literature of the far east and successfully put into these beautiful and interesting etories the philosophy of Tersia and India which has recently had such a wide appeal for American readers. This book will be published by Messrs. Henry Holt &. Co. on May 17. On the same day the same house will issue Sir Arthur Quil'.er-Couch's "Workmanship of Shakespeare," being material taken mainly from this well-known professor's lectures delivered in the University of Cambridge, which also have had fuccessful periodical publication. In these papers Sir Arthur peeks to discover, in some of his plays, just what .Shakespeare was trying: to do as a playwright. Among the papers included are: "Macbeth:" "Midsummer Night's Dream;" three chapters on "Shakespeare's LMer Workmanship;" '"The Tempest (three chapters); "Falstaff" and three chapters on "Hamlet." line, pastor. Talk about patriotism! Our waste basket is not going to be beat, for even it Is decorated in red, white and blue. Our art subject for composition work was "Plowing," by Rosa Bonheur. The absentees last week were: George Kropff, Charles Loomis, Charles Bill and Arthur Wobler. "Our Baby" was too much for us to write on this week so we did not write any composition for The NewsTimes. SIXTH GRADE. Our memory gem for this week

is: In the world's broad field of battie. In the bivouac of life Be not like dumb-driven cattle Be a hero In the strife. We sympathize with Shirley I Johnston, one of our classmates, for we know what it is to lose a father. Neat seat werk for last week was done by Harold Miller, Sorge Rivard, Francis Anderson and Lawrence Mann. We celebrated May day on Tuesday by having special devotions 10 Our Blessed Iidy in our classroom. We have a beautiful May altar in our room with a large statute of the Blessed Virgin In the center and blessed candles on each si-ie of the statute and vigil lights in front of it. The altar is also beautifully decorated with violets and hyacinths; and by the end of another week we hope to have a greater and still more beautiful variety of flowers. The Very Rev. Father La Fontaine, the parochial school examiner of the diocese of Fort Wayne, visited our room last Friday morning. He was very much pleased with our work and especially with the discipline and the spirit of the boys. The boys in time for mass last week were: Serge Rivard, Francis Anderson and James McCay. Last week Francis Anderson was the only boy who received 100 percent in written spelling. We are getting into us a patriotic spirit for we are learning many patriotic songs. Harold Miller and Serge Rivard were the only boys that i knew the medley of patriotic airs by memory so they wen the prize. Edgar Smith decorated our waste paper basket with red, white and hlue. "You're some artist," Edgar! SEVENTH GRADE. The boys in time for mass this week were: John Stoeckley, Edward LipetRka, Paul Benz, Joseph liognar, William Humphrey, Edward Beach, Richard Keogan and William Oberly.
