ii Fair and Warmer Is Good for an Evening Lugh "Fair and "tV'armer" is pood foan evenin of laughter. The farce which was presented at the Oliver last evening before one uf those "small but appreciative" audiences will be repeated this afternoon and tonight. Avery Hopw.xd has reversed the ordinary course and in thi3 farce the "best wine." the richest humor, comes In the htst act. The play starts out brightly, sparkling" and scintillating with clever lines and some funny situations which come rear the promised uproarioufmess. Admitting that the appeal of the remaining two acts of the farce may very well differ according lo the individual it is not to be doubted that there is marked deterioration as the play proceeds in the quality of its humor. What there is in the drunken antics of a man, let alone a woman, to tickle the risibilities probably will always remain a mystery; but they remain amon the potent charms in the playwright's ba?r of tricks.' The second act of "Fair and Warmer" is no tribute to the discrimination of playgoers still it may be argued with a good deal of logic that little such discrimination exists. There are three elements of saving grace. A very easily overdone situation was presented with a finesse that reflected much credit on the cast all were capable players, and all of their best work, again, was in the first act. Second, the whole thing was utter farce, making serious criticism nearly bootless, and third, the risoue tone was robbed of its offensiveness by the frankness of its presentation. "Fair and Warmer" is a play to laugh si as one will, -without both ering about the "significance" of the modern American stage and plays. AT Tili: AUDITORIUM. William S. Hart is appearing at the Auditorium today in "The Devil's Double." Hart plays the part of a faro dealer, who falls In love with an artist's wil and thus consents to pose for the artist as the devil. It's a typical Hart part and said to be one of the best pictures he has yet appeared in. He is supported by Enid Markey as the wife and Robert McKim in the part of the artist. "Safety First," a tworeel Keystone comedy, is also on the bill. Tomorrow William Fox will present George Walsh in "The Island of Desire." As the hero of this stirring story he travels to the untamed regions of the South seas, lie does battle with an Australian adventurer, a Chinese Villian, drunken beach combers, and, finally a horde of cannibals. He fights with his fists, he fights with weapons, he fights with dynamite, and the fortunes of war vary until the very end of the story'- The SeligTrlbune weekly of current events will be shown as usual. at Tin: IjAsalle. Lenore Ulrich is starred in "The Road to Love," shown at the Lasalle theater today. The story concerns the daughter of an Arabian chief who falls madly in love with a white man. Her father, in anger, caused him to be sold as a slave. Wonderful scenic effects have been obtained showing the beautiful Algerian streets and the sunset on the desert. "The Seekers" Is the title of tomorrow's five-reel drama of religious community life In which Flora Parker Dehaven Is starred. , AT TirE CX) LOMAL. Mary Nash will be seen at the Colonial theater today in "Arms and the Woman." The manufacture of ammunition in America for use In warring Europe is the subject around which the plot centers. Miss Nash Is seen in the role of the Hungarian girl who marries her American benefactor and learns later that his business is the manufacture of arms for the enemies c her own country. A fire scene is shown when the large ammunition plant is blown up by spies. Tomorrow's picture is entitled "The Master Passion." It stars Mabelle Trunnelle and Robert Conness. AT Tili: OKPIITXM. The present bill of vaudeville now playing at the Orpheum features Frank Stafford & Co. in a pleasing sketch entitled "The Hunter's Game." Mr. Stafford's whistling and the posing of his two famous dogs are features. Mr. Stafford is assisted by Marie Stone. A travesty on divorce entitled "Women" is presented by three girls, no man appearing in the act. Freddy James accompanies his Juggling with pleading patter. Lew and Mollie Hunting in a comedy skit entitled "The Amateur Detectives" and Will ! Morris, cycling comedian, complete the program. "THE PRINCKSS PAT." "The Princess Fat," one of the most charming of all the musical comedies produced in New York during the last few years, will be the attraction at the Oliver theater on Jan. 13 and 16. Heading the cast will be Ruth Welch, who sang the title role in New York, and during the long run of the piece last spring in Roston. Then there will be such other artists as George O'Donnell. Raymond Ellis. Karl ftall. Thonas Keogh, Charles Udell. ?.Ur.guerite Stratselle, Lyman and Chaulsae and other of real prominence.
