Kendall of the United States army is the son of a banker. 1'eing allowed a furlough, he goes to a seaside resort near the Tinny pe st and encounters David Barclay, v. ho was his closest friend in colleue. He meets FMith Ferris, niece ot Col. Dickinson, commander of the post, and her mother, guest. of the Barclays. Kendall and Kdith fall in love. Bui Mrs. Ferris, a snob, turns against Kendall as soon as she learns that he is a "common soldier." Kendall arouses th animosity of Lieut. Burkett. Hurkett and Mrs. Ferris conspire to ruin Kendall, netting detectives to look up his record. Kdith. wishing to warn Kendall, asks him, to meet her on a socluded pier at night. While they are talkii.i:. squads of soldiers come searching for two prisoners who have escaped from the guard house. Kendall hurries I-Mith to a storehouse of whic h he, as quartermaster serveatit. has the key, and pushes her inside with instructions to make her escape as soon an he has led the searching parties away. He miraculously escapes being shot, and when sufficient time has e lapsed to allow Kdith to escape he surrenders, lie maintains silence as to his conduct, and thus seems tr corroiwM ate the charge of Lieut. Burkett that he has been planning t rob th. storehouse. The stores are found intact, and no one .believes that Kendall attempted or thought of any robbery. But Burkett persists in accusing Kendall, and he is held for trial. Kdith interferes. She tells iier uncle, the colonel, that it was to save he r that Kendall made his myste rious tlight and then kept silent, 'i he regiment is ordered to Nicaragua to support the president of the stormy republic in putting down an insurrection. The regiment is caught in a tight place and almost annihilated. Lieut. Burkett proves himself a onward in the fighting, hiding behind a tree, and then the men i-efiu-e to obey his orders thereafter. Kendall receives the enc omiums of bis superior otticers. and returns to the United States. Col. Dickinson welcomes Kendall, and consents to bis marriage to Kdith. Kendall is commissioned a lieutenant. But meanwhile Barclay and his father have investigated the Ktnk affair and found Kendall's father innocent. They supply funds for him to reopen the bank, and he resigns from the army to marry Kdith and become a banker. "The Strance Case of Mary I'agv" is also being shown as usual.
