Ali-hawaka. early Sunday morning. Siori lies at St. Joseph's hospital a l Mishawaka with a bullet hole throuirh his abdomen and is not expected to live. Verde was brojuht back to Mishawaka 1 and placed in jail. ; The causes leading to the shootinp have not been determined. Two stories of the affair are told by witnesses. One is that Verde deliberately pulled a kuii on Siori. who was seated at a table, and shot him. Another story I is that Verdo shot through his coat pocket. . Vrrde, with his wife, is said to have ! called at the home of Siori to visit with him. With other visitors they were seated about a tab!e listening to a phonograph. According to one witness, Verde suddenly Hashed his j revolver at Siori. The latter reached j 'over the table and seized the weapon ; and attempted to turn it to the floor. ! j At the F;irn; moment Verde Is said to ! have pulled the trigger. The bullet 1 ' struck Siori In the abdomen and he ; ; fell to the lloor. i Verde and his wife then rushed from the house. Police learned that thev headed for South Bend and no- ! tided the local authorities. Chief! Kuespert, Othcers Richard O'Conneil. ; j Iiver atul Lane got on the trail of j A'erde. They learned that Verde's ' wife, who is Polish, was attempting i i to communicate with a sister in the west end. The officers promoted a ; telephone conversation between Mrs. ( Verde and her sister and got on the j wire. Chief Kuespert understood ; trough of the Polish conversation to learn that Verde planned to leave the j city on a South Shore interurban car anil that he intended boarding it at j Olive st.
