Mrs. Nellie-Davis and son Dwigbt were In Eaton Saturday afternoon. MEDIUM PRICES PAID AT PURE BRED SALE OF WALTER FULGHUM By WILLIAM R. SANBORN Two Giant Buster yearling gilts opened the Walter Fulghum sale : of Big Type Polands on Saturday. Prior to this, however. King Prospect, one of the noted herd sires, had invaded the downtown district in a red truck to be viewed by the passing throng. King Prospect Is about as black as tar, and weighs as much as a box car. : A bell and bellman called attention; to his majesty, and he was much admired; In fact, drew a great crowd at Fifth and Main, where be halted for a time. The Fulghum sale was held under a tent at the farm adjoining Earlham cemetry on the west, and formerly the old country club location. A . lot of people were attracted to the sale, many of whom were curious to sea a fine collection of hogs but had no personal use for them as an investment. The ladies of the Christian church at Centerville were early on the grounds with a real sale day lunch, after the service of which the sale began. Number 1 in the catalog was the first to sell, and Number 45, last to be listed was the last put up. In brief, the sale proceeded just as catalogued in due sequence, this being the first time that this has been known to occur in all our sales experience. First Pair Brings $200. The first pair to show were litter mates, two open gilts of a most respectable clan and belonging to the Giant Buster family. Frank Williams got both of them at $100 each, after some spirited bidding. LIndley Morgan secured a young boar from the same brood, at $53. Miss LaHarpe. the fourth to show, cost Cal Davis $54. and the Black Beauty tempted James Hughes to invest $52. John Dynes seemed to think it was about time he was picking up a pig or two, and when Pawnee Lady ambled in he bid ner up to $52 and got away with it. Later in the sale John saved a dollar by getting his next choice, a spring gilt, at $51. Jones and Pike paid $75 for No 40 and $50 for No. 41, two gilts, of the Big Model family. Frank Williams got one of the same flock at $50. and William Lintner got a gilt of the" same family for $57. The last two put up, both tried sows, cost Dan Kitchell $49 each, and these closed the sale. Various Poland Buyers. Depressing market conditions affected the spirits of the crowd, hogs having been on a continuous decline for days, but there were a number present who knew that there will come & day of reckoning and reaction; that this shortage of sows and feeders must tell later on, and with plenty of cheap corn the hog grower must again have his day. There was a raft of young stuff in the offering, most of which 6old worth twice the money, owing to conditions, and all buyers felt that they had made good investments, judging from remarks made at the ringside. Among the buyers not so far mentioned were: Carl Fort, Charles Linden, Fred Bullerdlck, J. D. Crowe. Charles Stone, who paid $62 for an open gilt; Carl Blose, who got another at $60, and Charles Pawpaw, who paid $62 for the last gilt in that family Elmer Jackson got a young boar, as did Will Brooks, Howard Harter and Herbert King. John Sn&lser bought four gilts at from $40 to $46, all sisters, and Ed Harris got one of the boars at $30. In view of all facts and conditions, and this being Mr. Fulghum'a Initial pure-bred sale, it was a very fair sale. Conniff and Weddle were the auctioneers and Harry Thornburg, of the Union National bank made the. settlements. The average working life of a horse is nine years and 15.000 miles of trav. el. Motor trucks, in many cases, ai;e found to be good after 15 years of service, after having covered from 100.000 to 200.000 miles.
