DARK LEAF MEN ARE UP AGAINST IT; BIG STOCKS, NO MARKET By WILLIAM R. SANBORN. To raise the most expensive crop of tobacco that the growers have ever gathered, and to find no market for It, even at the cost of production. Is the experience of the farmers In the DarkLeaf district of Kentucky and Tennessee. On top of the lack of demand for 1919 leaf will presently come the millions of pounds of the 1920 crop. Little wonder that the dark tobacco farmer Is almost in despair, as indeed toany of them are. Compared with the vast 6tocks on hand dark-leaf may be almost said to be without a market. That conditions will change for the better within a year Is sincerely hoped, but that paying prices can possibly be realized for a long time, now seems out of the
question. It Isn't at all a question of monetary affairs In this country, or of a home demand. Park leaf is principally growir for the foreign market. It has always been an export tobacco. Aside from the tonnage bought by American snuff and plug tobacco manufacturers, about 83 per cent of the annual crop has been exported to Germany, Austria, Denmark, Holland, Spain, Italy, France and England. Why There's No Market. It now develops that he war-bled - countries have but little money to spend for tobacco. Again, England ras been such a liberal buyer that it is said to have an 18 months normal supply on hand, and this Is given color by the fact that a government embargo has been placed on tobacco imports into England, in effect since last February. I Every pound of tobacco arriving in 'if England goes to the king's warehouse. It is released upon payment of duty on the pound, depending on valuation. England forbids the spending of money abroad for tobacco, because of exchange conditions. She permits only the buying of goods needed. Italy wants our tobacco, but hasn't the money to pay for it. Her exchange rate Is too low. Italy offered $25,000,000 in bonds in New York, at GV2 per cent, to finance her tobacco buying. But no one wanted them. A few millions were sent to the tobacco country and some banks bought a few of them to help the situation, but could accomplish little, having so much money devoted to keeping the planters alive. Spain Buys Java Leaf. The fact that Java raises a tobacco that can substitute for much of our dark leaf, and the fact that the war closed her market for about four years, is another factor in the present depression. Spain, which had usually bought 20,000 hogsheads here annually is reported to have purchased a year's r-upply or more in Java, at much lower figures than would let the Kentucky grower out. Java belongs to and Is governed by Holland and it is natural that Holland would buy to assist its own colony. Russia is unable to buy from anyone; Germany, Austria and much of Central Europe is impoverished. All of this explains the plight into which dark tobacco growers were unexpectedly plunged. Four Dark-Leaf Districts. Each of four dark-leaf districts grow a different variety of tobacco, these 'districts coupling 27 counties, 15 in , -Western Kentucky and 12 in Western , rennessee. Much suffering is feared both states during the coming winter. Planters are in debt for groceries, feed and supplies and many of them , also for land, because former high I prices for tobacco led to buying of i land at speculative prices. Bankers have been doing what they could to .keep their customers out of the poor houses. Many are loaned to the limit. The principal dark markets are: Hopklnsville, Paducah and Mayfield, Kentucky, and Clarksville, Tennessee. The "Green River" district is around Owensboro and the "One Sucker" around Bowling Green, Kentucky. May Quit Planting. District meetings have been held and others will be, one in tho form of "DANDERINE" Stops Hair Coming Out; Doubles Its Beauty. A few cents buys "Danderine." a convention of growers during August, and it is possible dark tobac co growing will be suspended in 1921. The sentiment seems to favor this step. In the meanwhile co-operative ownership of the loose leal floors is talked of as a partial relief, so as to control both growing and selling. The bankers, growers and business men are also at work on a large holding corporation to carry the leaf until the planter can afford to let go. The real and lasting remedy lies in the diversification of crops, and this gospel is now being preached with good effect. The troubles pf the dark-leaf farmer have no bearing on the welfare of the burley or cigar leaf planter. These tobaccos are mostly consumed at home. The Theatres WASHINGTON Deep In its pathos, filled with human emotldn. depicting a wonderful love, a story full of sweetness and loyalty, "The Confession," Hal Reid's wonderful stage play, has been made into a Super-feature motion picture at a cost of one hundred and ninety thousand dollars, and is said to be superb artistically and dramatically. Wherever It has been shown the press has been unanimous in Its praise. Reid, who wrote "Human Hearts" and over a hundred other successes, has a trick of bringing tears to the eyes only to be driven away by laughter; there is plenty of excitement and a happy ending. This seems to contain all the elements of a popular success. "The Confession" is playing Tuesday and Wednesday al the Washington. RICHMOND. Five thousand players were' used by William Fox in producing the sensational screen spectacle "Salome," which Is showing at the Richmond for the last time Tuesday. The great dramatic screen pageant was to a large extent a labor of love. Mr. Fox grew absorbed in the wonderful story and Its rich possibilities for film artistry. Unsintingly he drew upon his resources to create a protodrama with out equal In the history of the cinema Some Idea of the expense involved in staging "Salome" may be gained from these two items: Two hundred loads of sand were hauled from the beaches to the streets of the improvised Jerusalem; twenty-five tons of plaster and as many tons of cobblestones were used. A hundred sculptors and mural decorators were kept busy during the erection of the set tings. Much effort was lavished upon securing novel effects. Steam was used to produce hazy effects in certain scenes. Ten aeroplane propellers on stationary pillars helped to produce storm effects. The total cost of the production was more than $1,000,000. MURRETTE. A picture that offers great promise is at the Murrette for the last time Tuesday, is Katherine Mac Donald, the charming screen star and popular favorite in her newest photoplay of love and mystery "The Notorious Miss Lisle." This offering is a dramatization of the well-known novel of that name by Mrs. Baillie Reynolds and it is directed by no less noted personage than James Young. To add to its Importance Miss MacDonald is surrounded by a cast of universal excellence. It is a fascinating subject to conjecture upon as to what could be accomplished by the new branch of surgery in transferring monkey glands. Marshall Xeilan in his latest photoplay "Go And Get It," a First National attraction, which comes to the Murrette theatro, on Wednesday has chosen a probable development as the force in back of the dramatic story which the picture shows. A surgeon has arranged for the body of a murderer who is to be hanged. He transfers the brain of the murderer to the skull of a living ape. The combination of the enormous strength of the ape and the brain See Superfluous Hair Roots Come Right Out (An Entirely New Process) New, different, better than all depilatory and electrical treatments, is the marvelous phelactine process. of the murderer causes a reaction that provides one of the most baffling mysteries ever conceived by an author, and the unraveling of which gives opportunity for a dramatic love story filled with thrills and surprises. In the opinion of surgeons the idea is not beyond the bounds of what may be expected. Means have already been discovered for treating and operating on the brain- Injections into the base of the brain are dally improving the status of lmbecilic children and even grown people. Removal of foreign matters from the brain are so common now as to excite no comment. More and more is being learned of the brain every day and the operation upon whicn tne story of "Go And Get It" is based, may be a matter for accepted science within a few years. WRITER OF STORIES HELD ON CHARGE OF FRAUD BOSTON, Mass., Aug. 10. Charle3 L. Appleton, also known as Lawrence A. Almon, who is alleged by federal authorities to have sent false stories about students at Wellesley, Smith, Mt. The Investigation of Almon's activi ties resulted from the receipt of a number of complaints from the colleges. The first one, officials said, came from Wellesley, after the pub lication in another city of an account of a weird ceremony said to have taken place in connection with tho presentation to the college of Gen. Pershing's helmet and flag and the battle pennant of ex-Emperor William of Germany. The ceremony described did not take place, according to the complaint, nor is anything known at Wellesley regarding the German pen nant. BOONE COUNTY WHEAT YIELD BELOW NORMAL LEBANON, Ind.. Aug. 10. Melon Lice
E. E. RICE, GARDEN SUPERVISOR. It is cheaper to buy spraying materials and fight the bugs on your melon vine than it is to pay a dollar apiece for watermelons. Home grown melons are just as good as the juicy specimens shipped here from Georgia and Florida. Gardeners frequently become discouraged after the bugs strip the leaves from the vines and destroy the crop. The result is the watermelon is scratched off the list. Gardeners should not become discouraged when they see a few bugs on the vines. They are on the vines by the thousands this year. Your patch may be next, for throughout August melon and cucumber plants may be covered with great armies of dark colored plant lice, such as the green melon aphis. The lice cluster on the under side of the leaves, causing the foliage to wilt, curl up, and die. These tiny creatures, usually not more than one-fifteenth of an inch long, originated from females which migrated five or six weeks ago, from weed patches along the borders of the garden. The lice travel rapidly from hill to hill, spreading to all parts of the patch within a few days. They are not so noticeable as the worms and other chewing insects. The lice pierce the leaves with their sharp beaks and suck the juices from the plant. They must be checked immediately. The nicotine spray is the remedy now commonly used. For spraying vine crops It should be applied at the rate of about four ounces of nicotine sulphate to 25 gallons of water. It will stick to the foliage much better and will be more effective if a pound of laundry soap is chipped up and dissolved in the mixture. Where there are only a few hills to be treated, one tablespoonful of the nicotine to one gallon of soap suds will be about the right proportion. The lice stay on the under side of the leaves where they will be in the shade, and it is necessary to turn up the vines to make sure that all parts of tho bottom of the leaf are hit by the spray. letter from Frank N. Wallace, of the state conservation department. In reply to your letter, will say that the Insects that are eating your tomatoes are unquestionably the larvae or caterpillars of the so-called corn ear worm. Doubtless you have had considerable acquaintance with this insect as it is co common in the end3 of the ears of sugar corn. It seems that this insecct also likes to feed on the fruits of tomatoes and that the moths lay their eggs on the leaves of this plant The young caterpillars hatching from these eggs, feed on the tomato leaves for a short time but soon 6how a particular liking for the fruit Since these caterpillars do feed on the leaves, spraying with arsenate of lead, using it at the rate of one and one-half pounds to 50 gallons of water, will protect the fruits if the spray is applied and kept on the plants throughout the growing season; but this control will do little or no good after the caterpillars have hatched and are attacking the fruit, simply because they do not eat a sufficient amount of the surface of the fruit to obtain enough poison that would stick to it, to kill them. I have found that this insect is especially bad where tomato plants are grown very close together and form a mat on the ground. This is because the worms do not like to be exposed to the strong light and when the tomatoes are rank in growth and considerable shade is afforded those tomatoes that are most shaded by the plants suffer the greatest injury. Tha same applies where weeds aro allowed to grow In the tomato patch. Perhaps one of the best methods of controlling this insect is fall or winter plowing. cause the pupae, or the resting stage of the insect, passing the winter in little cells in the soil and when these cells are broken and the pupae exposed to the rigors of winter a large percentage of them will succumb. I might add that the only feasible control for the pest after it begins to attack the tomato fruits is hand picking. The caterpillars can be gathered and either mashed or dropped into a can containing kerosene. Yours very truly, Frank N. Wallace,
