Alexandria Bay, X. Y., Aug. 2S "Am I a candidate for the republican nomination for president? No. I have not the bee. personally. Would I accept the nomination? No citizen has
ever declined it or ever will. I would rather contribute to making the next
session of congress a success, so that my party will deserve and win success In 1 90S, than have the presidency tendered to me on a golden salver." Representative J. G. Cannon of Illinois, speaker of the 3st house, and undoubtedly destined to be speaker of the next, the country's "Uncle Joe" and the choice of hi3 state for the nomination as President Roosevelt's successor, said this with great earnestness. Takes Trip cn Yacht. The speaker gave the Interview sitting aft on the deck of the yacht owned by his friend, Representative Joseph C. Sibley of Pennsylvania. He had come East, as Is his custom, to spend the last two weeks of August with Mr. Sibley and had been putting in most of his time at Mr. Sibley's place on Volcour Bay, Lake Champlain. Mr. Sibley's other guests were Senator Hemenway of Indiana, who is the manager of the candidacy of Vice President Fairbanks; Representatives E. B. Vreeland and George' R. Maltby of New York, who, at the proper time
j probably will be found voting in the
national convention for Governor Hughes, and former Representative L. N. Littauer, whose first choice is President Roosevelt, whether he j
wants it or not. Mr. Sibley himself is a Knox man. Thus, when the yacht arrived at Alexandria Bay, the small party contained a pretty wide assortment of presidential summer preferences.

Frankfort, Ky., Aug. 2S. In a "letter
addressed to Commonwealth Attorney Robert Franklin of this city, chief prosecuting counsel for the state in the Goebel murder cases, Governor Beckham assures that official of his co-operation with him in seeing that William S. Taylor is protected from arrest and allowed to return to the state of Indiana if he will come to the Scott circuit court at Georgetown, this state to testify in the next trial of Caleb Powers, charged with the murder conspiracy cases. The governor declares that he and the commonwealth's attorney can "absolutely insure" Taylor such immunity and a safe return to Indiana. The governor's letter to the commonwealth's attorney reads as follows: "Commonwealth of Kentucky, Executive Department, Frankfort. To Hon. Robert B. Franklin, Commonwealth's Attorney Dear Sir: -In response to your communication of August 15, in reference to the matter of assuring William S. Taylor immunity from arrest in the event of his coming to Kentucky to testify in the case of the Commonwealth vs. Caleb Powers, I wish to say to you that in every possible way I shall co-operate with you in seeing that said Taylor, ft he comes to testify in that case, shall be protected from arrest and allowed to return to Indiana. There is not the slightest question that I, as governor and you, as commonwealth's attorney of the district in which he is indicted, can absolutely insure him such im
munity from arrest and a safe return to Indiana. You may therefore rely implicity upon my aid, if needed to carry out your assurance to him of this immunity. Very respectfully yours, "J. C. W. BECKHAM, "Governor of Kentucky."

Earl Hess, Aeronaut, Has Narrow Escape from Death While Exhibiting.
15,000 WITNESS ACCIDENT.
TRAGIC FATE OF PROF. BALDWIN, JUST TWO YEARS AGO, IS RECALLEDTOOK PLACE AT THE SAME PLACE.
Greenville, O., Aug. 25. With the eyes of 15,000 people on him in the air at a distance of over 400 feet, and a mile" and a half from the starting point, Earl Hes3, who manned one of the big Knabenshue. airships, was precipitated to the ground Tuesday, and it is a miracle that he was not killed. The huge balloon burst at the side and started to the ground at high speed, but the plucky sailor, struggling for his life, in some way managed to turn it around so th.it it formed a parachute and slackened the speed to such an extent that he landed on a commons with only a jarring up. It was his second voyage for the day from the Darke county fairgrounds, where the fair Js now in progress. The only cause for the accident that seems plausible is the fact that, while attempting to light from the first trip, he ran into a tree and it is thought that the bag was wrecked. The balloon bag is now wrecked, and it is not thought that any more ascentions will be made here this week. It is a coincidence that at the fair here two years ago Prof. K. J. Baldwin the aeronaut, was blown to atoms in the presence of thousands by dynamite that he carried to give-an exhibition In midair.

COMPLAIN AGAINSTWEEDS Residents of the East End Crying for Relief.
Residents of the eastern sections of the city are complaining against the large weeds which are allowed to grow on many of the lots. Weed cutting warnings seem to have fallen but lightly upon the ears of many property owners. Although he bas stated several times that ae would soon make an example of some property owner in police court, for not obeying the city ordinance In regard to weed cutting. Street Commissioner Dye has done nothing along this line.
