On Uniting Pork nnd iti l'c n rool. Wc have a lcngtliy essay on tliii nljcct from Mr. J. VT. KIßcM, but have not troon to give it entire, anl therefore present an epitome: The opinion in cx presset! th.it hogt arc2 generally clbcave!; iiot acutely, lut ."uljeet to chronic disorder which nre only ende'd hy the knif? of the

hutchcr. TulrculatC'l tin l ulcerate lj livers anl lung, and congested and lymphatic gland arc found in the i-cmi-vtild hog which fatten it the f.)rcti of the West nnd South, well ai in those which are confined in a ?pcc jut large enough to eat, stand, nnI ilvp in, and comi-clled to breathe the exhalation of concentrated inaiinrci which it is their business to compost and manufacture. The hog is naturally of scrofulous constitution, and his diseased meat l?cin; eaten, is Irouglit into clo.sc contact and intimate conjunction with fluids and solids of the htlrnan body, and thus impart scrofula, showing itself in obstruction", indurations, enlargements, tumors, tubercles, eruptions, ulcers and cancers. Mr. ItalficM thinks the tendency of

the swine to scrofula may be accounted for thus: Life in warm-blooded animals ii sustained by a supply of heat-producing material taken as food, such as oil, lard, fat, or it equivalent in various forms. When more tuch food is taken than is necessary to supply the immediate wants of the system, tlx? srcrplns is stored in the cellular membrane in different parts of the body, ready to bo ued when needed to make up any deficiency of food. The fat, thus dcpoMted, in time becomes rancid, and is then absorbed into the circulation to make room for froh depositee, and if thcre is already supplied to the lungs a sufficient an-.uunt of matter through the food to keep up the necessary combustions, this- fvAty substance remains in the bIr,!V nnpurified, and gives rise to

svrofubus disease in various forms. 7 7 iv hog is particularly liable to this iTiffteu.ty, lceausj his food is mostly sfarcTr, saccharine, and oily, rather than nitr(genoiiM; fat-making rather than flesh-making. Again his habits and mode of life teud to impede the a igorous exercise of the lungs whose nflicc it is to purify the blood. He lives frequently in a very impure atinos?)here, and als bv nlmot eontinnal rooting, excludes a free supply tf nir from the lungs. His filthy habits aho impede the egress of offensive secretions from the skin, and increase a tendency to lymphatic and phlegmatic diseases. Mr. 11. thinks that these peculiarities of swine wore intended to subserve the purpose of rapid propagation of the species; for which swine arc rcmarkabb. During the process of gestation and nursiii', the excess of food goes for the growth of the young, instead of being deposited in the form of fat, thus preventing the difficulties already referred to. He says it has been observed that scrofulous nnd consumptive persons enjoy apparently improved health during pregnancy from this fact. Hence he concludes that the proper way to prevent the supposed delciciious effects of eating pork, is to kill the young porkers for the table before thev arrive at the age when

their food adds to their fat instead of

increasing the general growth. He thinks the superabundant food of one sow, in the .shape of eight or ten pigs, is greater in quantity and better in quality, than in the form of that one sow fatted and overgrown; and hence more profitable. He advises to commence with on sow of the finest breed, pregnant with her first litter, which will be at the time of the commencement of excessive nutrition; to save all the sow pigs and one boar for breeders, and to make roasters of the rest, before the males are old enough to have a rank taste, thus avoiding castration; and to continue thus, until the herd is suftitiently large. In conclusion Mr. U., after adverting to tho superiority of young porkr.s to tho overgrown animals in an at.Vtie point of view, (the little fellows being not without a eeitain style of beauty,) concludes w ith the opinion, that the largo fattened animal is tit only for stearins candles and lard oil, and that is the littlo-pig. fro from disease, fat, fair, rich, tender and delicate, that is fit to bo eaten. Amor. Agriculturist. Sow Turnip. Some fanners ha talked and written against turnips for stock, and justly so, if their own experience were the ted. Cattle or other animals fed almost exclusively on tuinips, for weeks together, will not thrive well. Hut there is no doubt that a moderate feeding of turnips with dry fodder is Ktter than dry feed alone. livery keeper of live stock should raise some turnips. They can s grown at little cot. Kvery one can atthis season find some ground that may be devoted to their culture. The seed may be sown hi any time this month (July). Where ft drill-sower is not at hau l, and ii t rot convenient to harrow or ilig it in, the seed may be sown broadcast upon the surface. A large part of it will generally take root, even if left uncovered. Wo intend to go over our own corn and potatoes, and through the vegetable garden, this li mih, with a dUh of turnip ico-1 an 1

a rake or hoc in hand, and where ever there is a square foot not certain to be needed by plants already growing, the seed will be seatteied, and raked into the surface a little. It will be sown between the rows of the earlier varieties of corn, and that to be cut np for fodder; also among eaily potatoes, between the rows of peas in th garden, etc. in short, wherever a single rtirnip can have room to develop itself, even late in Autumn, there a few seeds will be left the superfluous plants to be removed when they crowd

each other. In this way we hall get a good supply at very little cost. They will probably be stored in the cellar, or in covered heap, at less than 10 cents per bushel. Having seed, we sow the Long White French variety exc'u-ivcly, but almost any variety may be sown up to the close of July the eailier the better for ruta bagas. Amor. Aricultuiist. Sow n Iatch of Iluck wlicnt. There are many fields which from failure of the com, or delay in Spring plowing, arc lying comparatively idle. The grass is nearly run out, and this

tle, dock, snap-dragon and other foul weeds arc disputing for the vacant daces. Although the labors of the present month are pressing, these patches should not be neglectd, especially when there is a prospect that all the grain we can raise this season will bo wanted at good prices. Fvcn if these anticipations should not be realized, a good crop of buckwheat will

greatly help to fill the light bide of

the farm balance sheet. If sown during the first two weeks of the present month (duly) there will be a good chance for it to fill during the cool weather in September. Where there are swale" ordinarily too wet to plow for corn in the Spring, cropping with buckwheat will often be found e good preparation for seed

ing down with Winter rye after the

.Summer crop is harvested. Ibid.

It is easy to ruin, and easy to ave

a young man. One of the leading

brokers of New York had a young

man in his employ. The vast amount of money in his hands was a great

temptation to him. Small sums were

missed day after day; one quarter, then fiftv cents, then one dollar, then two dollars, were missed. He was charged with the peculation. The broker showed him how he could dc

tect tho abstraction of the smallest

sum of money; the young man stam

mered and confessed. Now, said the

broker, I shall not discharge, I shall

not dishonor you. I intend to keep

you and make a man of you. You will be a vagabond if you go along in

this way. Now let me se no more of

this, lie went to his work. He did

not disappoint the confidence, lie did

honor to his employer. And the other

dav he was inducted into one of our

banks in an honorable position, and his employer became his bondsman

the plant feels the whole season, or at
