Physical fitness a must for musical cast
Physical Fitness means a good healthy diet and plenty of exercise to this year’s energetic and talented cast of the Broadway musical classic, “Plain & Fancy.” As they prepared for the sixmonth run of the musical at Amish Acres in Nappanee, an average day, with time out for meals, looked something like this. Running/biking the two and onehalf miles from the cast residence to the rehearsal house, early morning aerobics in the rehearsal house basement, morning rehearsals, dance rehearsals on the side lawn, afternoon rehearsals, running/biking back to the cast residence at Amish Acres for dinner, evening rehearsals in the theatre and late, late evening rings with the sounds of more singing as individual actors prepare for future roles they hope to play. This hard-to-keep-up-with group hails from all over the United States, and was selected at auditions held early in the spring. As well as playing Katie Yoder in the production, Laurie Oppelt serves as aerobics instructor and dance Library Anderson - two cousins who havenothing in common are plunged into a dangerous adventure when they spend a year with their aunt. Sharks And Whales, Albert - information and illustrations. An Ordinary Day, Motyka - the delightful sights and sounds of an ordinary day. The Three Little Pigs, Zemacha new interpretation of the classic tale. Topsy Turvies, Anno-a wordless picture book to stretch the imagination. Sand Dune, Bannan-how sand dunes are formed. Going on an Airplane, RogersMr. Rogers tells young children about traveling by airplane. Under the Lights, Beirnefollow an eleven-year-old girl through the steps to becoming a model. Chameleons, Schnieper-a close look at the lizard. captain for the cast. This tanned, health-conscious young actress was bom in Hawaii, raised in Massachusetts, and just graduated from the Indiana University School of Music. Much preferring walking or biking to riding in cars, Laurie is an avid sports enthusiast, and an able sports participant. Playing opposite Laurie is Paul Russell, a young actor from Pennsylvania, who has been seen on stage in over 45 states. Laurie and Paul play childhood sweethearts in this lighthearted musical story of an Amish family. Together they sing the haunting love duet, “Young and Foolish.” The other romance in “Plain & Fancy” features Dan (actor John Dcslauriers) and Ruth (actress Linda Van Polen). John comes to Nappanee from New York City, where he just completed a national Excedrin commercial. He studied musical theatre at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and will continue his studies in voice and opera at the Manhattan School of Music in the fall. Linda, originally from California, received her MFA in acting in Urbana, Illinois. She has performed at the Sunshine Dinner Theatre, toured with the Nebraska Theatre Caravan and done summer repertory at the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival and the Mule Bam. Linda and John play New Yorkers who come to the Amish settlement to sell a farm which they have inherited, but never seen. As the plot unfolds, the “fancy” New Yorkers are soon intrigued by the customs and life style of the “plain” Amish people. Other actors in the play include Walter Marts from Missouri, Jozef McKesson from Indiana, Dianne Stone from Pennsylvania, Glen Veteto from Texas, Marie Vlasin from Michigan, and Paul and Sarah Friesen-Carper from Goshen. “Plain & Fancy” was directed by Warren Pepperdine of Indiana University at South Bend, and musical direction is by Dennis FriesenCaiper. Playhouse Productions, with the support of the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, produces “Plain & Fancy” at Amish Acres, with Jill Stover as producing director. The musical runs throughout the summer and early fall. Call 773-4188 for ticket information.
