'RUSS SCIENCE STUDENT PLAN NO SCARE'; RULE
STOOPS REVEALS PLAN TO SHARE TOP TEACHERS; TEACHERS RESIST There is no alarm to the security cf America in recent reports that Russia will produce 400,000 scientists in the next five years, according to High School Teacher Dean Rule’s speech at Kiwanas Monday. Though the U. S. will produce only 150,000 scientists in the same time, Russia’s science teaching up to 1953 was “crude” Rule stated. He scoffs at statements of Russian leaders that Russia will spread its “communism” thru the world .vithout war, because Russia will lecome so enormously rich ecoaoimically. Russia may end its big plans vith five million engineers but nothing else, he added. More pay for college teachers, •vas his plea. He said that a college teacher with a bachelors degree jets $2,600 a year and the average IU teacher with a PhD gets $4,700 Rule told of plans for teaching chemistry and physics in Nappaxee high school, which include" trengthening guidance plans and providing laboratory equipment tor each student instead of the old nethod Os group experiments, which often permitted horseplay ;o creep in, he added. High school Principal James O. Weddle interjected that Nappanee ’las 200 r c more students in its xnence classes than Goshen. Nappanee therefore does not lag, he ;aid, in starting students in the xience.s, as recent statements of Dr. Strauss, who gained national lot ice by raising the scare over Russia’s science drive, implied' was rue for the whole U. S. Supt. Osborn added, that when he was at Rolling Prairie a science eacher left school to take a job it Benclix that paid SIOO more a nonth and gave the teacher 12 nontlis work. He added “We haven't been able to keep teachers ntemsted in , teaching chemistry.” W. R. Kendall, former school -uperintendent, said from the floor .hat hundreds of students have been lost to the study of science presumably on account of low pay.) He said he didn’t believe that Dean Rule cared to mention his ©alary but that he (Rule) would be istoniished to learn the average aay of a Nappanee factory worker. Rule staled he gets $4,500 for the school year. LaMar Stoops, school board president, revealed a plan he has that presumably would provide nore teachers for the science studies. His plan is to have a top-ranking teacher- perhaps one day at Nsppanee high school, one day at Bremen, Milford and Wakarusa; to have several schools share the burden of much higher pay. He added that school men resist the idea. Rule said he teaches several studies ar.d that when a teacher teaches the same thing to five classes a day, “he is shot”, exhausted by repetition. George Rose said that is just what engineers and such scientists do in industry; work steadily for the day at their experiments or other work which is necessarily repetitious. Supt. Osborn backed Rule’s conclusions that monotony is mentally exhausting. Nappanee high school offers students high school and college algebra, plane and solid geometry and trigonometry, Weddle stated, in answer to questions about math. Students lake a test for general mathematics in their junior year and, if they need it, finish high school with the general math refresher course; a little geometry, a little algebra and refresher course in arithmetic. High school guests at Kiwanis were Ned Hoover, Lester Deiner, Leßoy Chupp and Frank Boiinger.
Most people spend more (time and energy in going around problems than in trying to salve them.
