BULLDOGS REGISTER CONFERENCE WIN OVER MISHAWAKA FIVE 37-31
Friday evening the Nappanee Bulldogs registered their first conference win of the season when they downed a scrappy Mishawaka team 37 to 31. The Maroons have been having very little success this season and were particularly anxious to repeat their earlier win over the local quintet. The Bulldogs were unable to cope with the hot snipers in the early stages of the game but in the final half they far outclassed the visitors. Lahr led the Mishawaka attack in the first period when he coni nected with a pair of one handed flip shots and a free toss. Pettrotty brought the Mishawaka total to six points when he registered once on a pair of gift shots.. Stump scored the only basket for Nappanee in the period but free throws by Pippen, Copsey and Stump gave the Bulldogs five points and kept them very much in the game. Again in the second period Lahr connected for two more field goals and time he was given plenty of support by the other members of his team. L. Deal connected on two long shots and Hoffman. Pettrotty and Kopsea each scored from the field.'- Pippen kept the Bulldogs in the running with 8 of their 14 points in the quarter. Sponseller collected two field goals and Stouder added another. At the half time intermission the visitors led 20 to 19. The Mishawaka offense bogged down in the last half and it was not until the Bulldogs had the game sewed up that they managed to do any serious scoring. Tobias came to life in the third period and scored a basket and a trio of free throws. Sponseller and Stouder each contributed baskets and Stump added another free toss. In the final period Nappanee picked up a ten. point lead and with two minutes to go Coach Best began removing his first string men. Mishawaka cut the margin to six points as L. Deal conected on a pair of desperate long shots in the waning seconds. Thp Bulldogs won the game on the free throw line, making good on 13 out of 20 attempts. Mishawaka registered 14, to Nappanee 12, field goals, registered only 3 out o’s 12 free throw attempts. The Nappanee seconds won their second conference game by downing the Mishawaka seconds 15 to 12. BULLDOGS FACE DOUBLE DOSE OF REAL TROUBLE IN GAMES THIS WEEK * When the Nappanee Bulldogs go to South Bend Friday night they will be meeting one of the highest ranking teams, in the entire Indiana basketball realm. However when they finish their work on Friday they will be far from having their task completed for the week. On Saturday they will entertain the North Side team of Ft. Wayne and they rate almost as good as the South Benders. The Central Bears recently handed the Ft. Wayne team a sound thrashing in a blind tournament during the holidays. No one suspects Coach Nulf of having his boys throw the game, but most everyone believes he had not tried particularly hard to have his boys in the peak of condition, not caring to wear them down by too much exertion. The Bears have only one mar on their record to date. They lost a one point game to Huntingburg several weeks ago on a road trip. Coach Wooden has been trying to play his boys only enough to win and not wear them out. He. has been using Farner, Ehlers and Martens as sparingly as possible. These boys are all high scorers and get plenty of points when they are given an opportunity to play. The Bulldogs intend to give the Bears plenty of trouble. Coach Best is giving his boys a much deserved rest this week. Since the Goshen game on December 20 the boys have played six games. They won three of these, lost two by one point and lost the other by a wide margin after the regulars became too tired to continue. On Saturday night the Bulldogs will entertain the Fort Wayne North Siders in the local gym. The Nulf men have lost only two games this season. Besides the game to Central they lost to Hammond Tech early in the season. The Bulldogs will not have much time to think about that game, however, until they finish their work on Friday.. The local team, however, looked very good in defeat and stayed in the game all of the way. Sunday the Sturgis Independent team will play the locals in a game here and should be another good game. The Sturgis team is one of the strongest semi-pro teams in Southern Michigan and will furnish plenty of opposition to the locals. Elkhart Eagles will play in the opening game.
