Rural J astir. The place was Waupaca, Wis., and the time was last Friday. A shoemaker, in a fit of absent-mindedness, sold a pair of shoes which had been left with him for repairs. Thereupon the owner of the shoes sued the careless Crispin for their value. The shoeowner's lawyer was Monagan, and the shoemaker's lawyer was Morgan. The trial came on. Tie shoemaker was on the stand, but his answers did not suit Monagan. Did he go to taking exceptions and appealing to the Court and making out a long list of grievances, so that he could frame a motion for appeal and keep the shoemaker and shoeowner in hot water for months to come, as Mr. Scammon or any other city litigant, for instance, would have done? Not at all. He settled the matter in three words carelessly remarking to the shoemaker that he was a liar. The shoemaker thereupon quietly referred the remark to his eounsel, Morgan, for advice. Morgan, instead of cumbering up the case with suits for slander or bbel, acted for his client immediately by knocking Monagan down and pounding him a little. Now, observe the impartial manner in which justice is administered in Waupaca. The Sheriff did not interfere, deciding that he had no jurisdiction. Some of the jury wanted to interfere, bat the rest would not let them, declaring th they were not trying that case. After Morgan and Monagan were satisfied, the Court took official notise of the vi et armis torn affaire had taken, by informing Monaan that it served him right, and orered the case to proceed. At the close of the case, the jury r fused to deliver their verdict until their fees were paid, and, the money not being forthcoming, the foreman walked off with the verdict in his pocket. Why shouldn't he ? Of course such a proceeding would not do in Chicago, for if juries refused to give verdicts here until they got their fees, we should u-'ver have any verdicts. But in Waupaca, where justice is administered on basic principles, such a proceeding was eminently correct. The Waupaca jury was employed to procure a verdict, for which they were to be paid in fees. They were not obliged to deliver the article they had for sale unless the cash was forthcoming, and that
foreman only vindicated the inalienable !
right of Menm and Tuum when he j tIJe vigor ana ouoyancy 01 iieaim, napwalked off with the verdict. The next Pmess and beauty Pure blood is esdav after the trial, Monagan met the sential to sound health and long life. Äo shtSemakpr on th trt- Mewmmm. the ! chronic disease, sores, ulcers, skin erup-

It could not be Morgan, because Morgan was not acting for himself, but for the shoemaker. The shoemaker was the legitimate creditor, and, therefore, Morgan settled the debt by pounding the shoemaker. Up to this point the reader will observe that exact justice has been meted out without any unnecessary legal routine or red tape, and without the tedious delays which characterize the practice of law in the cities. The basis was simple, abstract justice without reference to Coke, Blackstrie, or Lyttelton, or the practice of lawyers in other States. In Waupaca, it is immaterial what has been done to defaulting shoemakers elsewhere. And yet justice is not wholly satisfied. The shoe-owner hasn't got his shoes back, but we have no doubt that Waupaca will find some way of getting them, and the shoemaker owes somebody a beating, although it is not clear to whom he owes it. Most probably Waupaca will decide it is the owner of the shoes who has made the shoemaker all this trouble. To complete this cheerful picture of rural justice in its virgin purity, it only remains for the Court to whale the foreman who walked off with the verdict, and for the foreman to clean oat the County Treats urer for not paying for the veruict. the whole, the Waupaca way of dc things has its virtues. Ic is simple, elementary, and quick, and has no nonsense about it Such a suit in Chicago would have lasted for years, and before it came to a termination would have been so full of declarations, affidavits, rejoinders, surrebutters, and supersedeases, that no one could tell what it was about originally, or whether there was ever a pair of shoes or shoe or a shoemaker in it at all. Chicago Tribune Stnpid Servant Girls. Krickbaum read somewhere that Dio Lewis advised men with a tendency to become bald to have koles punched in the top of their hats. And so when Krickbaum p irchased his new winter hat he had a small sheet-iron plate perforated with large holes and set in the crown. That was on Tuesday. On Wednesday Mrs. Krickbaum got a new hired girl, who saw the hat on the chair in the dining-room, and imagining it to be a patent colander of some new kind, nhe removed it to the kitchen. When Mrs. Krickbaum came down stairs iX noon to see how dinner was getting on, she found the girl straining boiled cabbage through the sheet-iron ventilator in Krickbaum's high hat, and swearing in the Ballybuhdeen dialect because the holes were so big and the colander no limber. That night when Krickbaum wanted to start for the lodge he bag an to hunt for his hat, while Mrs. Krickbaum sat still and trembling. But when he became exasperated and commenced to pick np the chairs and jam them down hard so as to relieve his feelings, she began to cry, and relieved the horrible truth to him. It may have been done in quicker time, but we doubt it. We say that there may have been in former ages some hired girl who packed her trunk and pelted down-stairs, and was hustled into the street quicker than Mrs. Krickbaum's hired girl when Krickbaum began to expostulate with her, but the fact has not been proved. He wears an imperforated hat now, and will probably be entirely bald by Xew Years. Heat and Disease, During the reheating of the furnaces of an iron establishment in England, says the British Journal of Science, the men worked when the thermometer, placed so as not to be influenced by ..e radiation of heat from the open , marked 120 degrees. In the B -a er pita, the men continue a kind of labor, requiring great muscular effort, at 140 degrees. In some of the operations of glass-making, the ordinary summer
working temperature is considerably over 100, and the radiant heat to which the workmen are subjected far exceeds 212 decrees. In a Turkish bath, the

This dries them into a paste, which is to be packed in close can and sealed. When required for use, the paste can be dissolved in water, and beaten to a foam like fresh eggs. It is said that eggs can be preserved for years in this way, and retain their flavor. Tbe tborougb course of treatment referred to and recommended by Dr. fierce consists in the use of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy with Dr. Pierce's Nasal Douche, wbich is the only means by which tbe fluid can be carried h gh up and applied to all parts of the nasal passages and the chambers connected there witb iu whicb ulcers exist, and from which the d:scbarge proceeds. In addition to this thorough application of the Remedy, which should always be used warm, Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery should be taken earnestly as constitutional treatment, witbout which few cases can be cured, as tbe disease is always constitutional and must be treated accordingly. This treatment has no unpleasant features about it, and has the advantage of never driving tbe disease to tbe lungs, as there is danger of doing by tbe use of strong, irritating snuff ' of poisonous solution.
