LATEST MOVEMENTS IN INDUSTRIAL CENTERS,
NEW YORK LETTER. New York. Oct. 3. The president's speech at St. Louis yesterday gave the market a shock, particularly for tho Harrlman and Hill shares. The first prices of Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Great Northern and Northern Pacific wero about a point lower than yesterday's final sales. The stocks la which Harriman and Hill are the larsrest holders seemed to be affected more than any of tho other shares. The beard, however, overplayed themselves as usual. The same old tactics were pursued, get the entire professional crowd short of the market and then bid up on them. After tho early weakness. Copper, Smelters. Union and St. Paul were bid up two joints without meeting any opposition to speak or. i. ne only period that tho market was exception ally weak was when call loans were marked up to 8 per cent, but the City National Lank soon relieved the stringency by offering large loans at 6 per cent and all that was desired at ( Vs. It was said In the street that the Morgan house was large sellers of Steel common and preferred. There seemed to be constant liquidation going on in these shares. The common stock reached a new low level on the present break but reacted to the opening figures. Tho same old antiquated story wu brought out to give the cause for the advance in Brooklyn Rapid Transit. Once again It is to be placed upon a 4 per cent basis. Thla is getting to be a huge Joke. It has been worked off and on for the past three years. Tho market as a whole closed strong and buoyant with all the lost ground recovered. HEW YORK STOCK MARKET

CHICAGO LETTER. Chicago, Oct. 3. Wheat scored an advance of over a cent a bushel. Tho December sold at 101, closing strong at about the highest price of the day; May touched 107, closing at 107. The foreign situation is becoming more alarming. Liverpool cables were strong and higher; Berlin showed an additional advance evqlvalent to about a cent a - bushel and London was fully a penny higher. Drouth in India and disappointing crop returns from Australia were additional bull factors which gave impetus to tho advance. The market was bid up very easily as there is quite an extended short interest outstanding. Receipts in the northwest were considerably larger than a year ago. The chief bull influence, however, wu.3 the excellent cash demand. New York reported the acceptance of twenty loads of wheat for export. Minneapolis also sold a large block of durum wheat and houses with southwestern connections reported liberal sales to exporters. Tliis cash demand must ultimately rfsult in a higher range of prices for the speculative market. CORN Ruled lower early in the scs(Sion but later rallied to about the opening figures. The Cincinnati Price Current's weoliiv review of crop conditions caused the early weakness. This journal is Quoted as follows: "Week favorable for corn. Damage from frost unimportant; little are now liable to damage. Outlook assuring." Receipts of corn not as largo as estimated. Crop news less unfavorable. The market closed steady to ilrm. OATS Only a half cent range with trade confined almost wholly to the professional element. The market closed dull and uninteresting. Anaconda output in present fiscal year expected to be about half that of last year. I think the liquidation is over and stocks a buy every time the bears make a drive at thera. Expected call money will continue about present level until divided disbursements have been distributed. There ia a big short Interest; there is good buying by good people. Look for a rise of 5 to 10 points in this market. Copper stocks were weak on the unsatisfactory market for the metal which also affected the Paris bourse unfavorably. American Bridge company booked 31,000 ton3 of new business last month as against 62,000 in corresponding month last year. William Rockefeller's interview helped St. Paul in the late trading after early in the day it looked bad and everybody sold it. Logan & Bryan It is hardly time to predict a sustained upward movement but it would seem that the standard issues should rally somewhat further especially if the shorts are squeezed in over-sold issues. The president's speech had very little influence because it was discounted. The Anaconda dividend was better than some people expected. On the whole the news is not bad and the market ought to do somewhat better but people should select weak spots to purchase and take quick profits. Close market observers contend that some of the leading stocks are in a position marketwlse entirely similar to St. Paul. The extensive rise in Canadian Pacific on Monday was admittedly of an exceptional nature, but the demonstration in St. Paul affords conclusive evidence that the heavy short interest in the market Is vulnerable and will take to cover any unfavorable developments. Town Topics. The rally may extend some further on short coverings but it is evident that the important interests are not Inclined to make any campaign against the short interest at the moment. We would adopt the policy of selling the industrials and particularly the metal shares on all rallies and buying the best rails for turns on the bear drives. Steel Plant Sold. New Haven The bankruptcy proceedings of the National Steel and Wire company have been brought to a close by the purchase of the plant In this city for $650,000. It is said that agents of tho U. S. Steel corproatlon have been in this city for some days negotiating with the receiver. The price was considered nominal. The concern was capitalized at $5,000,000 and had assets of about $1,000,000 and liabilities of $3,000,000. Attorney General Jackson today applied to Justice Ford of the supreme court for permission to commence an action against the Postal and Western Union companies. The attorney gen eral asks permission to bring suit in the name of the people against those companies for a Judgment vacating the charters and annulling the existence of both corporation's. He alleges that the companies have entered into contracts, agreements and enforced a tariff of rates, charges, etc. for messages etc. in the state of N. Y. and transmitted therefrom to points In the U. S. and elsewhere. At a meeting of representatives of Toledo, St. Louis and Western Railways and Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway companies yesterday, the Chicago and Alton deal was definitely closed, the Rock Island interests delivered to the Clover Leaf representa tives 4S.S00 preferred shares and 144,200 shares of common stock of Alton and received in exchange therefrom collat teral trust notes of Toledo, St. Louis and Western road at the rate of par for preferred stock and 35 for common stock. Directors of Rock Island meet this afternoon and will turn the phys ical control of Chicago and Alton com pany over to the new controlling in terests. The condition of the security list at this time reflects an almost entire absence of speculative effort particularly on the part of the public. There is certainly no evidence of support from larerer financial or banking Interests and the market has been allowed to drift without leadership Into a position where almost complete liquidation of active speculative accounts has taken place. Within the next sixty days we shall pass through a period of the greatest demand for incident to the season, and we shall also have before us the meeting of Congress and the further effects of growing conservatism in business circles. We do exdL'Ct a marked increase in the value of money or supplies of funds being less than re quired for operations In the security market. We anticipate in the near future a period of steadiness In stock market values. Sest Dish of All. "At a tea," said a Washington woman, "the late Julia Magruder told us a story about a little girl whom she once took out to luncheon. At the luncheon's end Miss Magruder handed her -waiter a ten dollar bill, and the man brought back on a plate a gTeat mound of greenbacks and silver. The little girl looked at the huge mound of change longingly. It j-ou pleasg. Miss Magruder,' she said, Til tare a plata of that, too."
