Pastor of the St. John’s Lutheran Church of; Union Township

The first petition of the Lord’s Prayer: “Hallowed be Thy Name.” As a rule a rjame is used only to designate or distinguish one person from anoiher. At times, however a deeper ineaning is connected with a name. We all know who was called “the Father of our country”, and whyt Likewise who was called “Honest Abe”, and why. Those names are not merely empty sounds, but show character and quality. God’s names are always descriptive, showing us truly who and w r hat He is. Indeed, the name of God is God lilimself, as He revealed tftmselfj in His Word. All Scripture is a continuous praise of God, but in Jesus we have the clearest revelation of God’s name. It is and renis ins holy. “But we pray in this petition that it may be holy among us also.” We should treat, kjeep, and regard it as holy and approach it with reverence and awe. We can not make God’s name hoiy, but just the reverse, it should make us holy, that is, open our eyes of understanding to the beauties of holiness. How is this done? We hallow God’s name “when the Word of* God is taught in its truth and purity and we, as the children of God, lead a holy life according to it.” Purity of doctrine and holiness of life go hand in hand, and thus God’s name is hallowed. “But he that teaches and lives otherwise than God’s Word teaches, profanes the name of God among us.” Why do so many speak slightingly of the Bible ? Because they do not believe it to be God’s Word? And why do so many disregard the injunctions of the Bible? Again, because they do not believe it to be God’s Word. False doctrine and ungodly life go hand in hand, and thereby God’s name is profaned, made unholy. Let us hallow God’s name in our our homes, and in our uaily persohad life. > Sunday School at 10:00, service at 10:45 a.m.
