Former JPO staffer tracks Hillary news NEW YORK—A former JPO editor, Gregg Birnbaum, has created a website that tracks what Sen. Hillary Clinton, DN.Y., is doing. Birnbaum, who worked in the late '80s and early '90s in Indianapolis for the Post & Opinion and covered state government for the South Bend Tribune, is the political editor for the New York Post. He has been quoted as saying he is neither for nor against Senator Clinton - just interested in keeping people up to date about her as a national political figure.

City group offers unique conference

Ways to make places of worship fit congregants' needs will be the focus of a conference in Indianapolis Nov. 3-4. The two-day workshop at Eagle Church in Zionsville - which organizers say is the first of its kind - has been in the making for three years tlirough the efforts of the Indianapolis Center for Congregations collaborating with area synagogues and churches. Rabbi Aaron Spiegel, a Center staffer, says the participants here have explored how space, mission, and programming work together in the area of congregational building, design, planning, and fundraising. "Congregations are faced with a variety of issues regarding facilities," Spiegel says. "The conference will feature speakers and presentations by national leaders that will inform and empower congregations on how to handle challenges that include making a congregation a place of hospitality; what are the best ways to work with an architect; specific do's and don't's during a construction phase, and raising money for a building project." Several workshops are meant to aid synagogues toward these goals. Ron Wolfson, from the University of Judaism and Synagogue 2000, returns to Indianapolis to present "Creating Space That is

Both Welcoming and Sacred." Richard Vosko, an internationally known architect of sacred spaces, will present "Imagine This: A Virtual Tour of the Ideal Jewish Place of Worship." Other presenters include a seasoned photographer of sacred spaces, Micah Marty; Robert Jaeger, executive director of the Philadelphia-based Partners for Sacred Places, and Kevin Ford, chief visionary officer of the consulting organization TAG, offering strategic planning for congregations across the country. While developed for Indiana congregations, word of the conference has drawn wide attention and participation. Temple Israel, of Omaha, is sending a team to Indianapolis. That congregation is setting out on a major redesign of its synagogue

and felt the conference was just what they needed to begin their process, Spiegel says. Beth Shalom Synagogue, from Baton Rouge, La., is sending participants who hope to transform tragedy into joy. Beth Shalom was damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Its building sits as an empty shell. Its members see the conference as their first step at rebuilding their synagogue transformed and renewed. All Indiana synagogues are welcome to attend any parts of the conference. Registration for the entire conference is $45 per person, including meals with discounts for teams of five or more. For more information or to register go to the Center's website, www.centerforcong regations.org, or call 317-237-7799.
