Seven from Indy enter Maccabi
Fire damages Simon home
Seven young athletes will represent the Indianapolis JCC at the 16th annual jewish Community Centers Maccabi games in Charlotte, N.C., from Aug. 9 through the 14th. The young people are Alissa Cohen, Ben Kravitz, Eugene Pecar and Aaron Pitzele, all in tennis; bowler Scott Fishman, Ben Japha in raquetball and Zack Thompson in golf. Sports director Rod Hofts and Team Director Linda Dunn will accompany the athletes. Nearly 1,000 athletes will compete in the games in Charlotte, the smallest community so far to host the games. More than 3,000 athletes will com-
pete in the JCC Maccabi Games in Detroit from Aug. 16-23, the largest games ever, with 20,000 people expected to attend. This year's games are part of the celebration of Israel's 50th anniversary. Along with competing in sports, the athletes in Charlotte will demonstrate fzedflfaj/i(charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) by participating in projects to help the community. The JCC Maccabi Games are governed by partner organizations, the Maccabi World Union, Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel, Maccabi Canada and JCC Association of North America, the managing partner.

Globetrotter vets share skills
Two former members of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team will help teach and inspire JCC youngsters this week at a basketball camp that will include seven coaches and has attracted 50 participants, says Center Sports Director Rod Hofts. Former Globetrotters
Sterling "Smooth" Forbes and Kelvin "Special K" Hildreth will show the skills that have made the Globetrotters legendary in the world of sports. It's the pair's second visit this year. They came in March for a season -ending basketball program that drew an audience of close to 400 parents and children.
Genealogy buffs to hear librarian

Curt Witcher, manager of the historical genealogy department of the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, will address the Jewish Genealogical Society of Indiana at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation.
Jim Borman, founder of the society, said the library at Fort Wayne is known as one of the best resources for genealogical research outside of Salt Lake City, where the Mormon church established the nation's best-known repository of genealogical data.

Austrian scholar to speak at IHC
An Austrian scholar, Gerhard Bodendorfer of the University of Salzburg, will lecture on Jewish-Christian dialogue at 7 p.m. Thursday,
Aug. 9, at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation. Bodendorfer is associate professor of Old Testament at his university and is president of the Austrian Coordinating Committee forChristian-Jew-ish Cooperation. The committee's work is based on the experience of anti-Judaism in the past, particularly concerning the Holocaust. He will lecture on "Beyond Tolerance: Jewish-Christian Dialogue in the Next Millennium."
