Rosh Hashanah glossary
Akedah (lit. "binding"), e biblical account of how braham met the test of loyalty when asked by God to offer Isaac as a sacrifice. A1 Het (lit. "for the sin"). A series of confessions alphabetically arranged, specifying sins of thought or deed, for which God's forgiveness is asked on Yom Kippur. Amidah (lit. "standing"). The prayers silently recited by the congregation in astanding position. Avinu Malkenu (lit. “Our Father Our King"). A litany of brief supplications, each of which begins with the words: "Our Father, Our King." Avodah (lit. “service"). The service of the prescribed sacrificial offerings brought into the Temple. In the Yom Kippur liturgy the word designates that part of the service which recalls the rites anciently conducted in the Temple on the Day of Atonement. Haftarahf/if. "conclusion"). A selection from the Books of the Prophets read at the conclusion of the Torah reading on Sabbaths, holidays, and fast days. Havdalahdit. "division "or "distinction"). A prayer and ritual which mark the end of a Sabbath or Festival day and the entering of an ordinary day or weekday. Kaddish (lit. "sanctification"). The prayer which marks the end of a unit of service and which is also recited as a mourner's prayer. Kavanah (lit. "intention"). Sincere devotion in prayer. Kedushah (lit. "sanctification”). A doxology, recited during the repetition of the Amidah, which includes the "Thrice Holy" (Kadosh, Kadosh, kadosh) response. Kiddush (lit. "sanctification"). Aprayerover wine, recited on Sabbath eve
