Sports Scene Great, growing grid corps
By SHEL WALLMAN Two quarterbacks with NFL aspirations, a frontline brimming with pro potential and a cagy veteran corps of senior linebackers lead our
16th annual edition of the P&O's Jewish Football AllAmerica Team for 1993. We have six holdovers from our 1992 club, the same number as last year, while 12 seniors will graduate, three fewer than in 1992. The remaining nucleus of 12 should form the core of next year's team with senior QB Danny Barnett of Illinois State expected to be at the helm. ■ All four NCAA divisions are represented with Div. 1AA leading the way with nine players, followed by Div. I-A with seven, then Div. Ill with five and closing with Div. II with just three. There are five Jewish players active in the NFL, and at least two of our seniors can expect to be d rafted, while two others will likely try to gain
entry into the NFL as free agents. Now, let's meet our team. The Offense Quarterbacks: (Sr) Perry Klein—CW Post College-6:4, 205 from Malibu, CA. The Offense By now, most football fans are familiar with the sage of QB Perry Klein who stood up at Cal Berkeley after three years of sitting down, transferred to CW Post College on Long Island and rewrote the record books, including four NCAA Div. II records—3,757 regular season yards passing, 4,025 regular season yards in total offense, 614 single-game yards passing and 623 singlegame yards total yardage. The Pioneers went 10-1, including a post-season win, while Perry's a-m-a-z-i-n-g stats read: 248 /407,60 percent completion rate and 3.757 yards, with 38 TD's and 18 interceptions, #1 in Div. II for total offense, 405.2 yards per game. Perry was named an EC AC Div. II All-Star, 1stteam, was Sports Illustrated's Div. II Player of the Year and expects to be selected in the NFL Draft. Perry's spectacular season almost overshadowed an-
otherQBwith NFL hopes who makes our team as a running back. Jay Fiedler, following his 1992 Ivy League Player of the Year season, was confronted with a new cadre of receivers who had to learn the routes and hold the spirals. After they did. Jay led the Big Green to five straight wins and a 7-3 season. Jay went 160/321 for 2,542 yards, a 15.9 yard average, 20 TD's and 19 interceptions fora 125.04 percent efficiency rating. He also rushed for 143 yards in 92 carries and six more TD's. Jay was ranked #9 in NCAA Div. I-AA for total offense and was named AllIvy, Ist-team. He holds 13 Dartmouth passing and offensive records, two Ivy League marks and was chosen to compete in the East-West Shrine Games on January 15. Jay hopes to be selected in the NFL Draft. Matt Friedman (P) keyed the Plymouth State (6-3) attack with 249 carries for 1221 yards, 126.2 yards per game, ranking him #23 in Div. HI for that category, and 8 TD's. He also captured 14 passes for another 170 yards. Matt was named All-Freedom Conference, Ist-team and All-ECAC, Div. Ill, New England, Istteam. The Ivy League decided to allow freshmen to play this year, and Cornell's (4-6) Chad Levitt couldn't be happier. He responded with 88 carries (#2 on the team) in nine games for 493 yards (#2), a 5.4 per carry average, and 6TD's (#1), while gaining 64 more yards on two receptions. Now, Chad turns his attention to his second love, wrestling. Our tight end, Scott Slutzker, is quick, fast, can block and catch and it's not surprising that the soph won the starting job at Iowa (6-5). He accounted for 29 receptions (#2) for 307 yards (#3), a 10.6 yard average with 2 TD's (#1 tie). Scott was named All

Big-10, honorable mention. If you like your football short but sweet, consider Kevin Rubin's (P) season. Lehigh's (7-4) senior flanker corralled 36 passes (#3) for565 yards (#2), a 15.7 yard average (#2) with 4 TD's (#2). Pretty good stats but consider that injuries caused Kevin to miss six starts and four full games for the Engineers. Our frontline is led by Zev Lumelski, a junior OT who keyed the line for the powerful 'Canes of Miami. His linemates include OG Mark Koenig who helped open the holes for Marshall Faulks at San Diego State; Matt Bloom, a junior OT at Pitt who is strong and quick for his size and could have the NFL in his future; Erik Greenstein, only a redshirt frosh at Maryland, is quick, strong, pulls and blocks and started the final three games for the Terps; and senior OG Tom Stone who, following pre-season arthroscopic knee surgery, finally experienced a healthy season and was named Drake's (8-2) co-offensive player of the year Our place kicker, Penn (100) senior Marc Horowitz, was perfect with 32/32 PAT's and 11 (an Ivy season record) of 15 in FG's to beat out both Eric Abrams of Stanford, last year's PK'er, and Gilad Landau of Grambling State, who was named a GTE Academic All-America, Ist-team, with a 3.80 GPA in Pre Med/ Business. The Defense Our three-man frontline includes junior Ethan Jeros of Continued on page 15
