Dayan and Hussein both plead for negotiations Mandela leas than enchanting on Jewish Issues
NEW YORK — Yael Dayan and Faisal Husseini, under the headline "Our fathers fought each other courageously," combined to write an op-ed piece in last Friday's New York Times calling for negotiations with the PLO for a two-state
solution.
"Forty-two years after our fathers fought a war, we have concluded that territonal compromise and mutual recognition are not naive dreams. They offer the sole hope for the survival of our peoples, for the sake of our children, we will work together until that hope becomes a reality." The article added that "While some Palestinian factions probably will perpt tuate more violence in the territories, the world rr.uct noi forget that a sea change has taken place among most intifada and PLO leaders as well as ordinary Palestinians in the last two years. They are not out to destroy Israel but to live side by side with it. "The U.S. Government must take cognizance of these facts. When the U.S. decided to talk with the PLO, it strengthened moderates on both sides. By suspending that dialogue now, the Government is handing a victory to the Palestinian beach raiders and the extremists who control the Israeli Government. The U.S. should move swiftly to renew contacts with the PLO and press for negotiations that will lead to a solution that satisfies the national aspirations of both peoples." Yael Dayan, a member of the Israel Labor Party's Central Committee. Faisal Husseini leads the West Bank
Palestinians.
Abbas is ready to accept censure from boss Arafat NEW YORK — In news accounts from both Beirut and Baghdad, Abul Abbas is said to be losing his protection within the PLO and could be censured, thus permitting Yasir Arafat to lift himself from the hole in which he been lodged since the abortive seaborne attempt on May 20
on Israel's heavily congested beaches.
In fact, Abbas himself stated in Baghdad that he is prepared to accept censure by the PLO, of which he is an important member. The Beirut account stated that Abbas was losing ground in a struggle for control of his group to rivals who say they will follow the less militant
guidelines of the PLO.
Jewish Senator a cinch to win Minnesota seat MINNEAPOLIS — A Jew will be representing Minnesota in the Senate regardless of who wins the election as Paul Wellstone was nominated by DFL at its convention to challenge Rudy Boschwitz for his seat. The American Jewish World said this makes Minnesota as one of the few states in history to have two Jews as leading candidates for
the senatorial position.
In an editorial, the Jewish World said, "it will be interesting to track how Minnesota's Jewish voters respond to the race. Boschwitz, the popular Republican with the massive war chest, has an almost 'rabbinical' status in the U.S. Senate. Israeli and Jewish organizations know they have a staunch supporter and accessible ear with Boschwitz, and many of the Jewish big guns have lined up in support" of him. "Wellstone, noted for his powerful oratory skills, will have to make a lot of speeches to convince the Jewish electorate that this former co-chair of Jesse Jackson's Minnesota presidential campaign shares
their values."
Hardball politics the Israeli way
TEL AVIV — Politics in Israel can be hardball as was indicated when billboard ads featuring a magazine cover depicting a prominent political candidate as a prostitute were banned. The portrait appeared on the cover of the monthly magazine Monitin,
NEW YORK — The best that can be said from a Jewish standpoint for the triumphant visit of Nelson Mandela to America is, with a sigh of relief, that it is over. While leaders of the American Jewish community made a special trip to visit the ANC vice president in Geneva to iron out differences and obtain a dear understanding, yet it was impossible for Jewish leaders to accept his statement that he considered Arafat "a comrade in arms" and his defense of the PLO leader, Moammar Gadhafi, and even Cuba's Fidel Castro who he said "support our struggle to the hilt." When questioned that it suggested "a certain degree of amorality" to ignore a leader's human rights violations simply because that leader supports the African National Congress, Mandela stuck to his position, alibiing that black South Africans fighting for freedom "have no time to be looking into the internal affairs of other countries." At the meeting in Geneva with the American Jewish leaders who made the trip
STABBED IN THE BACK — If you look closely you'll see the blood, which has already been mostly wiped off, still streaming off the back of 12-year-old Iden Mizrahi as the blade has not as yet been pulled out. The handle is wrapped in cloth in order not to destroy any finger prints. He was stabbed by a woman at a bus stop straddling East Talpiot and the adjacent Arab village of Sur Bahir. He was rushed to Hadassah University Hospital in Ein Kerem where the knife was removed. The wound was not deep. Eden was with a friend, Nir Avrahami, who witnessed the stabbing and told police the woman, about 25 years old, ran across the street into Sur Bahir. Several hundred enraged residents of East Talpiot attempted to storm Sur Bahir in revenge at midnight, but were stopped by police who were prepared for just such an operation. Correction
there to confer with him, Mandela expressed regrets if statements he made in Cairo and Lusaka, Zambia, regarding Arafat and Gadhafi led to any misunderstandings in the Jewish community. He also expressed a wish to visit Israel. At the reception for Mandela at Riverside Church Thursday morning Rabbi Alexander Schindler delivered the invocation while Cantor E'len Stettner Math chanted a psalm in Hebrew. Former Mayor Ed Koch of New York City, told a TV news program audience, "I would not have tendered Mandela the multi-million dollar reception that Mayor Dinkins did,” in reply to a question. "When Anatoly Schransky came to New York, and I consider him just as much a hero as Mandela for his fight for freedoms in the Soviet Union, I gave Schransky the key to the city and invited him to Grade Mansion. That’s what I would have done for Mandela. Incidentally, Schransky declined the invitation to Grade Mansion."
Arafat slighted by U.S. — Friedman NEW YORK — In an analysis of the current predicament of Yasir Arafat in Sunday's edition of the New York Times, Thomas Friedman, who heads that paper's Washington bureau, pointed to a fault in the U.S. handling of the dialogue with the PLO. "The U.S. wanted Mr. Arafat to behave like a statesman," Friedman wrote, "but wasn't ready to give him the legitimate status of a statesman. Washington did not invite him for a talk but confined the dialogue to bland discussions between the U.S. Ambassador to a distant North African capital — Tunis — and junior PLO offidals." Friedman concluded that "While President Bush has left open the door to renewing the dialogue. White House officials are not holding their breath."
