Former refusniks settling in as mobilization looms
By GISELA WEISZ 255 5019 FREEDOM RINGS: Welcome to Alexander and Galina Pevzner and their daughter Yelena. The young family arrived recently from the Soviet
Union to be with Alexander's (Sasha) parents. Lev and Yelena Pevzner. The elder Pevzners have lived in Indianapolis for the past eight years, during which time the younger Pevzner family endured the dissonant tribulations of refuseniks in the Soviet Union. Shortly after their arrival, Alexander Pevzner publicly thanked in the State Office Building those who helped him, mainly Sen. Richard G. Lugar and his aide, Keith L. Luse, who have worked diligently for the family's emigration. On Dec. 9 — when Mikhail Gorbachev will be visiting our nation's capital — a large number of Indianapolis citi-

The trip is sponsored and partially financed by The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis. 200 students of the Academy, in his greetings to the assembled 200 grandparents and guests Hasten said: "We want our children to feel good about their Judaism, about their religion. We want Jewish children here to feel that kinship with all the Jews anywhere in the world, whether it is in a synagogue in Moscow, or whether it is in Argentina, or Tel Aviv, or Jerusalem—we want them to feel a kinship with the other Jews... (that) they could sit in a synagogue and feel comfortable there...to be able to pick up a siddur or a humash and understand... and be able to participate in prayers... in services...to be able to say a kaddish and do it without any problems, without feeling inabilities, or even feeling any nervousness!" Along with the teachers, students and guests, over 450 people were served a traditional Thanksgiving dinner in the HAI's auditorium on Nov. 20.
