'Red' Is Pale
It would seem like the new Gene Wilder film The Woman In Red should be a smash hit, hilarious I comedy, es - pecially with its talented cast of Charles Grodin, Joseph Bologna, Gilda Rad n e r a n - ' chored by wild Epstein man Gene Wilder. Unfortunately The Woman In Red is a gross disappointment, not living up to its expectations at all. That isn’t to say it doesn’t have its funny moments but they are too few and far between. It’s a shame.
Gene Wilder wrote the screenplay or actually translated it from a previous French film farce. Something was certainly lost in the translation. Wilder also directed this film besides starring in the leading role. Perhaps he had too many hats to wear and thus none of his functions were done exceedingly well. And Gilda Radnor's off the wall comedy is wasted in a role that demands nothing of her. She portrays an unattractive matronly co-worker of Wilder which is certainly off-beat casting. But her part is too small, like a token appearance to a relative or livein girl friend. The meat of the film belongs to the male quartet of Charles
Grodin, Joseph Bologna, Michael Huddleston and Gene Wilder. The most entertaining parts are when these four are on the screen. The basic premise of this film is that infidelity is great. Everyone should do it. The film advocates cheating and revels in its glory. In fact loyalty to one’s spouse is the exception not the rule. This philosophy is hard to swallow even in this hair-brain plot. To those who are true to their spouses this movie is an insult And I think this is where The Woman In Red completely misses the point. Not everyone enjoys or even considers adultery. The title role belongs to bounteous, beautiful Kelly Le Brock who could create problems in any household, except when she talks. But her body speaks for her. Kelly’s acting ability has been compared to that of Pia Zadora and Kelly lost. The most talented woman in this film is Judith Ivey. She is terrific as Wilder’s wife. One wonders why he would even think twice of cheating on her. Oh well, everyone has their own fantasies to live. The Woman In Red has an attribute of just when you might be falling off to sleep up jumps a new surprise to awaken interest. The interest wanes quickly and the yawns cannot be stifled. All in all The Woman In Red is shockingly dull.
