Rabbi Would Involve Natl Bodies In Patrilineal Descent Dispute

MOBILE, Ala. - Rabbi Steven L. Jacobs said he finds “it somewhat ironic” that major American Jewish organizations did not respond to the “Open Letter to American Reform Jews” challenging the patrilineal descent vote of the Reform rabbinate. WRITING IN his bulletin, the spiritual leader of the Springhill Avenue Temple, reprinted the letter from the Committee for the Maintenance of Jewish Standards, Merckaz Harabonim — United Orthodox Rabbinate, which stated that the resolution “will place a cloud over the Jewish status of everyone identified with the Reform movement.” The letter appeared in The New York

Times of June 21, following passage of the patrilineal descent resolution by the Central Conference of American Rabbis on March 15. The letter asserted that the Reform action “destroys Jewish unity” and “may well affect adversely the campaigns for the United Jewish Appeal, Federation, Israel Bonds and others.” Rabbi Jacobs said “this historic resolution (patrilineal descent) is the solution to the complex phenomenon of intermarriage and the subsequent status of those families, adults and children alike”. . .and “is the most realistic attempt to address this item in many years.” HE NOTED that the Re-

WIZO Is Apprehensive As Hadassah Expands

By IRWIN POLLOCK MONTREAL (P-O) - Canadian Hadassah-WIZO has reacted with concern and apprehension to the announcement by Hadassah that it will be seeking to increase its membership outside the United States. THE UNPRECEDENTED decision was approved at Hadassah’s 69th annual convention in Washington. It reversed a long-standing agreement between Hadassah and the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO) that the former would restrict its membership and fundraising drives to the United States while WIZO would do likewise in all other countries. (WIZO is active in 30 countries. In Canada the organization is known as Hadassah-WIZO and has 17,000 members.) Bernice Tannenbaum, national chairman of the Hadassah Medical Relief Organization and immediate past president of Hadassah, stated after the American convention that Canada is a likely market for Hadassah's plans for expansion. MIRIAL SMALL, national president of Canadian Ha-dassah-WIZO, said the American decision could be counterproductive. “We have always maintained a very healthy relationship with American Hadassah, with an ongoing ex-

change of ideas and speakers. There would be real confusion since not only do we share in part the same name but because our work is so similar,” she stated. She added that Canadian Hadassah-WIZO has never strayed into Hadassah's American territory. “WE PROMISED American Hadassah three years ago that we would not allow our women who winter in the southern part of the United States to raise funds there. We have kept that promise scrupulously, even going so far as to stop a group of our Montreal women who wanted to have a localized fund raising tea in Florida, for fear that American Hadassah might feel that we were infringing on their activities. ” Small concluded that Hadassah’s decision might very well aggravate the budgetary problems of many Jewish organizations. CANADIAN HadassahWIZO is headquartered in Montreal. Since 1953 it has maintained an elaborate program of medical services at Assaf Harofe Hospital outside of Tel Aviv. New projects include the financing of oncology and cardiology research, and the building of an adjacent complex to house medical equipment.

TEL AIV — Israel investigates every accusation of overcharging of tourists and when a British tourist complained of paying 37,600 shekels

fact, based on principles established and prescribed by the Torah. In a case of intermarriage, the child, having been an integral part of his mother for the nine months of its embryonic state, is naturally endowed with the religious status of its mother. If the mother is Jewish, so is the child: No one has the right to change the status of such a

child without a conscious choice on the child’s part upon reaching maturity.” RABBI JACOBS retorted that the “Biblical/Torah tradition, which does not know of formal acts of conversion, regards the paternal line as decisive” and refered to Numbers 1:2. He said that the maternal tradition is post-Bibli-cal/Talmudic/Rabbinic.
