We Apologize An apology is due for the atrocious error of editor Gabriel Cohen in incorrectly identifying Alex Lande in the photograph on page one of last week’s issue. Mr. Vogel was in Washington to participate in the memorable Holocaust Memorial along with others from Indianapolis. So it was Mr. Lande who was shown greeting Pauline Lax whom he last saw 40 years ago in Transylvania.
Clergy In Evansville Told About Holocaust
EVANSVILLE — Approximately 60 Christian clergy from the Evansville area, together with a sprinkling of social studies teachers, gathered to hear Holocaust survivor Mike Vogel tall of his experiences. Prof. Irving Katz, of IU Bloomington, presented a lecture of the historic roots of anti-Semitism in Germany and his view of how the Holocaust could happen in a “civilized” country. These presentations were followed by “Lunch and Dialogue,” during which both men answered a variety of questions about contemporary intolerance, the prosecution of Nazi war criminals, and lessons of the Holocaust. Three simultaneous workshops followed, in which the clergy discussed when and how they deal with teaching about Jews, Holocaust and intolerance in the course of their ministry. Dr. Marcia Goldstone discussed possible resources for use in schools and churches. The afternoon concluded with a brief worship service on the theme of peace. Ed brings home flowers for the table, the meal moves to the dining room and the good china and silver comes out. The meal is relaxed and everyone knows it’s special. Homemade challah adorns the table. This challah is made in batches of three anytime Phyllis has a spare moment and is slasher away in the freezer. This meal is also special because it's the only night of the week that Phyllis serves dessert. While meals during the week may be simple, Friday dinner is attended to with great detail and is loved by all. Having cooked kosher for so many years allowed Phyllis to make an easy transition to vegetarianism a year or so ago. Although she realized that she never really cared for meat or chicken, she was always carried along by the pattern of those around her. As she read more about being a vegetarian, she realized that it afforded her an even better opportunity to maintain her kosherness when away from home. Travel to New York city with i s abundance ct restaurants specializing in vegetarian cooking confirmed her direction. But with five children and a son and daughter in law who still eat meat, she finds herself often cooking for them and providing herself with a protein substitute in the form of soy loaves. Always a busy lady, Phyllis is no less busy now that her children are no longer living at home. Forever committed to volunteerism, she began her present career as assistant to the Executive Director of the Downtown Promotion Council after (Continued On Page IN 17) ^tegional neierraiS...
