older and one younger than Ronaldo. The boys have had Hebrew educations and, surprisingly enough, attend public schools, not private establishments. ON A LATER occasion, when my wife and I visited the Sterns at their apartment, I asked Mrs. Stern, a gracious and charming hostess, what she had planned for Ronaldo's Bar Mitzvah. She smiled and replied: “Not very much, really. After services we’ll all go downstairs for a bit of wine and cakes. And that evening we’ll have a family dinner for 30 or so. We don’t make such a big social thing of it. It’s a normal event in our lives and we keep it that way.” I asked Stern a question I prefaced with the remark that it might be embarrassing “Don’t answer it if you don't want to,” I said. “Carry on,” was his reply. “Would you be willing.” I asked, “to tell me how much you contributed to Israel and Israel bonds?” “I won’t tell you the amount,” he answered. “But I will tell you that both my wife and I are active in that area and we both go to bond rallies. Bo-ruch a-toh Ado-noy Elo-hey-nu me-lech ha-olom sher-oso nisim la-avo-sey-nu ba-yo-mim ho-heym ba-z'man ha-zeh. “Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who performed miracles for our Fathers in the days of old at this season.” The following Blessing is said on the first evening only: — Bo-ruch a-toh Ado-noy Elo-hey-nu me-lech ha-olom she-he-chi-yo-nu ve-ki-mo-nu ve-hi-gi-o-nu laz-man ha-zeh. “Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has kept us in life, and has preserved us and enabled us to reach this season.” After reciting the blessing, the father kindles the first candle, mother the second, and so on. As an alternative, some families provide each child with a menorah and candles and they are then lit together with the family menorah. The family proceeds to sing the traditional Chanukah melodies.
