hands when they are troubled, to officiate at their weddings, bar mitzvahs and funerals and come and see them when they are in the hospital. The Reform rabbi said this explains why so many rabbis as well as ministers and priests talk of leaving the pulpit. He prefaced his remarks by recalling the resignation some time ago by Rabbi Martin Perley of Temple B’rith Sholom, Louisville, Ky. He said Dr. Perley quit his congregation to become executive of the Louisville Human Relations Committee and recently reported he got a lot more satisfaction improving relations between the black and white communities, fighting for equal opportunities for the Negroes of Louisville and educating his community on human rights than he did out of his service in the pulpit. member Rabbi Perley as frequently acting chaplain at Ft. Knox, Ky., when they were stationed there. He often neglected hfs own congregation on Friday nights to travel 18 miles to the Jewish army chapel and cheer up the Jewish soldiers at the fort and read them the Conservative service prescribed by the Chaplain’s Corps. Orthodox and Conservative rabbis refused to travel on the sabbath and the other Reform rabbi in Louisville, the late Joseph Reich was too advanced in years to make the trip often.

Obituary Shmuel Lapin NEW YORK - Death at 43 came to Shmuel Lapin, executive secretary of YIVO, Institute for Jewish Research, after a long illness. He had been executive director of the Canadian Labor Zionist Movement and later directed the youth department of the Farband Labor Zionist Order.

By MAURICE SCHAPIRO CINCINNATI (P-O) - Cincinnati has a slowly growing Hebrew-Christian congregation of about 70 members who call themselves Messianic Jews to emphasize their Jewishness and their kinship to other Jews, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The story was written by Ben L. Kaufman, religion editor of the Enquirer, who left Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion to become a reporter. The congregation is led by Rev. Martin Chernoff, formerly of Toronto, Canada, member of an Orthodox family who met Hebrew Christians for the first time at a summer camp as a child. He says he came to know Jesus as his Messiah after serving in the Canadian Army. There are whites and blacks in the congregation and some Christians who claim they have become spiritual Jews through circumcision of the heart. A University of Cincinnati rabbi called the Messianic Jews a tiny movement and absurd. An Episcopal priest who knows them says they are ignorant of both Judaism and Christianity. Nevertheless they meet Sundays at the Standard Building & Loan community room in Pleasant Ridge and have prayer meeting on Tuesday nights. Their members include Elliott

Klayman, 27, reared Orthodox, who followed the fads of his youth while winning law degrees at University of Cincinnati and Harvard; Marjorie Friedman, 28, guidance counselor for teen age girls, who says her parents had no spiritual values; Rick Cogill, 25, former Episcopalian, whom a rector helped cure drug habits; Geila Brown, 22, second generation Hebrew-Christian, who has used the Jewish Community Center and been active in Israel programs; Mrs. Chernoff, former Methodist in Knoxville and her son, David, 21. Layman led a recent service because Rev. Chernoff, 52, was in the hospital. They start with singing songs, many with Hebrew lyrics. Klayman gave a sin and Scripture sermon punctured by many amens and uplifted hands remindful of a fundamentalist church service. The Hebrew-Christian Alliance led the Chernoffs to Cincinnati 19 years ago when a small group of believers needed a pastor. They spent six years working to get the congregation organized. Chernoff was educated at a Bible school and Baptist seminary in Canada and ordained by an independent Baptist Church in Canada and by Southern Baptists in this country.
