The Jewish community can reach this group, Bikel maintains, by showing that there are Jewish institutions capable of an activist response to current social problems. Bikel urges students not to submerge themselves so completely into the American mainstream that they cast off their heritage. “Ethnic groups in America were not meant to disappear,” he says. “America was built on the premise of equality, but the word ‘equal’ is not synonymous with the phrase ‘the same.’ America offers equal rights, privileges, accessibility and opportunities. But it is not a leveling-off process meant to eradicate ethnic and cultural differences.” Bikel’s volunteer campus appearances — he won’t charge afee — are jointly sponsored by the Hillel Foundations and the American Jewish Congress. Bikel is a national vice-presi-dent of the Congress.
