Your Name By NORBERT PEARLROTII Dear Mr. Pearlroth: I would like to know the origin and meaning of my mother’s name. My mother’s maiden name was GAJEWSKI. She came from Grodno, Poland. I would appreciate any information on this name. Thank you. Sincerely — Mrs. S. Tyminski, New Jersey. Gajewski is a surname of geographical origin.. Its most likely source is the village of Gajewo in the district of Ludza in Latvia which was formerly part of Poland. There are many villages named either Gajow or Gajewo in Poland and Lithuania, but the Latvian Gajewo is the most probable place of your family’s origin. The geographiPearlroth cal name is derived from Gaj, a sacred oak forest which was a sancutary in pagan days. Dear Mr. Pearlroth: I would greatly appreciate it if you would kindly give me information about the origin of the name “RIGROD.” The person, who is a distant relative, originally came from Warsaw, Poland. Thank you. — S.A. Hirschhorn, M.C., Brooklyn. Rigrod — more correctly Rajgrod — is the name of a town in the district of Szczuczyn, in Poland located on the border between Poland and Prussia. The population was predominantly Jewish and there is no doubt that the family originated there. It is located on a lake of the same name which enjoyed great fame as an abundant source of eels which were exported to all parts of the country. The meaning of Rajgrod is “Paradise Town.” (Do you want to know what your name means? Send all queries to Mr. Pearlroth, National Jewish Post & Opinion, 70 Fifth Avenue, New York, N. Y. 10011)
Nazism Far From Dead The Digest Of The Yiddish Press
Rabbis Delinquent Charge Is Refuted
Nasser represents a cross between Hitlerism and Communism. Whilst taking orders from Moscow, he still harbors former Nazi scientists who are doing atomic research for him. The existence of a grim network of Nazi sympathizers is highlighted in a book recently published
in London.
Written by a German-Jewish journalist, Dennis Eisenberg, the book, “The Revival of Fascism,” details the activities of the NaziFascist International, winch held a convention in Venice, in 1962, and has never ceased drumming up trade for Hitler-like ideas. One of the heroes fo the group is Nasser, upon whom these scoundrels (scattered everywhere, Argentina, England, Germany, various Arab countries) look as their idol. In the DayJournal, S.I. Dorfson says that the book is a disheartening collection of grotesque. facts proving that Nazism is for from dead.

By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER The national convention of Young Israel got a slight scolding from Rabbi S. Cahana, director of religious affairs for the State of I s r a e 1. Speaking to a jammed audience keyed to great h e i g h t s of emotion during the MidSilver east crisis, Rabbi Cahana gave thanks for the aid given to Israel by American Jewry, but he wondered why the leading rabbis of the U.S. didn’t rush to Israel when the Wailing Wall was liberated. That’s what Chief Rabbis Jakobovits, of England and Kaplan of France did, he told them. There were other fissures in ♦he unity engendered by Israel’s travail. One of the speakers at the convention, held in Bradley Beach, N.J., Rabbi Zebulun Charlop, said he could not understand why this country’s leading Orthodox rabbis do not point out that what is going on in Israel constitutes the first stages of the messianic era. Instead, they tend to downgrade Israel's achievements from a religious point of view. In the eyes of Charlop, Ben Curion, even though he is a secularist, is an “instrument of the redemption." Back came Rabbi Morris Chiat to slap Charlop down. If you have a grievance against any of the great rabbis, talk to them about it; don’t deprecate these revered men in a public address, advised Chiat. At another session, the famed scholarly layman, Irving Bunin, chided Charlop for his audacity. At still another meeting during the conclave, Rabbi Shraga Schoenfeld invited displeasure from some Young Israelites by defending the practice of those Orthodox rabbis who work with Reform and Conservative colleagues in the Synagogue Council. He declared that Orthodoxy should not isolate itself from the rest of Jewry. The Young Israel president, Nat Saperstein, brought the house down when he cried out

that Young Israel was not neutral in the Mideast crisis, “in word, thought or deed,” a reference to the attitude of the State Dept, when Israel was ostensibly about to be asphyxiated by the Arabs (a statement which prompted an anonymous wealthy Jewish Democrat to say to a party worker who asked for money: “Tell Mr. Johnson I’m neutral in word, thought and deed.”). Mr. Saperstein brought joy to the conventioneers by reporting that more and more kosher dining halls are available on American college campuses; the students not only eat there but discuss their faith. (N. Gordon, the Day-Journal)
Wailing Wall Reunion The agony and ecstasy of the recent war have poignantized the emotions of the people. Greatest of the forces for heightened feelings was the reunion of the people with Old Jerusalem and the Wall. Hardly had the Wall been embraced by Israeli’s hands than poets and writers saluted the occasion. One such poem by Naomi Sliamar is called “Golden Jerusalem" and was promptly translated into Yiddish by Meier Schticker and Benjamin Ressler for the DayJournal. Gist of the poem: The air of Jerusalem is redolent with the aroma of a vineyard and the sounds of victory bells. The city lived in solitude (a reference to the opening lines of the Book of Lamentations), and also in the hearts of men. O Jerusalem of gold, of copper and of light, I am a fiddle for your plaintive melody. How sad that no pilgrims came to you from the Dead Sea or Jericho. But now pilgrims are arriving to weave a crown for you. I, the youngest of your children, sing a song to you. Your name burns like a hot coal and is as warm as a kingly kiss. If I forget you, Jerusalem, O Golden One. . .0 Jerusalem of gold, copper and light, let me be a fiddle for your song! Says the Day-Journal: the song is No. 1 on the Israeli hit parade these days.
