Sol Goldsmith Dies; Owned Drug Store Chain

Heller, Valinetz Bar Mitzvahs Set

Sol Goldsmith, 82 years old, founder and owner with two brothers of one of the first drugstore chains in Indiana, died Saturday in his home, 6027 Gladden Drive. Mr. Goldsmith, a lifelong Indianapolis resident, was a 1902 graduate of the Purdue University School of Pharmacy and played on one of the Purdue's first football teams. With his late brothers, Louis and Julius Goldsmith, he founded the Goldsmith Brothers Drugstores. The 15 stores in the Indianapolis area were sold in 1929 to Walgreen after 30 years of operation. The trio also founded the Goldsmith Brothers Realty Company which was operated for 30 years. At one time they also were in the wholesale tobacco business. Mr. Goldsmith retired 10 years ago. He had served on the board of directors of the Broadmoor Country Club, Kirschbaum Cen-

ter, Jewish Welfare Federation and Jewish Credit Union. One of the oldest members of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, he was on its board for 15 years. He was a charter member of the Broadmoor Country Club, a member of B’nai B’rith and the Monument Masonic Lodge. Mr. Goldsmith was honored in 1959 for 50 years in pharmacy by the Indiana Pharmaceutical Association. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Indianapolis Hebrew Temple. Burial will be in Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery South. Friends may call at the Goldsmith home. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Irene Goldsmith; two daughters, Mrs. Samuel Nathan of Highland Park, 111., and M!rs. Morton Wolman of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Helen Tick of Paducah, Ky„ and four grandchildren.

Sociology Prof. To Speak At Open Forum The speaker for the next Jewish Community Center Association Open Forum will be Dr. Morris Janowitz, Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago, on Sunday April 24. He will discuss “Education in the Inner City.” The meeting, co-sponsored by the University of Chicago Club of Indianapolis, will be held at the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, 6501 N. Meridian St. at 8:00 p.m. Dr. Janowitz received his A.B. degree in 1941 from Washington Square College of New York University, and his Ph.D. in 1948 from the University of Chi-

cago.

He returned to the University of Chicago in 1961 as a Ford Foundation Visiting Professor in the Graduate School of Business. In 1962, he was appointed Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Social Organization Studies at the University. Janowitz has been a Fulbright Research Professor at the University of Frankfurt and a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, California. He has specialized in urban problems, inter-group relations and social change, and is the author of several books, including “The Professional Soldier” and “The Dynamics of Prejudice” (with Bruno Bettelheim). Tickets for the Open Forum will be available at the door. A buffet dinner for University of Chicago alumni will precede the meeting. The new board will be the guests of the executive board at luncheon.

City Of Hope Donor Dinner, Show Readied The seventh annual donor dinner dance and show of the Indianapolis Chapter of City of Hope will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation. This affair climaxes the major fund raising project of the year, the donor and book. The invocation will be given by Mrs. Julius Witoff. The feature highlight of the evening will be the vaudeville revue featuring the members of the City Of Hope accompanied by Charles Holden. Mrs. Jack Ladin, Mrs. Ben Bornstein, and Mrs. Irving Leibowitz are the choreographers and directors. Music for the show and dancing will be provided by George Nickoloff and his orchestra. Louis M. Efroymson Dies; Retired City Businessman

Funeral sendees for Louis M. Efroymson, 91 years old, a retired Indianapolis businessman, were held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Aaron - Reuben . Nelson Funeral Home. Burial was in Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery South. Mr. Efroymson, who operated a men’s clothing store more than 50 years before retiring 13 years ago, died Friday at his home, 1408 North Pennsylvania Street. Mr. Efroymson was a member of the Indianapolis Hebrew and S h a r a Tefilla congregations, B’nai B’rith and the Monument Masonic Lodge. Sisterhood Board Meeting Scheduled An open board meeting of the B’nai Torah Sisterhood will be held on Monday evening, April 25 at 8:30 p.m. in the vestry of the B’nai Torah. Mrs. Jack Zeckel, nominating chairman, will present the slate of officers for 1966-67 and there will be an election. Plans for the rummage sale to be held in May under the chairmanship of Mrs. Irving Epstein will be made.
