Brotherhood, Catholics To Exchange Services
For the first time in the United States the brotherhood of a Jewish congregation and the men of a Catholic Diocese will meet together in each other’s houses of worship for a tour and a discission Of each others faith. The groups concerned are the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation Temple Brotherhood and the members of Indianapolis District Council of Catholic Men. THIS WAS announced jointly by Louis D. Young, president of the IHC Brotherhood, and Raymond R. Albers, president of Council Of Catholic Men. “This project is one for better understanding between Catholics and Jews. As a result of this series of interfaith meetings, each group will have a better understanding of the other’s religion,** the leaders said. The first meeting at which the IHC Brotherhood will play host to the Catholics will be held at the temple at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 16.
THE PROGRAM includes an assembly, a guided tour of the temple facilities, an open forum discussion on Judaism followed by a social hour. Tour leaders will include Rabbi Maurice Davis, Rabbi Allan Weitzman, Dr. Clarence Efroymson and Dr. David Silver, Lewis Lurie, president of the congregation, and Alvin Cohen, past president. At the second meeting on Tuesday, June 4 the Catholic men will be hosts to the Jewish guests at the Latin School and Holy Rosary Church, 520 Stevens. ASSISTING in the arrangements for the Catholic men are Edwin Kurek, chairman of family welfare; William Rohr, chairman of public relations; William Newbold, chairman of organizations and development; and Joseph Sackenheim, secretary. Assisting the brotherhood are Robert Fischer, and Sydnor Shatz.
Myro Glass Honored By Cantor's Assembly
Hie Kavod Award — one of the highest honors of the Cantors Assembly of America — has been presented to Cantor Myro Glass “in recognition of a life time devoted to the sacred calling of Hazzanut in which he brought dignity, aistinction and stature to this ministry.” The presentation was made at Grossingers last week by Cantor Samuel Rosenbaum, executive vice-president of the Cantors Assembly at the organization’s annual convention. CANTOR GLASS who is Cantor Emeritus of Congregation BethE1 Zedeck, was also cited for “his heroic efforts in behalf of the music of the Jewish people in Eretz Yisrael.” Besides his contribution to the Jewish music Cantor Glass is also well-known for his many other Oommunily activities. Cantor Glass recently returned here after a three-month visit to Israel where he toured Jewhh National Fund projects. He has been active in JNF work for more than 25 years. In recognition of his help a grove of 1,000 trees has been created in his honor. Born in Zalcszczyka, Galicia, Cantor Glass studied music in Vienna. He went to Palestine in 1919 and was a pioneer in Petak Tikvah, one of the earliest colonies. HE CAME to America in 1924.
CANTOR GLASS Gets Coveted Award In 1928 he was appointed Cantor of Beth-El Zedeck and was given a life time contract in 1949 after 20 years of service. Glass has been active in the American Jewish Congress, Jewish Welfare Federation, the local Zionist organization, Cantors Assembly of America and the BethEl Men’s Club among others. The POST named him Indiana’s Man of the Year in 1952. He has also composed several liturgical songs, among them “Z’chor Yisrael”, which is dedicated to the memory of the millions of Jewish martyrs of his generation.
Man, Woman Of The Year Award Winners Are Named
Radio executive Eldon Campbell and Mrs. Amelia Cook, two outstanding community and civic leaders, have been named 1963 recipients oi the Man and Woman of the Year awards by the Isadore Feibleman Memorial Fund of Indianapolis Lodge 58 of B’nai B'rith. The announcement of the selections was made by Dr. Kenneth Ossip, president of the lodge, and by Alvin Cohen, chairman of the selection committee, PRESENTATION of the awards will be made at a dinner at 7 p.m., Monday, May 20 in the auditorium of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation. Campbell, who is vice-president and general manager of the WFBM stations, was cited for "constant dedication in translating democratic ideals into a way of life for all Americans” in our time. Qongregation Beth-El Zedeck, its Men’s Club and Sisterhood have announced plans for the presentation of their sixth annual Music Festival at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, in the temple sanctuary. Cantor Robert Zalkin will be joined by five cantors from the Chicago area and the Beth-El Choir and Junior Choir in the Center Scouts Win Prize At Annual Fair Jewish Community Center Boy Scout Troop 447 won a first place blue ribbon award recently at the Boy Scout Fair held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Their display was entitled “Ner Talmud — The Eternal Light.” BOYS REPRESENTING all congregations manned the booths. Participating in the Scout Fair were Jack Simon, explorer scout, Danny Kay, visiting scout from Troop 18, Steve Grosby, Joel Epstein, David Linder, Larry Baker, Seth Bernstein, Alex Csillig, Howard Calderon, Steve Fishman and Joe and Nate Kempler. Rabbi Nandor Fruchter, Rabbi Weitsman and Mrs. Harry Traugott assisted the scouts in preparing their exhibit. Ed Fershtman is scoutmaster of the troop and Sam Epstein is assistant scoutmaster.

EACH OF THE cantors holds a leading pulpit, is a noted soloist, and has many appearances on radio and television listed among their many major cantorial and musical achievements. Cantor Harold Brindell, West Suburban Temple, River Forest, Illinois, has been featured as soloist with the Chicago Symphony and many other orchestras. Cantor Robert Handwerger of Emanuel Congregation, Chicago, has been featured soloist at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, Grant Park and with the Auditorium Opera Company. A cantor who represents the fourth generation of cantors in his family is Cantor Jordan Cohen of North Suburban Synagogue Beth-El of Highland Park, Illinois. FOLLOWING the concert, the audience will have the opportunity to meet the distinguished soloists at a reception and social hour in the Temple auditorium. The community is invited to attend this outstanding Music Festival presentation. The music festival is included in the BethEl Men’s Club and Sisterhood sponsored Forum Series; however individual tickets will be available at the door on the night of the concert at $1.50 per person. His stations have made time available to the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce for the presentation of the “Voice of Freedom” series. HE ALSO HAS created a special projects unit at WFBM designed to develop programs of interest to the community in the areas of mental health, civil defense, juvenile delinquency and other matters oi community concern. His news staff has constantly been supported in its efforts to report the news fairly in the best reporting tradition. Campbell is also active on the Boy Scout Council, the Girl Scouts and a variety of community activities. He has also served as president of Junior Achievement. Mrs. Cook president of the Indianapolis Parent Teacher Association Council was cited for the ‘translation of democratic ideals into programs of action of benefit to the total community.” THE WIFE OF David M. Cook, an Indianapolis attorney, she is a member of the Governor’s Commission on Aging, and a participant in the Indiana University “Government in Action” leadership seminar series. She is the immediate past president of the Indianapolis section of the National Council of Jewish Women. Active for several years in Jewish Welfare Federation fund raising campaigns. Mrs. Cook is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Education. She is a member of many organizations, including B’nai B’rith, the League of Women Voters, Hadassah, Council for World Affairs, and the Indiana University Aiumni Association. The Cooks have four children. Previous winners are: Dr. Clarence Efroymson and Mrs. Frank E. McKinney; Richard D. Peters and Mrs. Harold Buell; Joel Hadley and Mrs. Charles Efroymson; William Book and Mrs . John Burkhart; Harry Pritchard and Mrs. Harold B. West; Eugene C. Pulliam and Mrs. Jack A. Goodman.
