Libyans Pressure Jews to Emigrate TRIPOLI, Libya—Jews in this former Italian colony are gradually being pressured into emigration by discriminatory laws and treatment. In spite of reduced profits in recent months Jewish businessmen in Tripoli are being taxed more heavily than even before, according to the Jewish Chronicle of London. They have to pay higher taxes than the rest of the population, another indication that Libyan authorities plan to increase the discrimination against Jews in the country in order to compel them to emigrate. Some middle class Jews have already decided to emigrate to Israel; others prefer Italy. The latter, however, are handicapped in that Italy does not recognize as Italian nationals Tripoli-born Jews who lived there during the fascist regime. Another difficulty is the inability to obtain Libyan passports to which Jews are entitled under Libyan laws. Temporary travel documents are issued to Jews only after exhaustive information has proposed journey.

ISRAELIS VISIT RUSSIA TEL AVIV (WNS)—A delegation of seven women, among them six members of the Communist party in Israel and the poetess Leah Goldberg have left this week for Sofia, Bulgaria, on a tour that will bring them to Moscow for a three-week tour of the Soviet Union.
