Rabbis Urge Membership in Zionist District RABBI MICHEL B. ALBAGLI In these most trying times for our people, when millions of our brethren in Eiirope were silenced forever, and others are hound to have the same tragic fate for a lack of a haven of refuge, and for the great need of an early realization of our old —new dream of establishing a Jewish National Home in Palestine, where our Jewish life may be fully developed and lived, it is one of our sacred obligations to join NOW the ranks of . the Z. O. A. * * * RABBI ISRAEL CHODOS He who joins the Zionist Organization of America identifies himself with the destiny of his people. He helps to solve the homelessness of his peopie which lies at the root of the Jewish problem in the world. He joins the ranks of those Jews in America who see in Zionism .a forceful, idealistic instrument to stem the tide of disintegration from within and annihilation from without. He helps, through Zionism, to normalize Jewish living throughout the world By swelling the numerical strength of Zionism, every Jew in Indianapolis v ho joins the Zionist Organization of America helps intensify the influence of Zionism on the conscience of the world and thus helps the liberation of his people. • • * RABBI SAMUEL FOX Judaism is incomplete without Zionism. No Jew can claim to be a full-fledged member of the Jewish people unless he is a Zionist. No Jew can claim himself as a true American unless he either gives up Judaism or fosters Zionism. Our country is only for wholesome believers. Our religion has room only for faithful followers. As the writing of- the poet has no basis if not for the tabloid upon which he writes—so too our thoughts and prayers are without substance without the only sanctioned material possession we believe in. If we will that our lives, our hopes and our prayers be meaningful and not void, we are Zionists. If we insist that our Judaism be a tribute to the American ideals of honesty, integrity and liberty, we are Zionists. * ♦ * «■» RABBI NANDOR FRUCHTER We Jews in America live in a land of freedom and of security. We forget so easily, that the remnants of our people wander homeless and futureless from continent to continent. We have to build for those unfortunates a refuge, a land and a home where they can live respected and secure, not supported by pity and charity of other nations. For them and for us, Palestine is our homeland. We cannot separate living Judaism and Torah observance from Zion and Jerusalem. Therefore, I urge all my members and many friends to become active members and supporters of the Zionist Movement in America. • * * RABBI SAMUEL A. KATZ The Jew that has been living in Galuth for almost 2000 years has always lived, hoping to return to his native land. It. is only by this hope that he has been able to exist throughout the years. In ail times have we prayed for the restoration of our land and lamented the great catastrophe that happened 2000 years ago. Napoleon Bonaparte, when entering Russia saw in a village Jews sitting on the ground, weeping. Upon asking the reason for this sorrow, he was answered that the day was the 9th of Ab—the day when the Romans had burned the Temple and banished the Jews from Palestine. Impressed, Napoleon declared that a people that could express grief over the destruction after 1700 years would never pass away from the world. Now, when the great day of the peace table is approaching where the nations will have the opportunity to present their just demands and the representatives of the Jewish people will claim the land that is due them, we must be ready, we must be organized. Our representatives must represent a united people—not one divided into various factions. I appeal to all Jews —Orthodox, Conservative, Reform—to organize under the Zionist organizations so that we will have strength. The one who does not join is a traitor to Jewish existence. I hope you will all realize the urgency of this plea and cooperate to the fullest extent. * * * RABBI DAVID S. SHAPIRO In these trying days, when the fate of nations is hanging in the balance, it is the duty of every Jew to take stock of the status of our people. There is but one bright bright spot upon the Jewish horizon—and that is Palestine. In Palestine more Jews have in the past ten years found refuge than in all the countries of the world together. The contributions of Palestinian Jewry to the war effort of the Allies in terms of manpower, wealth and industry, are inestimable. A high type of religious civilization is in the process of construction in that country—a civilization which will inspire the world and will make us and our children proud of our Judaism. Can any loyal Jew, particularly a member of a synagogue, who by his affiliation with a religious institution manifests his interests in the future of his people, fail to rally behind the standard of Zionism which is bringing to fruit on the millenia-old dreams and aspirations of our people? There can be but one answer. That answer is joining up with either the Zionist Organization or the Mizrachi.
