2 Children Saved By Gifts Of Indiana Children, Mrs. Goodman Reveals

Confirmation And Graduation Sums Mount To $750 Mrs J. A. Goodman, member ot the national board of Hadassah, and head of the local Youth Aliyah committee of the Indianapolis Hadassah, this week thanked the youth of Indianapolis and Indiana through the Jewish Post for saving the lives of two Jewish children who were brought to Palestine by funds given in the name of confirmands, graduates, and birthdays of Indiana Jewish children. 'T have been instructed to transmit to all of you the heart-felt thanks of two young people whose lives will forever be yours”, Mrs. Goodman wrote in a Thanksgiving message. Revealing that the fund had grown through small gifts to $750, Mrs. Goodman said that gifts are still coming in. The campaign was announced this summer in The Jewish Post when the first emergency fund to enable 1,000 children to be transferred to Palestine was launched. Many contributions began to pour in from all parts of the nation, one $10 gift coming in from a Jewish Post subscriber in New York City, and another $25 check from Danville, 111. Under the plan friends and relatives of children graduating, being confirmed, having birthdays, or celebrating Chanukah, would send contributions to this paper or to Mrs. J. A. Goodman, Kessler Blvd., Indianapolis, Ind. Mrs. Goodman in turn would mail a dignified card to the child saying that such and such an amount of money had been given to Youth Aliyah by such and such a person in behalf of the certain child. The plan caught on immediately and was copied in many other cities. All gifts came in unsolicited. The Jewish Post will continue to turn over to Mrs. Goodman all gifts received. To the Young People of Indiana: On this our Thanksgiving weekend I have been instructed to transmit to all of you the heart-felt thanks of two young people whose lives will forever be yours. They are the youths whose lives were saved by the graduation, confirmation, birthday and other gifts which were made in your names last summer. I wish I could report in detail how they are spending their Thanksgiving week-end, but I can tell you only that they are now out of Austria and in Palestine and that they have escaped the fates that were the lot of the thousands of others still there. It may not have seemed possible to you that the small amounts given could have grown to such a large total, but they amounted to over seven hundred fifty dollars, enough to save two children. Gifts Are Still Coming In Almost one thousand young people in all were granted visas and escaped Austria, Germany, Roumania and Poland before the first of October—but it will never be forgottert that two of this number were saved by the young people of Indiana. In this you have worked and given side by side with Eddie Cantor and many other distinguished people. MRS. JACK A. GOODMAN.

The meeting, called as a protest against recent Nazi outrages, will be sponsored by all liberal and progressive groups in the city. The meeting will also consider ways of preventing the rise of Fascism in the United States. Rabbi Gharry will speak on "Democracy In Danger.” . Station Regrets Coughlin Talk By Jewish Telegraphic Agency NEW YORK.—Protests mounted against the broadcast address of Father Charles E. Coughlin from Royal Oak, Mich., in which, while protesting persecution, he said it had followed the spread of beliefs that the Jews were the leaders of Communism and that Jews had risen to influence radio, journalism and finance. Station WMCA, local outlet for the speech, immediately afterward broadcast a statement that he had “uttered certain mistakes of fact.” The American Jewish Federation to Combat Communism and Fascism telegraphed Father Coughlin demanding that he retract the implication that Jews led Communism, which, the telegram said, could have no other effect than promoting and fostering interracial strife.”

O’Connell Flays Nazis By Jewish Telegraphic Agency BOSTON.—In contrast to Father Coughlin, Cardinal O’Connell, addressing 400 college students at Boston’s Cathedral of the Holy Cross, declared that Germany was under the heel "of a little group who are striving to cast out not only the Jews, but God himself and termed this “insanity.”
